How to Hard Refresh Microsoft Edge

Hard refresh Microsoft Edge on Windows or Mac, learn when to clear cached files, and troubleshoot pages that still do not display correctly.

To hard refresh Microsoft Edge, focus the affected tab and press Ctrl+Shift+R or Shift+F5 on Windows. On Mac, press Command+Shift+R. These reload shortcuts tell Edge to ignore cached content for the reload; they do not delete all browsing data.

Windows Ctrl + Shift + R or Shift + F5 Ctrl + R or F5
Mac Command + Shift + R Command + R

Microsoft’s Edge shortcut reference describes the hard refresh as reloading the current page or tab while ignoring cached content. Put keyboard focus in the Edge tab showing the problem, then use the shortcut. Microsoft documents these shortcuts for desktop Edge on Windows and Mac; the reference does not establish corresponding instructions for mobile Edge. Microsoft’s keyboard shortcuts reference.

What a hard refresh does

A hard refresh requests the current page again while bypassing cached content for that reload. It is useful when a page appears stale or when an updated stylesheet, script, or image has not appeared. The next visit may use cached content again.

A hard refresh is different from clearing the browser cache. Clearing cached images and files is a separate troubleshooting step; it removes stored files, while a hard refresh is a reload command. It also is not the same as deleting cookies, history, saved passwords, or all browsing data.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the affected page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the page or its tab so the Edge window has keyboard focus.
  3. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + R. If needed, try Shift + F5. On Mac, press Command + Shift + R.
  4. Wait for the page to finish reloading and check whether the display is corrected.

There is no setting to enable and no special confirmation dialog. If a shortcut is intercepted by your operating system, keyboard utility, or another application, use the other documented Windows shortcut where available or continue with the cache-clearing steps below.

If hard refresh does not fix the page

Clear cached images and files

Microsoft says clearing cached data can sometimes fix page-display problems. In Edge, go to Settings and more > History > Open history page > Delete browsing data. Choose All time, select Cached images and files, then select Clear now. Review the selections before clearing: you can choose which types of browsing data to remove. Microsoft’s guidance also distinguishes clearing data on the current device from clearing it across synced devices, so check the sync options if that matters to you. Check whether the issue is Edge-specific

Open the same page in another browser. If it fails there too, the cause may be the website or your network rather than Edge’s cache. Microsoft suggests restarting the modem or router when a network issue is suspected, or contacting the site owner if the problem appears to be with the site. If only Edge has the issue, continue troubleshooting Edge. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The shortcut does nothing The page or Edge window does not have keyboard focus, or another app intercepts the keys. Click the affected tab or page, then try the shortcut again. On Windows, try the other documented hard-refresh shortcut.
The page reloads but still looks wrong The problem may not be stale cached content, or cached files may need to be cleared. Clear only cached images and files using Edge’s deletion controls, then reload.
The page fails in Edge and another browser A website or network problem is more likely than an Edge-only cache issue. Check the network, restart the modem or router if appropriate, and contact the site owner if the site remains unavailable.
The page looks different after clearing data Other selected browsing data may have been removed, or the site may need to load its files again. Review which data types were selected before clearing. Cached files will be fetched again when pages load.
You are using Edge on a phone or tablet The cited Microsoft shortcut reference covers Windows and Mac desktop shortcuts, not mobile-keyboard behavior. Use Edge’s available reload and browsing-data controls on that device; do not assume the desktop shortcut applies.

When a developer needs a screenshot after reload

A hard refresh helps you inspect a page in your own browser. If your task is to capture a website as an image or PDF for a report, preview, or automated workflow, a screenshot API can capture the page without setting up browser automation. For debugging, keep in mind that an API capture and your local Edge session can differ because of authentication, cookies, viewport, timing, and network conditions.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For a basic WebP capture, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free account and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hard refresh shortcut in Edge?

On Windows, use Ctrl + Shift + R or Shift + F5. On Mac, use Command + Shift + R.

Does hard refreshing Edge delete cookies?

No. It reloads the page while ignoring cached content. Cookie deletion is a separate browsing-data action.

How do I force Edge to reload without cache?

Use the hard-refresh shortcut for your operating system. If the display problem remains, clear cached images and files from Edge’s browsing-data controls.

Should I hard refresh every time I visit a page?

No. It is a troubleshooting step for stale or incorrectly displayed content, not a requirement for ordinary browsing.
