How to Set a Link Preview Image for a Google Sites Website in India

Google Sites does not document a setting for choosing a link preview image. Here’s what you can check, what won’t reliably work, and what to do if a custom image is essential.

If you want to choose the image shown when someone shares your Google Sites link, Google’s current help does not document a setting for selecting a social or messaging preview image. Google Sites lets you publish a site and control who can view it, but those controls do not provide a confirmed way to set the image in an external link card. The research found no separate India-specific setting or procedure.

This guide explains what you can check in Google Sites, why adding a page image is not a reliable fix, and what to consider if a custom preview image is a requirement.

1. Publish the site and check its visibility

First confirm that your site is published and that its published-site visibility matches your needs. These settings control access to the site, not the image a social or messaging service chooses to show.

  1. On a computer, open your site in Google Sites.
  2. Click Publish, enter the site’s web address if prompted, and publish it.
  3. Open Share and review the Published site visibility setting. Google documents Restricted and Public choices; work or school accounts may offer other options.
  4. If the site should be accessible to people who receive the link, choose an appropriate visibility option for your account and organization.
  5. Copy the published URL and share that URL. A preview service may not show a useful card if it cannot access the page.

See Google Sites Help: Publish and share your site for Google’s publishing and visibility instructions. Google also describes a request to opt a public site out of search-engine display, but says the request does not guarantee exclusion. Search visibility is separate from social link previews.

2. Can you choose the preview image in Google Sites?

Google’s reviewed current help documents adding images to page content, but does not document a control for choosing a social link-preview image. A page image, banner, or site icon may affect what a person sees on the site itself; the reviewed guidance does not say that any of these sets the image in an external share card. Do not rely on changing them as a guaranteed fix.

A Google Sites Help Community answer from November 2, 2019, by k8oms, Product Expert Alumni—a community answerer, not a Google employee—said: “We do not have the ability to edit the open graph protocol in Google Sites.” This is dated community guidance, not a current official Google product guarantee. The current official help reviewed for this article still does not document a custom preview-image setting.

Google’s Workspace Learning Center guide explains how to add images to Google Sites pages. It does not describe that action as setting a share-card image. For the dated community answer, see the Google Sites Help Community discussion.

3. What to do if the preview image is unsuitable

  1. Confirm the URL is published and accessible. Review the published-site visibility setting and make sure recipients can open the page.
  2. Share the published site address. Check that you are not sharing an editor or preview link.
  3. Set expectations about page images. Adding an image to the page or changing its banner is not a documented way to control an external preview card.
  4. Decide whether control of the card is essential. If it is, evaluate a platform that documents social preview image controls, including whether it supports the particular pages and sharing destinations you need.

Preview behavior can depend on the service where a link is shared. The research for this guide did not verify how WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn, or other services currently render Google Sites URLs in India. Do not assume that one service’s result predicts another’s.

4. If a custom preview image is a requirement

One option is to use a site platform that documents controls for social preview images. Zoho Sites documents site-wide and per-page social preview image settings and recommends a 16:9 image ratio. Using that feature means evaluating or recreating your site on another platform; it does not add a setting to Google Sites. Check the platform’s current documentation and confirm that its controls fit your pages and the services where you share links. See Zoho Sites’ social preview image guide.

Choice What it means Limitation
Keep the Google Sites site Continue using its publishing and viewer-access controls. The reviewed Google help does not document a custom social preview image control.
Move to a platform with documented preview settings Use documented site-wide or page-specific image controls, such as those described by Zoho Sites. Requires evaluating a different platform and potentially moving or recreating the site. Confirm current details before making a decision.

Compare alternatives by whether you need one image for the whole site or different images per page, the effort of moving your content, and which sharing services matter to you. A documented setting is a stronger basis for control than guessing that a page banner or site icon will be used.

5. Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a published page as an image or PDF; it does not add Open Graph metadata to a Google Sites page or set the image used by another service’s link preview. If your task is to capture the page itself for documentation, review, or an image workflow, you can make a screenshot request.

Or skip the browser setup

For a published page you can access, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://sites.google.com/view/YOUR_SITE -o shot.webp

Replace the example URL with your published Google Sites URL and provide an API key. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

6. Troubleshooting

What you see Likely reason What to check
A purple Google Sites icon or no image The reviewed Google Sites help does not document a control for selecting the external preview image. Confirm the published URL and visibility. If choosing the card image is essential, evaluate a platform with documented social preview controls.
The site image or banner changed, but the link card did not Page imagery is content on the site; the reviewed guidance does not say it sets share-preview metadata. Do not treat banner or page-image changes as a reliable preview-image setting.
Some people cannot open the link The published-site visibility may restrict access, or the link may not be the published URL. Review Share → Published site and share the published address.
The card differs across sharing services Services can render previews differently; current service-specific behavior was not verified for this guide. Check the link in the destination service you care about. Do not assume results transfer between services.
You cannot find a setting in India The research found no India-specific exception or separate workflow for choosing a preview image. Use Google’s general publishing controls, then consider another platform if custom image control is required.
A public site still appears in search results after an opt-out request Google says the request to opt out of search display does not guarantee exclusion; in any case, it is not a social preview control. Keep search visibility and social-card image selection as separate questions.

7. FAQ

The research found no India-specific setting or procedure. The India-locale Google help page covers general publishing and visibility controls.

Will changing my site icon set the image in WhatsApp or another app?

The reviewed guidance does not confirm that. A site icon is not documented there as a way to choose the image in an external share card.

Does making the site public guarantee a preview image?

No. Public visibility can make the page accessible, but it does not provide a documented choice of preview image or guarantee how a sharing service will render the link.

No. ScreenshotNeo captures webpages as images or PDFs; it does not change the metadata of a Google Sites page or control another service’s link card.
