Save Page WE vs Firefox Pocket for Keeping Web Articles Offline

Save Page WE can save a local HTML snapshot; Pocket shut down in 2025. Here’s what each tool preserved and how to keep articles accessible now.

Short answer: Save Page WE is the option of these two for saving a web page to your computer for offline reading. It captures a page as displayed and saves it, with selected page resources, in a local HTML file. Firefox Pocket is no longer available: Mozilla shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025. So this is a comparison of a currently listed local-saving extension with a discontinued service, not two tools you can choose between today.

Use Save Page WE when you want a file you can open and manage locally, and you can accept that some pages will not archive completely. If you want an article-reading list synchronized through Pocket, that service is gone. Mozilla says Firefox Tab Groups and enhanced bookmarks can help manage reading lists, but they do not create offline HTML archives.

1. What is the difference between Save Page WE and Firefox Pocket?

Question Save Page WE Firefox Pocket
Available now? Listed in Mozilla Add-ons for Firefox and Chrome. No. Pocket services and apps were phased out; service ended July 8, 2025.
Where was the saved content? A local HTML file on your computer, which you can organize and back up. A Pocket account and its apps and services.
Offline access The local file is intended to open in a browser without revisiting the original site, subject to what was successfully captured. The Firefox Pocket list required an internet connection. Pocket apps previously offered offline access.
Reading experience A snapshot of the page as displayed, with resources selected by the save mode. It is not necessarily a clean article-only view. A clean, distraction-free reading view was a central part of the former service.
Best fit Keeping a local snapshot of a page. There is no current Pocket use case; former users need another way to keep or organize articles.

Mozilla Add-ons lists Save Page WE version 28.11 and says it was last updated March 31, 2023. That means the extension is currently listed, but the listing does not establish recent maintenance. Check the listing and permissions before installing it in a managed or sensitive browser environment. The extension requests access related to tabs and browsing activity, website data, downloads, and download history.

2. Save a web article offline with Save Page WE

  1. Install Save Page WE from the Firefox Add-ons listing or its Chrome listing.
  2. Open the article and let it finish rendering. If the article loads images or other content only as you scroll, scroll through it first so those resources have a chance to load.
  3. Choose the extension’s save action. You can save the current page, selected tabs, or a list of page URLs.
  4. Select a save mode. Basic, Standard, or Custom modes control which kinds of content and resources are included. Options cover rendered HTML, images, CSS, fonts, audio/video, and other resources, depending on the mode.
  5. Save the resulting HTML file in a folder you can find again. Open it in a browser while offline to check the copy, then back up the file if it matters.

The simplest workflow is clicking the toolbar button on the page you want. The extension also documents saving selected tabs and loading a URL list for multiple pages. For exact controls and current behavior, use the extension’s options page and its Mozilla Add-ons documentation.

Choosing what to save

  • Rendered HTML: preserves the page structure as currently displayed rather than promising to recreate every server-side behavior.
  • Images, CSS, and fonts: include the resources needed to reproduce more of the appearance. Omitting resources can make a smaller or less faithful file.
  • Audio, video, and other resources: inclusion depends on the save mode and whether the resource can be accessed and captured.
  • Custom mode: use when you need control over resource types. Verify the saved page, because excluding a dependency may alter how it looks or works.

A saved HTML file is useful for reference, but it is not a guarantee of a complete website archive. Cross-origin frames may not be saved, and scripts in cross-origin frames are not saved. Interactive content, authentication, content loaded later, or resources that the browser cannot access can also limit the result. Treat the file as a snapshot, not as a replacement for the live site or a preservation-grade archive.

3. What happened to Firefox Pocket?

Pocket was Mozilla’s read-it-later service. The Firefox workflow let a user save a page or video to a Pocket account, where Pocket presented supported pages in a clean reading view. Mozilla’s support documentation said that reading the Pocket list within Firefox required an internet connection; offline viewing was available through Pocket apps on other devices.

