How to Print a Firefox Webpage to PDF Instead of Taking a Screenshot

Save a Firefox webpage as a PDF from Print Preview, choose page and layout settings, and learn when a screenshot is the better format.

To save a Firefox webpage as a PDF, open the page, choose Print from the Firefox menu, select Save to PDF as the destination, review the preview and settings, then choose Print to save the file. Use this when you need a paginated document. Use Firefox’s screenshot tool when you need an image of the visible page or the full page.

  1. Open the webpage in Firefox.
  2. Open the Firefox menu and choose Print…. Firefox opens Print Preview.
  3. In Destination, choose Save to PDF.
  4. Review the preview. Set the page range and, if needed, adjust the paper size, orientation, scale, margins, and other print options.
  5. Choose Print, then select where to save the PDF and give it a filename if prompted.

Firefox’s print workflow and settings are documented in Mozilla’s guide to printing web pages in Firefox. The exact appearance of the preview can vary by page and settings.

Choose PDF or screenshot

A PDF is appropriate when you want a document with pages, print layout controls, and the option to include only selected pages. A screenshot is an image capture; it is useful when you need to preserve how a page or part of it looks on screen.

Need Use Why
A document to save, share, or print Print to PDF Print Preview provides page-oriented settings and page selection.
An image of the visible area, a selected region, an element, or the whole page Firefox Screenshot Firefox’s screenshot tool captures page content as an image or copies it to the clipboard.

To open Firefox’s screenshot interface, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. You can also choose Take Screenshot from the context menu. Choose Download to save an image or Copy to put it on the clipboard. See Mozilla’s screenshot instructions.

Adjust the PDF layout and content

Review the preview before saving. Mozilla notes that webpages can be arranged differently for paper than on screen, so headings, images, and other content may shift or paginate differently.

  • Pages: Choose the pages to include when you need only part of a long document.
  • Orientation: Try portrait or landscape depending on the page’s shape and content.
  • Paper size, scale, and margins: Adjust these if content is clipped, too small, or awkwardly spaced.
  • Pages per sheet: Use the available layout setting if you need multiple document pages on each sheet.
  • Headers and footers: Review whether browser-added page details should appear in the saved document.
  • Print backgrounds: Enable this if background colors or images are important to the page’s appearance.
  • Format: Choose Original or Simplified when available. Simplified can remove clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images.

If you select Simplified, Firefox does not allow Print backgrounds at the same time. Simplified may not be available for every page, and it may be absent when Reader View is already active. See Mozilla’s instructions for simplified, clutter-free printing.

Get a less cluttered PDF

  1. Open Print Preview and check whether Simplified is available under Format.
  2. Select it if you want a more text-focused result. Inspect the preview because it can change which page elements are included.
  3. If the page supports Reader View, you can turn that on before printing and review the result.
  4. Save only after checking that the content you need remains in the preview.

For a page that needs edits before printing, Mozilla mentions the Print Edit WE extension as an optional approach. Check its current availability and capabilities before relying on it; the built-in print workflow is the direct way to save a PDF.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to try
The PDF looks different from the webpage Webpages can use a print layout that differs from their on-screen layout. Inspect Print Preview and adjust scale, orientation, margins, or format before saving.
Background colors or images are missing Print backgrounds may be disabled, or Simplified format may be selected. Check the background setting. If Simplified is selected, switch to Original if you need backgrounds; the two settings cannot be used together.
The Simplified option is missing A simplified version may not be available, or Reader View may already be enabled. Use the available print format, or leave Reader View and check Print Preview again.
Content is clipped or too small The page content may not fit the selected paper size, scale, or orientation. Try a different orientation, adjust scale or margins, and check the preview again.
You saved a PDF but needed an image Print to PDF creates a document rather than a screenshot. Use Firefox Screenshot and choose Download for an image, or Copy to copy the capture.
You cannot find the saved file The save dialog may have used a different folder or filename than expected. Check the destination selected in the save dialog and the filename used when saving.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return an image or PDF; consult the ScreenshotNeo documentation for PDF options and the full request configuration. This one-call example captures a webpage as an image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads are never billed, and cache hits cost nothing. Response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
