Why JPG Files Do Not Show Previews and How to Fix Them

Learn why JPG thumbnails, the Preview pane, or Microsoft Photos may fail—and follow the right Windows and OneDrive fix.

When a JPG does not show a preview, first identify which preview is missing:

  • Folder thumbnails: images appear as generic file icons in File Explorer.
  • Preview pane: you select a file, but the right-side pane is blank or disabled.
  • Photos app: Microsoft Photos cannot open the image.

These symptoms have different causes. Work through the matching section below instead of changing codecs or registry settings at random.

1. Restore JPG thumbnails in File Explorer

Choose an icon view that supports thumbnails

  1. Open the folder containing the JPG files.
  2. Select View.
  3. Choose Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons. List, Details, and small icon views may show file icons instead of useful image previews.

Microsoft documents these File Explorer view controls for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact menu wording can vary by release.

Check that thumbnails have not been disabled

  1. In File Explorer, open Folder Options (you can search for it from the Start menu).
  2. Open the View tab.
  3. Look for the setting that displays file icons instead of thumbnails.
  4. If that setting is enabled, clear it, apply the change, and reopen the folder.

The setting controls Explorer’s thumbnail behavior. It does not repair a damaged JPG and it does not change how Microsoft Photos opens files.

2. Check whether OneDrive has downloaded the image

OneDrive can show a cloud placeholder while the complete file remains online. In a OneDrive folder:

  1. Use Medium icons or a larger view.
  2. Right-click the JPG.
  3. Choose Always keep on this device.
  4. Wait for the download and sync to finish, then refresh the folder.

Microsoft says OneDrive does not provide previews or thumbnails for images larger than 100 MB. This limit is specific to OneDrive; do not assume another cloud provider has the same rule.

3. Test the file in Microsoft Photos

JPEG is a format supported by Microsoft Photos. Open one affected file directly:

  1. Right-click the file and choose Open with > Photos.
  2. Try a known-good JPG from another folder.
  3. Confirm the filename really ends in .jpg or .jpeg; enabling file-name extensions in Explorer can reveal a file that was renamed incorrectly.

If Photos cannot open the file, the problem may be an incomplete download, corruption, or a file whose contents do not match its extension. The Microsoft guidance used here does not establish a universal repair procedure, so do not assume that installing a broad codec pack will fix an ordinary JPG thumbnail problem. Codec packages are aimed at media decoding and optional video formats, while Photos already supports JPEG.

4. Understand the Preview pane security change

A blank Preview pane is different from missing folder thumbnails. Microsoft states that, starting with Windows security updates released on and after October 14, 2025, File Explorer automatically disables previewing files downloaded from the internet. The change reduces the risk of NTLM hash leakage when a file contains certain external HTML references.

If the file came from a browser, email, or another untrusted source, Explorer may display a security warning or refuse to render the pane. Verify the source before changing its trust state. Do not indiscriminately bypass the protection for unknown files.

This behavior applies to the Preview pane. It is not a general explanation for every missing JPG thumbnail in a local folder.

5. Diagnose the scope before escalating

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. If you are troubleshooting Windows 10, label the machine and build when reporting the issue; menu names and security behavior can differ from Windows 11.

6. Common errors and fixes

“I installed a codec pack, but thumbnails are still missing.”

Normal JPG thumbnails do not require a special video codec according to the cited Microsoft format guidance. Recheck Explorer’s icon size and thumbnail setting, then test whether Photos opens the file.

“The Preview pane is blank only for downloads.”

That matches the post-October 14, 2025 internet-file protection. Confirm that the file is trustworthy before taking any action to change its blocked state.

“OneDrive shows the file name but no image.”

The file may be online-only, the view may be too small, or the image may exceed OneDrive’s 100 MB preview limit. Use a medium or larger icon view and choose Always keep on this device.

“Only one JPG fails everywhere.”

Compare it with a known-good image. Check the extension, download completion, and whether Photos can open it. If the contents are damaged, Explorer settings will not repair the file; obtain a fresh copy or restore it from a backup.

“A cache reset did not help.”

There is no single Microsoft-supported cache-reset procedure in the sources for every Windows release. Avoid presenting registry edits or cache deletion as guaranteed fixes. Gather the Windows build, storage location, file provenance, and affected scope before escalating.

7. Reliability and performance considerations

  • Local files: thumbnails depend mainly on Explorer’s view and thumbnail setting.
  • Cloud files: downloading the original can take time and consumes local storage; wait for OneDrive to finish syncing before judging the result.
  • Large images: OneDrive’s documented 100 MB preview limit can make a valid image appear without a thumbnail.
  • Security checks: downloaded-file Preview pane restrictions are intentional and may remain after normal Explorer refreshes.
  • Supportability: record the Windows version and exact symptom before changing system settings.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot of a page, dashboard, or documentation image while investigating a visual issue, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots through take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

FAQ

Is JPG the same as JPEG for previews?

They are common filename extensions for the JPEG format. Photos supports JPEG; a missing thumbnail usually points to Explorer, storage state, security behavior, or a damaged file.

Does changing the default photo app restore thumbnails?

Usually no. The default app controls opening the file, while Explorer’s view and thumbnail settings control folder previews.

Why can I open an image but not preview it in Explorer?

Opening and thumbnail generation are separate operations. Check the icon view, thumbnail setting, OneDrive availability, and whether the file was downloaded from the internet.

Should I disable Windows security updates to restore previews?

No. The downloaded-file Preview pane restriction is a security mitigation. Verify files and follow your organization’s security policy instead.

What information should I include when asking for help?

Include Windows version and build, whether the file is local or cloud-only, its approximate size, whether it was downloaded, whether Photos opens it, and whether the issue affects one file, one folder, or all JPGs.
