How to Capture a Website Screenshot on iPad in Split-Screen Safari

Capture the Safari webpage visible beside another app, crop out the other pane, or use Full Page to save a long page as an image or PDF.

To capture a website while Safari is beside another app on iPad, take a standard screenshot with the iPad’s buttons, then crop the image to the Safari pane if the other app is included. For a long webpage, choose Full Page in the screenshot preview to capture beyond the visible screen and save it as an image or PDF.

Apple documents that a standard screenshot captures what is on the iPad screen and that apps can be displayed side by side. It is therefore reasonable to expect a standard screenshot to include the visible split-screen workspace, but Apple does not specifically promise pane-only capture in split-screen. Check the preview and crop as needed. Apple’s iPad screenshot guide explains the capture and editing steps, and its multitasking guide covers side-by-side apps.

Take a screenshot in split-screen Safari

  1. Arrange Safari beside the other app and scroll the webpage to the part you want. A standard screenshot captures the currently displayed screen, so make sure the relevant content is visible in Safari.
  2. Use the button combination for your iPad model:
    • iPad without a Home button: Quickly press and release the top button and either volume button at the same time.
    • iPad with a Home button: Quickly press and release the top button and the Home button at the same time.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview when it appears. If the other app is in the image, crop the screenshot to the Safari region. You can also annotate or make other edits in the preview.
  4. Tap Done and choose the save option. Screenshots are saved to Photos by default.

Button placement and screenshot composition can vary with the iPad model, software version, and screen arrangement. Inspect the preview before saving. A normal screenshot captures the displayed screen; it does not select Safari as a separate pane.

Capture the entire Safari webpage

Use Full Page when you need the webpage beyond what is currently visible. Apple describes this option for content extending past the iPad display, including an entire webpage in Safari.

  1. With the page open in Safari, take a screenshot using the appropriate button combination above.
  2. Tap the screenshot preview, then select Full Page at the top of the preview.
  3. Scroll through the full-page preview and crop it if needed.
  4. Save the result as an image in Photos, or choose Save PDF to Files to create a PDF.

Choose based on what you need:

Capture type What it includes Save options
Standard screenshot The displayed iPad screen. In split-screen, expect the visible workspace and crop out the neighboring app if needed. Photos by default
Full Page Supported content that extends beyond the display, such as a long Safari webpage. It is a webpage capture, not a documented way to isolate Safari from the split-screen layout. Image in Photos or PDF in Files

Other ways to trigger a screenshot

If using the buttons is awkward, Apple documents these alternatives:

  • Apple Pencil: Swipe diagonally up from either lower corner of the screen.
  • AssistiveTouch: Use its screenshot control.
  • Siri: Ask Siri to take a screenshot.

These are other ways to trigger a screenshot; they do not select only the Safari pane. Apple Pencil is optional and is not needed for the button method.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean website capture as a file from code or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for its options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const bytes = new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', bytes));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are never billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
The screenshot includes both apps A standard screenshot captures the displayed screen, not an individual split-screen pane. Tap the preview and crop to Safari. If you need a long-page capture, use Full Page and review its preview.
The button combination does not work The combination may not match the iPad’s Home-button design, or the buttons were held instead of pressed and released quickly. Use top plus either volume button on a model without Home; use top plus Home on a model with Home. Press and release both together. Try AssistiveTouch or Siri if needed.
I cannot find the saved screenshot Standard screenshots go to Photos by default; a Full Page PDF may have been saved to Files. Check Photos for an image, or Files if you chose Save PDF to Files.
Full Page is not the result I expected Full Page captures supported content that extends beyond the screen; it is not a documented split-screen pane-isolation feature. Use it for the long Safari page, inspect and crop the preview, or use a standard screenshot for the current display.

FAQ

Can I capture only Safari without cropping?

The cited Apple instructions do not document a split-screen option that selects only Safari. Take the screenshot and crop the preview if the neighboring pane appears.

Does Full Page save as a PDF?

Yes. In the Full Page preview, you can save the page as an image in Photos or choose Save PDF to Files.

Do I need an Apple Pencil to take a screenshot?

No. The button method works without one. Apple Pencil is one optional alternate trigger, alongside AssistiveTouch and Siri.
