How to Remove Link Thumbnails from WhatsApp
Turn off WhatsApp link previews on Android or iPhone so shared URLs appear without thumbnails or rich cards.
To remove link thumbnails from WhatsApp, enable Disable link previews. On Android, open WhatsApp and go to ⋮ > Settings > Privacy > Advanced, then turn on Disable link previews. On iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy > Advanced, then turn on the same setting.
WhatsApp describes this as an account-level privacy control: when enabled, links you send will not generate a link preview. It removes the fetched thumbnail, title and description from outgoing links; it does not edit the destination page itself.
Remove link thumbnails on Android
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Privacy.
- Tap Advanced.
- Enable Disable link previews.
After the setting is enabled, links you send should appear as URLs without a generated preview card. If a preview was already generated in a message draft, remove the URL and paste it again after changing the setting.
Remove link thumbnails on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Settings in the bottom navigation.
- Tap Privacy.
- Open Advanced.
- Turn on Disable link previews.
Start a new message and paste the URL again to confirm that no thumbnail is generated.
What the setting changes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is it global or per message? | The documented control is an account-level setting. WhatsApp does not document it here as a per-message thumbnail editor. |
| Does it delete the URL? | No. The recipient still receives the link you send. |
| Does it change the website? | No. It only prevents WhatsApp from generating a preview for links you send. |
| Does it remove previews from old messages? | The setting applies to links you send after it is enabled. Existing messages are not described as being rewritten. |
| Does it apply to every WhatsApp client? | The sourced steps cover Android and iPhone. WhatsApp Web and Windows/Mac desktop menu paths are version-dependent. |
Why disable link previews?
A preview requires WhatsApp or the linked service to obtain metadata such as the page title and image. The Electronic Frontier Foundation warns: “Link previews can reveal sensitive information about you to the website you are linking to.” This matters especially for URLs containing tracking tokens, private identifiers or other information that should not be fetched automatically.
Turning off previews is useful when you want to share a bare URL, reduce metadata exposure or avoid sending an attention-grabbing image with a link.
When the thumbnail still appears
Check that the setting is enabled
Return to Privacy > Advanced and verify that Disable link previews is on. Menu labels can move after WhatsApp updates, so search WhatsApp Settings for “link preview” if you cannot find the option.
Paste the link into a new draft
WhatsApp may already have fetched metadata while the old draft was open. Delete the URL from the composer, wait briefly, then paste it again after enabling the setting.
Update WhatsApp
An outdated build may show different labels or behavior. Install the latest version available for your device, then revisit the privacy setting.
Confirm that you are testing an outgoing link
The documented behavior concerns links you send. A preview that someone else sent, a quoted message or an older conversation may not change when you toggle the setting.
Do not assume a desktop menu exists
The available authoritative instructions establish the mobile paths only. WhatsApp Web and desktop behavior may depend on the client version and the account setting synchronized from your phone. Check the current desktop privacy menus before relying on a specific path.
Privacy and sharing checklist
- Turn on Disable link previews before pasting sensitive URLs.
- Remove tracking parameters from a URL when the destination supports a clean link.
- Review links for passwords, access tokens, email addresses or private IDs before sending.
- Use a new chat draft after changing the setting so an earlier preview is not reused.
- Remember that disabling previews does not make the destination URL private from the recipient.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to create clean website images for documentation or sharing, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits cost nothing, with the result reported in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all capture options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.whatsapp.com/ -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.whatsapp.com/"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.whatsapp.com/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also includes an MCP server so Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting quick reference
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail appears immediately after pasting | The setting is off or the old draft was cached. | Enable the setting, delete the URL and paste it into a new draft. |
| The Advanced menu is missing | Your WhatsApp version uses different navigation. | Update WhatsApp and search Settings for “link preview”. |
| Android steps do not match | Device or app UI variation. | Use the three-dot menu, then Settings, Privacy and Advanced. |
| iPhone still shows a card | The message was composed before the setting changed. | Start a fresh message and paste the link again. |
| Desktop behavior differs | Web and desktop clients may expose different controls. | Check the current client version and confirm behavior on mobile. |
FAQ
Can I remove a thumbnail for only one WhatsApp message?
The documented WhatsApp control is global for links you send. A per-message thumbnail editor is not established by the available guidance.
Will recipients still be able to open the link?
Yes. Disabling previews removes the generated card; it does not remove the URL.
Does this block websites from seeing my IP address?
It prevents the link-preview fetch described by the setting. It does not provide general anonymity when you or a recipient later opens the website.
Why does WhatsApp show a picture when I paste a link?
WhatsApp normally fetches page metadata and displays a preview. Enable Disable link previews to stop that behavior for links you send.
Is the setting available on WhatsApp Web?
The authoritative instructions used here document Android and iPhone. Web and desktop availability and menu placement are version-dependent.
