How to Get Notified When Someone Comments on a Post
Turn on comment alerts in LinkedIn, Reddit, WordPress.com, Facebook, or Instagram. Learn what each setting covers and what to check when alerts stop.
To get notified when someone comments on your post, open that platform’s notification settings, enable its comment-related notification, and choose an available delivery method such as in-app, push, email, or SMS. The exact steps and which comments count vary by service. If you manage a WordPress.com site, you can enable email alerts for new comments in its Discussion settings.
These are separate settings: enabling a notification category in an app does not necessarily grant permission for push alerts on your device, and allowing push alerts on your device does not turn on a category that is disabled in the app. Check both the platform setting and the delivery method you want.
Choose the platform and enable comment alerts
- Open Settings & Privacy, then Notifications.
- Open the relevant notification category and find Comments and reactions under Posting and commenting.
- Enable the notification options and delivery methods you want.
- For push alerts, make sure LinkedIn in-app notifications are enabled as well as push notifications on your device.
LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance says that if comment alerts are missing, reset Comments and reactions and the related delivery settings. LinkedIn says notifications should start appearing within 48–72 hours after following that reset process. That is LinkedIn’s guidance for this issue, not a general delivery guarantee.

- On reddit.com, open Settings and then Notifications. In the app, open the account’s notification controls.
- Find the comment notification type you want and turn it on.
- Check whether the alert should arrive in the app, as a push notification, or through another offered channel.
Know what triggers an alert: Reddit says comment notifications for your post cover a comment directly on the post, also called a parent comment. It says you will not be notified when someone replies to another person’s comment. If you expect alerts for every reply in the discussion, this distinction may explain the gap.

WordPress.com site owners
This setting is for someone who manages a WordPress.com site, not for a visitor following someone else’s social media post.
- Open your site dashboard and go to Settings → Discussion.
- Under Email me whenever, enable Anyone posts a comment.
- If you also want an email when a comment is held for moderation, enable that option separately.
WordPress.com sends these alerts to the account email address. See WordPress.com Support: Get notified of new comments.
Facebook’s Help Centre describes choosing SMS for comments on status updates and posts through Profile → Settings & privacy → Settings → Notifications. Expand the relevant notification category and select SMS if that option is available.
Menu names can change, and SMS availability may depend on your account or region. Check the current notification options shown in your account rather than assuming SMS is available everywhere. See the Facebook Help Centre.
Instagram’s notification settings include alerts about interactions with your content, including comments. Look under Settings → Notifications → Push notifications for the relevant interaction controls. App labels and available choices can vary by account, device, or locale, so follow the labels currently shown in your app. See Instagram Help Centre.
Check both the alert and its delivery channel
When a service offers separate controls, verify both parts:
- Event category: Are comments or the relevant kind of comment enabled?
- Delivery method: Is the alert set to in-app, push, email, or SMS, as desired?
- Receiving account or device: Is the selected email address current, or is the app signed in on the device where you expect a push alert?
- Event scope: Does the service notify you about this kind of comment? For example, Reddit distinguishes direct comments on a post from replies to another commenter.
Platform controls establish which alerts you have requested; they do not guarantee that every service will deliver every alert instantly. Avoid assuming the same setting or delivery promise applies across platforms.
Troubleshoot missing comment notifications
| What you see | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No alert on your phone | The comment category is off, or the platform’s push or in-app delivery setting is off. | Enable the comment notification in the service, then check its in-app and push options. |
| The app shows alerts, but the phone does not | The service may be allowed to notify in-app while push delivery is not enabled on the device, or vice versa. | Check both the platform’s delivery controls and your device’s notification permission for that app. |
| You get alerts for some comments but not others | The service may only notify for a particular event type or thread relationship. | Check the platform’s definition. On Reddit, a direct comment on your post can trigger an alert; a reply to another person’s comment does not, according to Reddit Help. |
| You do not receive WordPress.com email alerts | The new-comment email option may be off, or you may be checking an address other than the account email. | Revisit Settings → Discussion, confirm the email option and account email, and check your mail’s spam or junk folder. |
| LinkedIn alerts remain missing | Related notification or delivery settings may need to be reset. | Use LinkedIn’s reset guidance for Comments and reactions and associated delivery options. LinkedIn says to allow 48–72 hours after the reset process for notifications to start appearing. |
| A menu or option is missing | The interface or available delivery options can vary by device, locale, account, or service updates. | Open the service’s current help page and check its latest in-app settings. Facebook SMS and Instagram menu instructions may be subject to change. |
For platform-specific problems, use the service’s current official help instructions. The steps above describe notification controls; they cannot diagnose every device-level, account-level, or delivery issue.

If you are building a workflow that needs a visual record of a post or comment thread, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media; it does not configure social-platform notifications.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers say which page verdict applied and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get an email every time someone comments?
It depends on the service. WordPress.com site owners can enable an email for anyone posting a comment. Other services may offer in-app, push, SMS, or account-specific choices instead.
Will enabling push notifications turn on comment alerts?
Not by itself in every service. Enable the comment-related category in the platform and make sure the desired delivery method is enabled.
Why did I not get an alert for a reply in the thread?
Notification scope differs by platform. Reddit Help says its post-comment alerts cover direct comments on the post, not replies to someone else’s comment.
Are the menu names the same on every device?
No. App versions, account options, devices, and locales can change the labels or choices you see. Use the service’s current help page if a menu differs from these directions.
