How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail
Learn to design, export, upload, and test a YouTube thumbnail that clearly and accurately previews your video.
A good YouTube thumbnail tells the right viewer what a video is about at a glance, then matches what the video actually delivers. Start with one clear visual idea, make it readable at small sizes, export to the right aspect ratio and file limit, and upload it in YouTube Studio. Standard videos use a 16:9 image; Shorts use a 9:16 image, and custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added in Studio on a computer.
1. Decide what the thumbnail should promise
Before opening an editor, write down the video’s main idea and who it is for. Choose one subject, result, or moment that makes that idea immediately understandable. The title and thumbnail often appear together, so let them complement each other: the title can explain the topic while the image makes its subject or stakes easy to recognize. Both should accurately set expectations for the video. See YouTube’s thumbnail and title tips.
Keep the promise truthful. A dramatic image can be useful when it represents something the video really covers; an image that suggests an event, result, or claim the video does not deliver misleads viewers and can violate YouTube policy.
2. Compose for a small screen
Build around one focal point. Give it enough space and contrast to remain recognizable when the thumbnail is reduced. YouTube suggests considering the rule of thirds, using branding and descriptive text where useful, and choosing readable type. Avoid filling every gap with labels, effects, and competing subjects; a busy design can be harder to understand quickly.
- Make the subject obvious: crop close enough to recognize a person, object, or result.
- Use text only when it helps: a short label can add context, but the title already appears alongside the thumbnail in many places.
- Check at reduced size: shrink the image in an editor or preview it at roughly the size it will appear in a video list. Confirm that the subject and any text remain legible.
- Check the intended audience: use imagery, tone, and terminology that fit the people the video is for.
- Keep it representative: make sure the image depicts or fairly summarizes the actual video.
There is no official universal color, font, or word-count formula. YouTube says its best-performing videos often use custom thumbnails, but that observation does not guarantee a particular design will perform well. Its advice is to keep the design focused and consider how it displays across devices.
3. Export the right image
YouTube’s current recommendations distinguish standard videos from Shorts. The file-size limit can also depend on upload device. Check the current YouTube thumbnail requirements and the upload interface if requirements have changed since publication.
| Content | Recommended dimensions | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension | Format and size notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 px | 16:9 | Width 640 px | JPG or PNG; desktop uploads up to 50 MB; mobile video-thumbnail uploads up to 2 MB |
| Short | 2160 × 3840 px | 9:16 | Height 640 px | JPG or PNG; desktop uploads up to 50 MB. Follow the current interface for Shorts upload details. |
These are recommendations and limits, not a requirement to buy special equipment or use a paid design app. Use an editor you already have, and export an image that meets the relevant dimensions, aspect ratio, format, and size limit. Podcast playlist thumbnails have separate requirements, including a 1:1 recommendation; do not apply the video or Shorts table blindly to podcasts.
For YouTube’s thumbnail Test & Compare feature, its documentation says that if any test image is below 1280 × 720, experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480. That test-specific threshold is separate from YouTube’s general upload recommendations. See Test & Compare documentation.
4. Upload a custom thumbnail
Standard videos
- Sign in to YouTube Studio. Your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails.
- Open Content and select the video.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select your exported image.
- Save the change. It may take some time for the updated thumbnail to appear everywhere.
YouTube may offer Get suggestions. It also documents Ask Studio suggestions based on a video’s transcript and themes. Availability can depend on the account and current Studio interface.
Shorts
YouTube currently says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. Use the 9:16 recommendation in the table. YouTube also warns that a vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail may show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscriptions on mobile, while the custom image can appear on other surfaces. Check the live preview and current upload instructions for the surfaces that matter to you.
5. Check policy and presentation
Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s thumbnail policies and Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that may lead to rejection and a strike. Its help page says repeat offenses may result in thumbnail privileges being removed for 30 days or account termination; those are stated enforcement possibilities, not a prediction that every case receives the same outcome.
