How to Refresh a Web Page in Safari
Refresh Safari on iPhone by pulling down on the page. On Mac, choose View > Reload Page or press Command-R.
To refresh a page in Safari, use the method for your device:
- iPhone: Open the page and pull down from the top of the page. Apple’s iPhone Safari guide describes this gesture as refreshing the page.
- Mac: Choose View > Reload Page, or press Command-R. Apple lists both methods in its Safari troubleshooting guidance for Mac.
A refresh asks Safari to load the page again. It can help when a page looks stale or did not finish loading, but it cannot fix a site outage, a broken page, or a lost network connection.
Refresh a page on iPhone
- Open Safari and navigate to the page.
- Pull down from the top of the page, then release.
- Wait for Safari to finish loading before trying again.
Safari can place its address bar at the top or bottom of the screen. The pull-down gesture is the relevant action; you do not need to find a particular reload button location. See Apple’s iPhone Safari guide.
Refresh a page on Mac
- Bring Safari to the front and open the page you want to reload.
- Choose View > Reload Page from the menu bar, or press Command-R.
If the keyboard shortcut does not work as expected, use the menu command. Apple notes that shortcuts can vary with language and keyboard layout; check its Safari keyboard shortcuts reference.
If reloading does not fix the page
Do not keep refreshing a page that remains broken. Try these steps to narrow down the cause:
- Reload once and wait. A slow connection or site may need more time. Repeated reloads do not repair a server-side problem.
- Close and reopen Safari. Apple recommends this if Safari does not reload a page as expected. Then revisit the page.
- Check whether the problem is limited to one site. If other sites load, the issue may be with that website. Contact its owner if the problem persists.
- Review network and privacy settings. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance covers website data, extensions, browser settings, Private Relay, VPN or security software, and network settings as possible sources of Safari problems.
- Remove site data only when needed. Website data can include stored state. Before removing data for a site, make sure you know the sign-in information you may need afterward.
For symptom-specific steps, use Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance. On Safari 26 and later, Apple also describes a Report a Website Issue option after reloading a page.
Or skip the browser setup
If you are a developer who needs a screenshot of a page after refreshing it, ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through one API request. It is not needed for an ordinary Safari refresh, but it can be useful when you need a repeatable capture for a workflow.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

FAQ
Does refreshing Safari clear my browsing history?
No. Refreshing reloads the current page; it is not the same as clearing browsing history or website data.
Why does Command-R not reload the page on my Mac?
Keyboard shortcuts may vary with language and keyboard layout. Use Safari’s View > Reload Page menu command instead.
Will refreshing fix a website that is down?
No. Reloading can request the page again, but it cannot fix a website outage or a problem with your internet connection.
