How to Save a Mobile Website Screenshot as PNG Instead of PDF on iPhone

Set iPhone screenshots to PNG, save a full Safari page to Photos, and check the file format when you need a verified .png.

To save a regular iPhone screenshot as PNG, open Settings > General > Screen Capture and choose SDR. Apple documents that screenshots use PNG in SDR and HEIF in HDR. In Safari, take a screenshot and choose Full Page if you need the entire webpage; select Save to Photos for an image, rather than Save PDF to Files. Apple describes the full-page Photos save as an image but does not specify its filename extension in that guide, so verify the format if you must deliver a .png file.

1. Set screenshots to PNG

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Screen Capture.
  3. Select SDR.

Apple’s screen capture settings guide states that screenshots use PNG in SDR. HDR screenshots use HEIF instead. This setting determines the format behavior for screenshots; it does not turn a PDF created through Safari’s PDF workflow into an image.

2. Save the visible Safari screen as an image

  1. Open the mobile website in Safari and navigate to the screen you want to capture.
  2. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up together. On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the Side button and Home button together.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview if you want to crop or mark it up, then save it. A standard screenshot is saved to Photos by default.

This captures the visible screen. It does not automatically include the rest of a long webpage below the fold.

3. Save a full webpage image instead of a PDF

  1. In Safari, take a screenshot using the button combination for your iPhone.
  2. Tap Full Page in the screenshot preview. Review or crop the long-page capture if needed.
  3. Choose Save to Photos to save the full-page capture as an image.
  4. Do not choose Save PDF to Files if you need an image.

The full-page controls offer separate image and PDF save destinations. Apple’s guide identifies the Photos option as saving an image, but does not explicitly state that every full-page image export has a .png extension. If a submission system or developer workflow requires a file specifically ending in .png, check the exported file’s format before sending it.

4. Why Safari saved a PDF

You may have used Safari’s separate webpage-to-PDF workflow: Share > Markup > Done. Apple documents that route for annotating and saving a webpage as a PDF. To save a screenshot image, use the screenshot preview and its Save to Photos destination instead.

5. Choose the right capture and format

Need Use Result to expect
Only the content currently visible Take a normal screenshot Saved to Photos by default; SDR screenshots use PNG
The whole long webpage Screenshot, then Full Page and Save to Photos An image saved to Photos; verify extension if .png is mandatory
A document for printing or sharing as pages Save PDF to Files PDF, not PNG
HDR screenshot capture HDR screen capture setting HEIF screenshots, according to Apple

6. Verify the file when PNG is a hard requirement

For an ordinary screenshot, selecting SDR is Apple’s documented PNG setting. For a full-page save, the cited Apple instructions describe the Photos output as an image without naming its extension. If the receiving service checks the file type, inspect the exported file’s details or open it in an image tool that reports its format. Do not infer the extension solely from choosing Photos.

  • Visible screen: use a normal screenshot with SDR selected.
  • Entire page: use Full Page and Save to Photos, then verify the exported format if required.
  • PDF appeared: repeat the capture and choose Save to Photos, or leave the Share > Markup PDF flow.

7. Troubleshooting

What happened Likely cause What to do
The screenshot is HEIF rather than PNG Screen Capture is set to HDR Go to Settings > General > Screen Capture and choose SDR, then take a new screenshot.
The saved webpage is a PDF in Files You chose Save PDF to Files or used Share > Markup Capture again, choose Full Page, then Save to Photos.
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport You saved a standard screenshot without selecting Full Page Take a screenshot in Safari and tap Full Page in the preview before saving.
You cannot find the normal screenshot It is saved in Photos by default, rather than the PDF destination in Files Check the Photos library. For a PDF, check the Files location you selected.
A full-page image does not show a .png extension Apple’s full-page guide promises an image destination but does not specify the extension Verify the exported file’s actual format. Use the regular SDR screenshot path when you need Apple’s explicitly documented PNG screenshot behavior.

8. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a website capture from a developer workflow rather than from the iPhone itself, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Adapt the output format and capture options to the file you need. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

9. FAQ

Does changing to SDR convert an existing PDF?

No. The setting describes screenshot capture format. Capture the webpage again and select Save to Photos for an image.

Does Full Page mean the result is definitely PNG?

Apple describes Save to Photos as saving an image, but its full-page instructions do not specify the extension. Verify the exported file when .png is required.

Is Safari’s Markup option the same as the screenshot preview?

No. Apple documents Share > Markup > Done as a webpage PDF workflow. Use the screenshot preview’s Save to Photos option for an image.
