How to Save the Google Background Image

Save a Google background image on desktop, Android, or iPhone—and learn why homepage and Chrome New Tab backgrounds work differently.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20266 min read

The fastest way to save an image shown on a Google page is to use your device’s normal image-save command:

  • Computer: Right-click the image and choose Save image as.
  • Android: Touch and hold the image, then tap Download image.
  • iPhone or iPad: Touch and hold the image, then tap Save Image.

The Google homepage background setting and the Chrome New Tab background are separate features. If you mean a customized background rather than an image displayed in a page, use the section that matches your screen.

Save the image on a computer

  1. Open the page containing the image in Chrome.
  2. Move the pointer over the image.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Save image as.
  5. Choose a folder, change the filename if needed, and select Save.

Chrome normally saves downloads in your Downloads folder. Google lists Downloads folders as the default location on Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can change the folder or make Chrome ask where to save every file in Settings → Downloads. See Google Chrome Help’s computer download instructions.

If “Save image as” is missing

  • You may have right-clicked page space instead of the image. Move the pointer directly over the picture.
  • The picture may be a CSS background, canvas drawing, or protected viewer rather than a normal image element.
  • The page may block the context menu. Try opening the image in a new tab, using Chrome’s page information tools, or taking a screenshot for personal reference.
  • If the image is inside a slideshow or gallery, open the individual image before saving.

Save the image on Android

  1. Open the page in Chrome.
  2. Touch and hold the image.
  3. Tap Download image.
  4. Open the Downloads app or your file manager to find it.

Google documents the same touch-and-hold action for downloading images and links on Android. See Chrome Help’s download guidance.

Android troubleshooting

  • If you see Open image in new tab, open it first, then touch and hold the image again.
  • Check Chrome’s storage permission if the download fails.
  • Look in the Files app’s Downloads folder if the image does not appear in your gallery.
  • Some pages display a low-resolution preview. Open the original image before downloading when the page provides an Open image option.

Save the image on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the page in Chrome.
  2. Touch and hold the image.
  3. Tap Save Image.
  4. Open Photos to confirm the image was saved.

Depending on the available actions, Chrome may also show Save Image in…, which lets you save to Google Photos. See Google’s Chrome Help instructions for iPhone and iPad.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting

  • If Save Image is not listed, tap the image to open it by itself and try again.
  • Allow Photos access for Chrome in Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos.
  • Check the Photos app’s Recently Saved or Recents album.

When “Google background” means the Google homepage

Google’s homepage background control changes which image appears behind the search box. It is a selection setting, not a documented download command. To change it, Google says to sign in, choose Change background image, select an image source, and choose an image. The control does not promise a way to download the currently displayed background file. Read Google’s homepage background help for the available selection steps.

If you need a copy of the image, first try the normal save method on the visible image. If the background is implemented as a CSS background and cannot be saved directly, use a permitted screenshot or ask the image owner for the original file. Respect copyright and any terms attached to the image.

When “Google background” means Chrome’s New Tab page

Chrome’s desktop New Tab page has its own customization panel. Google says you can choose a theme, select Upload an image, or use a collection with daily refresh. This setting is separate from the Google homepage background.

  1. Open a new tab on your computer.
  2. Select Customize Chrome.
  3. Choose Change theme or Upload an image.
  4. Select the image or collection you want.

See Chrome’s New Tab customization help. If you uploaded the original image yourself, retrieve it from the folder where you stored it. Chrome’s customization panel is not a general-purpose export tool for downloading a gallery image.

Capture a background when the page will not let you save it

A screenshot can preserve what is visible when an image is rendered as a CSS background, canvas, or interactive gallery. For a one-off capture, use your operating system’s screenshot shortcut. For repeatable developer workflows, automate a browser capture and specify the viewport, device scale, and full-page behavior.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It can capture a full page or a selected element, apply a viewport and retina scale, wait for a selector or network idle, run custom JavaScript, and use custom CSS. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com -o google-background.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.google.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("google-background.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://www.google.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('google-background.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Options for a reliable capture

Need Setting or method
Only the background area Capture the element by CSS selector.
Everything below the fold Enable full-page capture and lazy-image loading.
Dark or light rendering Set dark mode or inject custom CSS.
Interactive background Click an element, run JavaScript, then capture.
Consistent layout Set a fixed viewport, device preset, timezone, and geolocation.
Repeated downloads Choose a cache TTL or use signed links for public image tags.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Downloaded file is HTML: You saved the page response instead of the image. Open the image itself, or verify the API response content type.
  • Image is blurry: Open the original asset or increase the capture viewport and retina scale.
  • Background changes each visit: Disable daily refresh or capture at a fixed time with a consistent browser configuration.
  • Consent dialog covers the image: Accept or remove the banner before capture; ScreenshotNeo handles known consent platforms automatically.
  • Capture times out: Wait for a specific selector or network idle, block unnecessary requests, and avoid an overly long full-page page.
  • API returns a bot check or blank page: Inspect X-Page-Verdict; failed and blocked results are not billed by ScreenshotNeo.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

For manual saving, the browser and device determine the file format and location. For automation, keep the viewport and wait condition stable, block ads and trackers when they are irrelevant, and cache repeated captures with a TTL. Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for large batches, or bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call. A cache hit does not count as a billed clean shot in ScreenshotNeo.

FAQ

Can I download the Google homepage background directly from Google’s background menu?

Google’s documented menu explains how to select or change a background. It does not document a download action for the currently displayed background.

Where does Chrome put saved images?

On computers, Chrome uses its configured download folder, usually Downloads. Android uses the Downloads area, and iPhone or iPad saves the image to Photos.

Is the Google homepage background the same as the New Tab background?

No. Google homepage customization and Chrome New Tab customization are separate settings.

What should I do if the image belongs to someone else?

Save it only when you have permission, and follow the image’s license or the site’s terms before reusing it.
