How to Save a Full-Page Webpage Screenshot in Safari on Mac

Safari and macOS do not document a built-in scrolling screenshot. Choose print to PDF for a full-page record, or use a screenshot for visible screen content.

Safari on Mac does not document a built-in command for capturing a whole scrolling webpage as one screenshot image. For a saved file containing the page’s printable content, use Safari’s print workflow and save the result as a PDF. The PDF may span several pages; it is a print-layout document, not a single tall screenshot. If you need an image, macOS screenshot controls capture the screen, a window, or a selected area.

Choose the right kind of saved page

Method Output Use it for Limitation
Safari Print > Save as PDF Paginated PDF Sharing or keeping printable page content Print layout can differ from the website; inspect page breaks and missing content.
macOS screenshot controls Image of the display, a window, or a selection A visual record of content currently on screen Apple’s documented controls do not describe scrolling webpage capture.
Safari Web Archive Web Archive file Keeping page graphics and links for later Links still depend on destination pages being available, and some sites restrict saving.
Safari Page Source HTML source file Examining or reusing page source It is source code, not a visual capture.

Save a webpage as a PDF in Safari

  1. Open the webpage in Safari on your Mac and wait for the content you need to appear.
  2. Choose File > Print, or press Command-P.
  3. Review the print preview. Check whether the page’s important content appears and whether headings, tables, or images break awkwardly across pages.
  4. In the print dialog, open the PDF menu and choose Save as PDF.
  5. Name the file, choose a save location, and save it. Open the saved PDF to confirm the result.

Safari’s print route creates a document using the page’s print layout. Websites can use print-specific styling, omit interactive content, or paginate long pages differently from the browser view. If something is missing, check the preview and the saved file; a PDF is not guaranteed to reproduce every on-screen element.

Capture what is visible on screen

Use these macOS shortcuts when you need a conventional screenshot of visible content:

  • Shift-Command-3: capture the whole display.
  • Shift-Command-4: drag to select an area.
  • Shift-Command-4, then Space: move the camera to a window and click to capture it.
  • Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot app, where you can choose capture options and a save location.

These shortcuts capture the display or a selected region, not an automatically scrolling page. If the webpage extends below the visible browser area, a normal screen capture will not include the off-screen content. Screenshots are saved to the desktop by default unless you choose another location in Screenshot options. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple says SDR captures use PNG and HDR captures use HEIF.

Save a Web Archive or page source

When you want a reusable webpage file instead of an image or printable record, use Safari’s save options:

  1. Open the page and choose File > Save As.
  2. Choose Web Archive to save page graphics along with the page, or Page Source if you specifically want the HTML source.
  3. Name the file, choose a location, and save it.

A Web Archive is useful for later reference, but links in it rely on their destination pages remaining available. Page Source saves HTML only and does not preserve the rendered appearance. Apple also notes that some webpages may prevent saving items that appear on the page, so check the resulting archive.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo. One GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF, without setting up a local browser. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting

The PDF is missing content

Some sites restrict saving, and print styles may hide interactive or screen-only content. Check the print preview first. If the missing item is essential, a PDF may not be a faithful record of the rendered page; try a screen capture for what is visible or Safari’s Web Archive for a saved webpage copy.

The PDF breaks content across pages

That is pagination in the print layout. Inspect the preview before saving. If the result remains awkward, use a screenshot for a particular visible section or save a Web Archive if you need the page rather than a printable document.

The screenshot includes only part of the webpage

The built-in screenshot shortcuts capture the display, window, or selected area. They do not automatically scroll through the page. Use Print > Save as PDF for printable content from the full page.

The Web Archive does not preserve a linked destination

The archive can preserve page graphics and links, but the linked destination must remain available. Use the PDF workflow when you need a saved printable record of the page itself.

Reliability, performance, and file choice

For a one-off copy, Safari’s built-in print and save features avoid setting up another tool. The result depends on what the site exposes to printing and saving, so preview and verify the output. A screenshot records pixels currently shown; a PDF preserves printable layout across pages; a Web Archive retains a webpage package whose links can depend on the live destinations. Pick based on what you need to open or share later, rather than treating these formats as interchangeable.

FAQ

Does macOS have a built-in full-page scrolling screenshot shortcut?

Apple’s documented Screenshot controls cover the display, a window, or a selected area. They do not document a scrolling webpage capture command.

Is Save as PDF the same as a full-page screenshot?

No. It creates a paginated document through the print workflow. A screenshot is an image of visible screen content.

Should I choose Web Archive or Page Source?

Choose Web Archive to retain page graphics and links for later reference. Choose Page Source when you want HTML code rather than the rendered page.

Can every webpage be saved in Safari?

No. Some pages may prevent saving displayed items, and print output can omit content. Check the preview and resulting file.