Before publishing, check that the thumbnail:
- accurately represents the video and does not make a false promise;
- is legible at small sizes and works at the aspect ratio for the content type;
- does not use prohibited or harmful imagery; and
- looks as intended in the Studio preview and on the viewing surfaces you can check.
6. Test alternatives when eligible
YouTube Studio’s Test & Compare can compare up to three thumbnail versions for eligible public long-form videos and podcast episodes on desktop. Advanced features must be enabled. The tool is unavailable for Shorts and for videos that are private, made for kids, or set for mature audiences. Results may take a few days or as long as two weeks.
YouTube evaluates watch-time share, not just click-through rate. A result of Winner means YouTube identified a winning thumbnail. Preferred means the evidence was not strong enough for YouTube to call a confident winner; None means it found no strong statistical difference. YouTube may keep a small control group out of the experiment. Read the current Test & Compare guidance for eligibility and result details.
When making variants, change a meaningful visual choice, such as the focal image or composition, while keeping each option accurate. Compare each on the same criteria: immediate clarity, audience fit, small-size readability, accuracy and policy compliance, then the platform’s measured result when eligible. YouTube notes that its concurrent tests can differ from third-party sequential comparisons, which may optimize for click-through rate. One method’s result does not guarantee the same result with another audience or at another time.

If you need a screenshot of a page as part of preparing a thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For example, capture a public reference page in one request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot, and each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The upload option is unavailable or the custom image is rejected. | The account may not be verified, or the file may not meet YouTube’s current format, dimensions, or size requirements. | Verify the account, check the relevant row in the requirements table, and read the current upload page for device-specific limits. |
| The image uploads but looks cropped or awkward on some surfaces. | The content type or display surface uses a different crop or thumbnail treatment. | Use the correct 16:9 or 9:16 design, preview in Studio, and account for YouTube’s noted 4:5 mobile treatment for some vertical-video surfaces. |
| The updated thumbnail is not visible yet. | YouTube says changes may take time to appear. | Wait, then check Studio and the relevant viewing surface again. |
| Test & Compare is missing. | The video or channel may not meet eligibility requirements, or the video may be a Short, private, made for kids, or mature-audience content. | Check that it is a public long-form video or podcast episode, enable Advanced features, use desktop Studio, and consult the current eligibility guidance. |
| A test has no decisive winner. | YouTube may report Preferred or None when the evidence does not support a confident winner or strong statistical difference. | Interpret the result as uncertain or similar performance, not as a guaranteed ranking by click-through rate. Keep the clearest, most accurate option. |
| A thumbnail is rejected or receives a policy notice. | It may violate Community Guidelines or thumbnail policy. | Review the cited policy, replace the image with a compliant and accurate one, and follow YouTube’s notice and appeal process where available. |
Performance, reliability, and cost
A thumbnail is a small image asset, so the practical priorities are meeting YouTube’s file requirements and keeping the main idea readable on the surfaces where viewers encounter it. You do not need to buy a camera, graphics tablet, stylus, lighting kit, or paid editor to follow this workflow. Use YouTube Studio’s upload and suggestion options, and use Test & Compare when the video is eligible.
Testing takes time: YouTube says results can take a few days to two weeks. Avoid treating an early result or a result from a different testing method as conclusive for every audience or future upload. There is no guaranteed thumbnail formula; a clear, truthful design is the sound starting point.
FAQ
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts, with 16:9 and 9:16 ratios respectively. Check the current requirements for upload limits and content-specific exceptions.
Can I add a custom thumbnail to a YouTube Short?
YouTube’s current help guidance says custom Shorts thumbnails can be added in Studio on a computer. The account must be verified. Shorts are not eligible for Test & Compare.
Do I need special software or equipment?
No specific paid app or physical equipment is required. You need an image that follows YouTube’s current requirements and represents the video accurately.
Does Test & Compare choose the image with the highest click-through rate?
No. YouTube says it compares thumbnail performance using watch-time share. A higher click-through rate alone does not establish the winning result in that feature.
