How to Take a Manual Screenshot on iPhone

Learn the correct iPhone button shortcut, alternatives without hardware buttons, full-page captures, editing, storage, and troubleshooting.

The shortcut depends on your iPhone model:

  • iPhone with Face ID: Quickly press and release the side button and Volume Up button together.
  • iPhone with a Home button and side button: Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
  • iPhone with a Home button and top button: Quickly press and release the top button and Home button together.

Press both buttons at the same time, then release immediately. Do not hold them down. A screenshot preview or editing controls confirm that it worked. Apple documents these steps in its iPhone screenshot instructions.

Choose the button combination for your iPhone

iPhone layout Buttons Action
Face ID Side + Volume Up Press and release both together
Home button and side button Side + Home Press and release both together
Home button and top button Top + Home Press and release both together

If you are unsure which layout you have, look for a physical Home button below the display. If there is no Home button, use the Face ID combination.

Step-by-step: capture and edit the screenshot

  1. Open the screen you want to save.
  2. Press the correct two buttons simultaneously.
  3. Release them quickly.
  4. Tap the preview to open editing tools, or swipe it away to save immediately.

On iOS 26, the screenshot appears automatically with quick tools. On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail appears at the lower-left corner. From the preview you can crop, annotate, share, or save the image.

Find the saved screenshot

Open Photos, select Collections, scroll to Media Types, and tap Screenshots. Screenshots are stored there automatically after capture.

Take a full-page screenshot in Safari

For a webpage that extends beyond the visible screen:

  1. Open the page in Safari and take a normal screenshot.
  2. Tap the screenshot preview.
  3. Select Full Page when that option is available.
  4. Use the page preview to select the captured area, then save or share it.

Full-page capture is available only in supported contexts, such as webpages in Safari. Apps that do not expose a full-page document view may show only the visible screen.

Screenshot without pressing the hardware buttons

Apple lists Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap as alternatives to the hardware shortcut. Choose based on your iPhone model, iOS version, and accessibility needs.

Back Tap

Back Tap works on iPhone 8 or later with the latest iOS version, as described by Apple. Set it up once:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Touch, then Back Tap.
  3. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
  4. Select Screenshot.
  5. Double- or triple-tap the back of the iPhone to capture the screen.

A case, tapping angle, or background activity can affect recognition. If taps trigger inconsistently, try the other gesture or remove a thick case while testing.

AssistiveTouch

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch.
  2. Turn on AssistiveTouch.
  3. Tap the onscreen AssistiveTouch button and choose Screenshot.

You can customize the menu and assign screenshot actions to button gestures in AssistiveTouch settings.

Siri

Invoke Siri and ask it to take a screenshot. The exact spoken wording can vary with Siri and iOS behavior, so use a natural request such as “Take a screenshot.” Siri may require the relevant language, voice, and accessibility settings to be enabled.

Which method should you use?

Method Setup Input Best fit
Button shortcut None Two physical buttons Fast, one-off captures
Back Tap One-time setting Double or triple tap on the back When buttons are hard to press
AssistiveTouch One-time setting Onscreen menu Touch-accessibility workflows
Siri Usually none Voice Hands-free capture

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens

Make sure both buttons are pressed at exactly the same time and released quickly. A long press can open the power or voice-assistant controls instead. Try pressing the buttons with the phone unlocked on a normal app screen.

The volume or power menu appears

You probably held the buttons too long or pressed one before the other. Use a short, simultaneous press and release.

The screenshot preview disappeared

The image is still saved. Open Photos and browse to Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.

Back Tap does not trigger

Confirm that Back Tap is enabled and assigned to Screenshot. Check that your iPhone is an iPhone 8 or later, update iOS, and try tapping the center of the back twice or three times. A thick case can reduce detection.

AssistiveTouch has no Screenshot action

Open the AssistiveTouch menu customization settings and add Screenshot, or assign it to a single tap, double tap, or long press.

Full Page is missing

Full Page appears only where the current app supports a document-length capture. Try Safari on a webpage, then open the screenshot preview again.

The screenshot is black or incomplete

Some apps restrict screen capture for privacy or security. Try capturing a different screen, or use the app’s own export or share function when available.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of webpages from code, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request API instead of configuring an iPhone or browser automation. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. Basic request examples:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Performance, reliability, and storage notes

  • Use the hardware shortcut for the lowest-friction single capture.
  • For repeated captures, Back Tap or AssistiveTouch avoids repeated button presses.
  • Review the preview before sharing if the screen contains private notifications or account details.
  • Full-page captures can be much taller than a normal screenshot; crop or export only the needed section before sending it.
  • Keep enough free storage in Photos for repeated screenshots and videos.

Where are iPhone screenshots stored?

Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.

Can every iPhone take a full-page screenshot?

Full-page capture depends on the app and context. Safari webpages are a common supported case.

Do screenshots include the status bar?

They capture the current screen as displayed, including whatever status information the app and iOS show at that moment.
