MHTML to PDF Online
Convert an MHTML or MHT archive to PDF with Edge or Firefox, check layout and privacy, and learn when an online converter or ScreenshotNeo fits.
Yes. If your .mhtml or .mht archive opens in a compatible browser, the most dependable online-free method is to open it and use the browser’s Print command with Save as PDF. Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox document this workflow. Preview the result for missing images, page breaks, margins and selectable text before sharing it.
What MHTML is
MHTML (also written MHT) is a web-archive format. Chrome’s pageCapture documentation describes it as encapsulating a page and its resources, such as CSS and images, in one file. A PDF is a fixed-page document, so conversion can change pagination, backgrounds and interactive content.
An archive can preserve only the resources that were saved with it. If images, fonts or styles were not included, a converter cannot recreate them. Fileverter also advises that its converter works best when the archive contains the needed images and styles.
Method 1: Convert MHTML to PDF in Microsoft Edge
- Open the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile in Edge. If it does not open, see the compatibility section below. - Open the menu and choose Print, or press
Ctrl+Pon Windows orCommand+Pon macOS. These shortcuts are documented in Microsoft’s Edge print guide. - Set the destination to Save as PDF. If your system exposes a PDF printer, that is another valid destination.
- Choose paper size, orientation, margins and scale. Enable Background graphics when the archive’s colors or images depend on backgrounds.
- Open the system print dialog if you need additional printer or PDF settings, then save the file.
- Open the resulting PDF and inspect every page.
Microsoft says that when Edge prints to a printer, application or PDF, it sends print commands and file information to your device’s operating system rather than back to Microsoft. That statement applies to Edge’s documented print path; it does not describe third-party upload services.
Method 2: Convert MHTML to PDF in Firefox
- Open the archive in Firefox if your installation and operating system support it.
- Open the application menu and select Print, or press
Ctrl+P/Command+P. - In the destination dropdown, choose Save to PDF. Mozilla documents this option in How to print web pages in Firefox.
- Adjust page size, orientation, margins, scale and background options.
- Save the PDF and verify its layout and text.
How to check the converted PDF
- Images: confirm that every chart, logo and photo appears. Missing images usually mean they were not embedded in the archive or were blocked while it opened.
- Page breaks: look for headings stranded at the bottom of a page, tables split incorrectly and content cut off at the right edge.
- Text: select and copy a paragraph. Some conversion routes produce image-only pages, while browser printing may preserve selectable text; verify your actual file.
- Fonts and colors: compare important typography and background colors with the browser preview.
- Links: test links if the PDF will be used as a reference document. Printing does not guarantee that every interactive behavior survives.
- File size: large embedded images can create a large PDF. Reprint with a lower scale only if readability remains acceptable.
Online converters: when to use one
An online converter can accept an MHTML file directly and may expose a separate download or browser-print route. Processing, retention and deletion policies differ by service, so read the current policy before uploading a sensitive archive. Do not assume that an “online” converter is private or that processing happens locally.
For example, Fileverter describes an image-based PDF option and a separate browser-print option that may preserve selectable text. Those are the vendor’s stated characteristics; preview the output yourself. A local browser print path is usually easier to justify for confidential archives because the file does not need to be uploaded to a conversion website.
Compatibility and opening an MHT file
Support is not universal. Edge policy documentation describes particular Windows and enterprise-policy behavior for downloaded and local MHT/MHTML files, including Internet Explorer mode settings. These documents are configuration references, not a promise that every consumer installation opens every archive.
Chrome’s pageCapture documentation says MHTML can be loaded only from the file system and only in the main frame for security reasons. Chrome can create MHTML through its extension API, but that does not mean every Chrome setup will open an arbitrary archive by double-clicking it.
If the file will not open
- Copy the archive to a local folder and open it from the browser’s file-open dialog.
- Try another compatible browser on the same device.
- On managed Windows devices, ask an administrator whether Edge MHT policies or Internet Explorer mode restrictions are enforced.
- Confirm the extension is really
.mhtor.mhtmland that the file was transferred completely. - If the archive opens only partially, its MIME boundaries or embedded resources may be damaged; request a fresh archive from the source.
Common errors and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “File cannot be opened” | Browser, operating-system or enterprise-policy incompatibility | Try Edge or Firefox, open from a local folder, and check managed-device policies. |
| Blank pages in the PDF | The archive contains missing resources or a page that depends on scripts that no longer run | Compare the opened archive with its original source and obtain a new archive if content was not embedded. |
| Images are missing | Images were not saved in the archive, use blocked URLs or lazy-load outside the captured content | Check the archive in the browser; if images are absent there, conversion cannot restore them. |
| Text is tiny or clipped | Scale, paper size or orientation is unsuitable | Use landscape for wide pages, increase paper size, adjust scale and inspect print preview. |
| Background colors disappear | Background graphics are disabled | Enable the browser’s background-graphics option before saving. |
| PDF text cannot be selected | The chosen converter produced image pages | Use the browser’s Save as PDF route and compare text selection in the saved file. |
| Output differs between browsers | Different print engines and CSS support | Use the browser that renders the archive correctly and keep a copy of the print settings. |
Privacy, reliability and cost considerations
- Privacy: local printing avoids uploading the archive. For an online service, verify current retention, deletion and processing terms before selecting a file.
- Reliability: keep the original MHTML beside the PDF. The PDF is a rendering of the saved archive, not a guarantee of perfect visual reproduction.
- Performance: very large archives with many images can take longer to open and print. Close unrelated tabs, wait for the archive to finish rendering and inspect the print preview before saving.
- Cost: Edge and Firefox print-to-PDF workflows do not require a paid conversion service or physical printer when the operating system offers Save as PDF.
Or skip the browser setup
If you have the original live URL rather than only a local MHTML file, ScreenshotNeo can render that URL and return an image or PDF through one API request. It is not a local-file MHTML decoder, so use the browser workflow above when the archive is your only copy. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for PDF output and page settings.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. FAQ
Can I convert MHT to PDF without uploading it?
Yes. Open it in a compatible browser and use Save as PDF. This keeps the documented conversion path on your device.
Will the PDF look exactly like the archived page?
No guarantee applies. Print CSS, missing resources, browser differences and page-break rules can change the result, so inspect the finished PDF.
Does an MHTML file contain the original website?
It contains the page and resources that were captured. It may omit resources that were lazy-loaded, blocked or unavailable when the archive was created.
Which browser should I choose?
Use the browser that opens and renders your archive correctly. Edge and Firefox both document Save as PDF workflows, while MHTML loading can depend on operating system and policy settings.