Mozilla announced the shutdown on May 22, 2025. Pocket services shut down on July 8, 2025, and the export period ended October 8, 2025. Those dates have passed. Mozilla’s current Pocket information says the web, Android, iOS, and macOS apps and Pocket browser extensions were phased out. A Pocket button or old support page should not be taken as evidence that the service still works.

Mozilla described the decision as a shift in where it would invest its resources as people’s needs evolve. The practical result for this comparison is simple: Pocket is historical context, not a working offline-saving choice.

4. Which should you use?

  • Choose Save Page WE if you specifically need a local HTML copy of a page for offline reference and are prepared to inspect it for missing content.
  • Do not choose Pocket for a new workflow. It has shut down, and its export window has closed.
  • If your priority is a reading queue, use a currently available bookmarking or read-later option after checking its current offline behavior and export options. Firefox Tab Groups and enhanced bookmarks are built-in ways Mozilla identifies for managing reading lists; they are not offline HTML archives.
  • If your priority is preserving a visual record, a screenshot can be useful alongside a saved page. It records appearance rather than preserving a navigable HTML page.

5. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a visual snapshot rather than a local HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo captures a webpage through one API request. It is not a replacement for an offline article file: use Save Page WE when you need the page stored as HTML. ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need a screenshot or PDF of how a page appears.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Example request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

6. Troubleshooting Save Page WE

Problem Likely cause What to try
The saved page is missing images or styling. The chosen save mode did not include a needed resource, or the resource was unavailable when saved. Try a mode that includes images, CSS, and fonts; reload the source, wait for it to render, and save again. Compare the offline result.
An embedded frame is blank or incomplete. Some cross-origin frames and scripts in those frames cannot be saved. Open the frame’s source page separately and save it if permitted. Do not assume the parent file includes it.
The page looks different offline. The page depends on dynamic scripts, external resources, or content that was not captured. Scroll to load content before saving, include relevant resource types, and keep the live URL as a reference.
A login-only article does not save correctly. Content may be gated, rendered dynamically, or unavailable to the extension at capture time. Save only content you are authorized to access. Ensure the article is visible and fully rendered before capture; verify the local file immediately.
There is no longer a Pocket save or sync option. Pocket shut down in 2025 and its browser integration was removed. Use a currently available local saving or bookmarking workflow. An old toolbar entry or support article does not restore Pocket service.

7. Reliability, performance, and cost

Reliability: Save Page WE creates a file you control, so access to that saved copy does not depend on Pocket remaining online. Its completeness still depends on the source page, selected resources, and browser access. Keep the original URL and, for important material, more than one backup.

Performance: the extension can save multiple selected tabs or a URL list, but pages with many large resources can take longer and produce larger files. Let lazy content load before capture. For batches, verify representative files instead of assuming every page rendered equally.

Cost: the cited Mozilla Add-ons listing does not identify a subscription price for Save Page WE. Pocket is discontinued, so it is not a service to buy or renew. No specialized hardware is required for the local HTML workflow.

Portability: an HTML file is easy to move and back up, but one file does not guarantee that every external resource or interactive behavior is preserved. Test files in the browsers and systems where you expect to read them.

8. Frequently asked questions

Can I still use Firefox Pocket?

No. Mozilla shut down Pocket services on July 8, 2025. Its announced export deadline, October 8, 2025, has also passed.

Does Save Page WE save an entire website?

It can save a page, selected tabs, or a list of page URLs. That is not the same as crawling and archiving an entire site.

Will the saved file work without internet?

It is designed to open locally in a browser. Offline appearance depends on whether required resources were captured; test the copy with the network disconnected.

Is a screenshot the same as an offline web page?

No. A screenshot preserves a visual image of a page. A saved HTML snapshot is intended to open as a page, though it may not retain all resources or interactions.

Can I recover my Pocket saves now?

Mozilla’s announced export period ended October 8, 2025. Check any copies or exports you already saved locally; the dossier does not establish a current recovery route.
