How to Print a Web Page Without Pictures

Remove unwanted images from a web page before printing or saving it as a PDF. The available controls depend on your browser and the page.

You can print a web page without some or all of its pictures using a reading or simplified view, if your browser and the page support one. There is no universal print setting that removes every picture: Firefox’s Simplified format can remove background images and surrounding clutter, Chrome’s Images toggle applies within Reading mode, and Edge’s Background graphics setting concerns page backgrounds rather than ordinary inline photos. Open print preview and check the result before printing or saving a PDF.

Choose the method for your browser

Browser Option What it can affect Best for
Firefox Simplified format or Reader View Simplified format can remove surrounding clutter and background images; Reader View provides a reading-focused page when supported. Text-heavy pages where a simplified version is available.
Chrome Reading mode, then Images off The Images control applies to content in Reading mode, not all Chrome content or the original page’s standard print dialog. Reading-mode pages where hiding images leaves the text you need.
Edge Background graphics checkbox Page background graphics. It is not a documented control for removing ordinary inline pictures. Pages where the unwanted ink is in the background.

Browser features and their placement can vary by version, operating system, and page support. If the relevant reading or simplified view is unavailable, the built-in print settings may not remove inline images.

Firefox: print in Simplified format

  1. Open the page’s menu and choose Print.
  2. In print settings, expand More settings and look for Format.
  3. If available, choose Simplified. Check the preview to see whether the page has been cleaned up as needed.
  4. Print the page, or choose a PDF destination to save it as a PDF.

Firefox offers Simplified only when a simplified version is available. Mozilla says the format can remove surrounding clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images. It also disables the Print backgrounds option. The control may not appear if Reader View was already enabled before printing.

Use Firefox Reader View instead

On a page that supports it, turn on Reader View, then open Print and inspect the preview. Reader View is another print-friendly route, but availability depends on the page. Mozilla’s instructions cover both simplified printing and printing web pages in Firefox: Print simplified, clutter-free pages in Firefox and How to print web pages in Firefox.

Chrome: hide images in Reading mode

  1. Open Reading mode using the address-bar icon or the browser menu. Google documents Alt+Shift+R on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, and Command+Option+R on macOS.
  2. Open Reading mode settings and turn Images off.
  3. If printing is available from the resulting view, open print preview and verify that the text and layout are suitable.
  4. Print, or select a PDF destination if offered in the print flow.

The Images toggle is scoped to Reading mode; do not assume it changes the standard print dialog for the original webpage. Google’s guidance explains how to use Reading mode in Chrome. To print from Chrome, use Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac, then choose a destination and settings. See Print from Chrome.

Edge: understand the Background graphics setting

  1. Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
  2. Expand More settings.
  3. Turn Background graphics off if you want to omit webpage backgrounds, then inspect the preview.

This setting addresses background graphics; it should not be treated as a switch that removes ordinary inline pictures. Edge also documents a clutter-free print option for removing surrounding material such as ads and site navigation, but Microsoft says it is being released, so it may not be available to everyone. See Microsoft’s Print in Microsoft Edge guidance.

Check the preview before printing

  1. Open print preview after changing the reading or print settings.
  2. Confirm the unwanted pictures are gone. Background removal alone may leave inline photographs in place.
  3. Check that headings, links, instructions, and other essential text remain readable and are not cut off.
  4. Choose your printer or a PDF destination, then print or save.

Preview is the reliable way to see what the browser will produce. If an image remains, try a supported reading or simplified view. If the page does not offer one, the browser’s built-in controls described here may not be able to suppress that inline image.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean screenshot or PDF of a web page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

For this title’s no-picture print task, the browser’s reading and simplified views are the direct built-in options. ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need a repeatable capture workflow, PDF output, or API and agent integration; the API facts do not promise a universal switch to remove every inline picture.

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Firefox has no Simplified format option The page may not have a simplified version, or Reader View was enabled before printing. Try printing from the page without Reader View already enabled, or turn on Reader View and print from there if the page supports it.
Chrome print still includes pictures The Images toggle applies to Reading mode, not the original page’s standard print dialog. Open Reading mode, turn Images off in its settings, and check whether printing from that view is available.
Edge still prints inline photos Background graphics controls backgrounds, not ordinary inline images. Try a clutter-free print option if your Edge version offers it, or use another supported reading view.
Text is missing or the page looks different Simplified or Reading mode can change the page content and layout. Compare with the original page and review the print preview before committing to paper.
There is no PDF option in the page itself PDF saving is usually selected as a destination in the browser’s print flow. Open print, inspect the available destinations, and choose the PDF option if your operating system and browser provide it.

Performance, reliability, and cost

The browser methods use built-in features and the existing print flow; the practical constraint is whether that browser and page offer a suitable reading or simplified view. Preview takes a moment but helps catch missing text or images that remain. The cited instructions provide no universal ink-savings estimate, and results depend on the page and settings.

For occasional paper printing or saving a page as PDF, start with the browser’s built-in controls. For automated screenshot or PDF capture, an API can avoid repeated manual browser steps, but it is a different workflow from controlling a printer’s output.

FAQ

Can I remove every image from any web page with one print setting?

No universal setting is established by the browser instructions here. Image removal depends on the browser mode, page support, and whether the image is a background or inline content.

Does turning off background graphics remove photos?

It targets page backgrounds. Do not expect it to remove ordinary inline photos.

Can I save the image-free result as a PDF?

Yes, when the browser or operating system offers a PDF destination in its print flow. Verify the preview first.

Will Reader View work on every page?

No. Reading and simplified views are available only where the browser can provide them for that page.
