How to Capture Google Results Screenshots Without Personalized Search

Turn off Google’s personalized recommendations, check the results page, and capture a screenshot with enough context to make comparisons meaningful.

To capture Google results with less account-based personalization, turn off Personalized Recommendations in Search services while signed in, or turn off Search customization while signed out. Search the exact query, check the results page for a “Results are not personalized” note or use “Try without,” then capture the visible page with your operating system’s screenshot tool.

This does not create a universal or context-free results page. Google can still use current location, language, device type, recent searches, and saved information, so describe the capture as less account-personalized or shown without personalized recommendations—not as the one neutral Google result set.

1. Turn off account personalization before searching

For a signed-in Google Account, open google.com/search-personalization. If needed, navigate through Google Account → Data & privacy → Personalization settings, then switch off Personalized Recommendations in Search services. Google’s setting controls personalized recommendations based on account information and activity. It does not pause or delete account history, remove saved items, disable every app preference, or switch off personalization in other Google services. See Google’s settings instructions and Personalization & Google Search results.

Google is rolling out updated Search services settings. If the new control is missing or the labels differ, Google says Search history and recommendations may still be managed through Web & App Activity. Use the setting that appears in your account and record which control you used.

2. If you are signed out, disable Search customization

When signed out, open Google Search settings and turn off Search customization, if that option is shown. This is the signed-out control; the signed-in Personalized Recommendations toggle is a different path. Search settings can vary during Google’s rollout, so if the control is unavailable, proceed with a separate browser session and accurately document that the setting could not be confirmed. Google’s help page explains both signed-in and signed-out controls: Personalization & Google Search results.

3. Search and verify the page state

  1. Enter the precise query you want to document. Avoid changing wording between captures.
  2. Inspect the results page footer for a “Results are personalized” or “Results are not personalized” note.
  3. If available, select Try without to view that query without personalization. This applies to the current search view; it does not save a changed preference.
  4. Keep the query and, when relevant, the footer’s location or personalization note visible in the screenshot.

Google says the personalized and non-personalized versions can sometimes look the same because personalization may have little or no effect on that query. The results can also vary for other reasons, including location, language, device type, recent searches, and which data center responds. Turning personalization off therefore does not establish that two people will see identical results. See Why your Google Search results differ from others.

4. Use Incognito only as an additional session control

Chrome Incognito starts a separate browsing session and does not automatically sign you in to your Google Account. It can help avoid reusing the normal Chrome session on that device, but it does not itself disable all result tailoring or make activity invisible to Google, websites, or a network administrator. Chrome removes local session data when all Incognito windows close; downloads and bookmarks remain. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+Shift+N on Mac. See Chrome’s Incognito documentation.

For a documented comparison, use the explicit Search personalization control when possible. Incognito can supplement that method, but note that it was used and whether you were signed in.

5. Capture the visible results

Windows 10 or 11

  1. Arrange the browser so the query, relevant results, and any state or location note you need are visible.
  2. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  3. Choose a rectangular, window, freeform, or full-screen snip and capture the area. Open the notification to review it, then save or share from Snipping Tool.

Snipping Tool also supports a delay, useful when you need to open a menu before capture. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.

Mac

  • Press Shift+Command+4 and drag over the results area.
  • Press Shift+Command+5 to open Screenshot for additional capture options, including a window or selected area, timer, and save location.

Review the screenshot thumbnail and save or share the capture. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.

6. Record the context for comparisons and evidence

A screenshot shows what was visible; by itself it does not prove that every source of personalization or context was removed. For repeatable comparison, save a short note alongside each image:

  • Exact query and capture date/time, including time zone.
  • Visible location and language, plus device type and browser.
  • Whether you were signed in, which personalization control was off, or whether you selected “Try without.”
  • Whether you used Incognito, and any relevant differences in screen size or browser zoom.

Keep the address bar, query, and relevant footer details in frame when evidence matters. Use the same query and similar capture conditions when comparing images. These details make the conditions interpretable; they do not prove that results should be identical.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot API call, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL as an image. Configure Google’s personalization state separately when the goal is specifically a less account-personalized search view; an API screenshot does not turn off Google’s personalization settings. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is on every plan. Visit ScreenshotNeo or the API documentation.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=example -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.google.com/search?q=example"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://www.google.com/search?q=example'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);

Replace the example query with the encoded search you need. Google may show a consent, verification, or other interstitial page instead of results; check the captured output and the response’s page-verdict and billing headers. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The personalization toggle is missing Google’s updated settings are rolling out gradually, or the account is managed by an organization. Check the account’s Data & privacy settings and Web & App Activity controls. For a managed account, an administrator may control access. Record the setting state you can verify.
“Try without” is not visible The link appears only in some results-page states. Use the persistent setting where available. Do not infer from the missing link that results are universally unpersonalized.
The results look unchanged Personalization may not materially affect that query’s ranking or layout. Check the page note and settings. Google says results can look the same after personalization is turned off.
Two screenshots differ Location, language, device, recent searches, timing, or other context differs. Compare recorded context and repeat with matched conditions. Avoid claiming personalization is the only possible cause.
Incognito still shows tailored or local results Incognito separates the local browser session; it does not remove all context or make the search anonymous. Use Google’s personalization control and record location and language. Do not treat Incognito alone as proof.
Screenshot is cropped or omits the footer The selected capture area did not include the query or state note. Retake using a larger region, window capture, or full-screen capture, then crop only after preserving needed context.
API screenshot shows a consent or verification page Google served an interstitial, or the requested URL did not resolve to ordinary results. Inspect the actual image and page-verdict headers. Do not present an interstitial as a results screenshot; use the browser workflow for an account-specific state.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

For a one-off capture, the built-in OS screenshot tools are the simplest path and have no service fee. For repeatable captures, matching query, timing, language, location, viewport, and sign-in state matters more than using the same capture shortcut. Save the original image and context notes together so later reviewers can interpret it.

Automated screenshot services can capture a requested URL without manually arranging a desktop, but a URL capture is not an account-state guarantee. Google can present different content, including consent or verification screens, and context can still affect results. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with verdict and billing headers on responses. Current plans are Free: 1,000/month; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Confirm the returned page and headers instead of assuming a successful HTTP response means the intended results page was captured.

FAQ

Does turning personalization off make Google results the same for everyone?

No. Location, language, device, recent searches, and other context can still produce differences.

Does “Try without” save my preference?

No. It changes the view for that search and does not alter the saved setting.

Does Incognito hide my searches from Google?

No. It limits what Chrome retains locally after the session; Google sites and network operators may still observe activity.

Can a screenshot prove that a result was not personalized?

It can document the visible page and displayed state, but it cannot establish that every source of variation was removed. Record the settings and context with the image.

Is there a current statistic for how often personalization changes Google results?

The dossier’s cited research reports a historical, study-specific average of 11.7% of Google Web Search results differing due to personalization in a 2017 study of 200 users. It is not a measurement of Google Search today. See Hannák et al., “Measuring Personalization of Web Search”.
