How to Save a Screenshot as a File on Mac

Save any Mac screenshot to a file, change its folder, choose capture modes, use shortcuts, troubleshoot missing files, and automate captures.

Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls. Choose the full-screen, window, or selected-area capture button, open Options > Save to, select a folder, and capture. macOS saves the screenshot as a file in that destination. Apple’s default shortcut destination is the Desktop.

Apple’s official guide covers these controls in Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac.

Save a screenshot with the Screenshot controls

  1. Press Shift-Command-5. You can also open Spotlight and search for Screenshot, or open it from Applications > Utilities.
  2. Choose one of the capture modes: capture the entire screen, capture a window, or capture a selected portion.
  3. Click Options.
  4. Under Save to, choose a preset location or select Other Location to browse to a folder.
  5. Click Capture or use the on-screen capture control.

A floating thumbnail appears briefly. Click it to crop, annotate, or mark up the image. If you do nothing, the file is saved automatically. You can also drag the thumbnail to another folder or application.

Use keyboard shortcuts for faster file captures

Shortcut Action Default result
Shift-Command-3 Capture the entire screen Saves a file, normally on the Desktop
Shift-Command-4 Select an area to capture Saves a file, normally on the Desktop
Shift-Command-4, then Space Capture a window Saves a file, normally on the Desktop

To copy the capture instead of creating a file, hold Control with the shortcut. For example, Control-Shift-Command-3 copies the whole screen to the Clipboard. A Clipboard image is not a saved file until you paste it into an app and save it.

Change where Mac screenshots are saved

  1. Press Shift-Command-5.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Choose a preset under Save to, such as Desktop, Documents, or Clipboard.
  4. Choose Other Location to select any folder you can access.

The selected destination remains the default for later captures until you change it again. If you use only the keyboard shortcuts and never changed this setting, check the Desktop first.

Find a screenshot that you already saved

  • Open Finder and check the Desktop, then the folder shown in Screenshot > Options > Save to.
  • Search Finder for Screenshot or Screen Shot. Names include the capture date and time, though wording can be localized.
  • Check the floating thumbnail. If it is still visible, click it to open the image or drag it into a folder.
  • If you used a Control-modified shortcut, look in the destination app’s paste history instead; that shortcut copied to the Clipboard.

Choose the image format

Apple’s general Mac documentation describes screenshots as PNG files. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot may offer an SDR (Most Compatible) option using PNG or an HDR option using HEIF. The HDR/HEIF choice is model and macOS dependent, so it may not appear on every Mac.

For a widely compatible file, use PNG. For an HDR workflow on supported hardware, choose the HDR option when it is offered.

Capture a full screen, window, or selection

Entire screen

Use Shift-Command-3 for the fastest full-screen file, or choose the entire-screen button in Screenshot controls when you need to set a destination first.

One window

Press Shift-Command-4, press Space, then click the window. The window capture includes its shadow by default.

Selected area

Press Shift-Command-4, drag over the area, and release. Hold Space while dragging to reposition the selection; hold Shift or Option to adjust one edge or corner as you refine it.

Use Preview as an alternative

Open Preview and choose File > Take Screenshot. Select the entire screen, a window, or a selection. Preview also provides markup tools, so this workflow can be useful when you are already editing or annotating a document.

Protected windows and capture limitations

Some applications prevent their windows from being captured. Apple lists Apple TV in its current support article and DVD Player in its Mac guide as examples. This is an application restriction, not necessarily a problem with your shortcut or Screenshot settings. If a protected window appears black or is missing, check whether the app permits screenshots or use an approved export function inside that app.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of web pages rather than your Mac desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. Its capture API can remove cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients can call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No file appears The screenshot was copied to the Clipboard Paste it into Preview or another image editor and save it, or remove Control from the shortcut.
The file is not on the Desktop A different Save to folder is selected Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and inspect the current destination.
The wrong area was captured The selection was released too early Press Shift-Command-4 again and drag a new selection.
A window is missing or black The application blocks screenshots Use the app’s export feature or check its screenshot permissions.
The thumbnail disappears The preview timeout elapsed Open the selected Save to folder in Finder; the file should already be saved.
The image format option is absent Your Mac or macOS version does not support that option Use the available PNG setting, which is the broadly compatible choice.

Performance, reliability, and file management

  • Use Shift-Command-3 when speed matters; use the Screenshot panel when destination control matters.
  • Save to a project folder rather than the Desktop when captures are part of documentation or QA work.
  • PNG preserves sharp text and interface details but can create larger files than compressed formats.
  • Clipboard captures avoid creating temporary files, but they are easier to lose if you copy something else before pasting.
  • For repeatable web captures, an API avoids keeping a browser window open and can apply waits, device settings, blocking rules, and caching consistently.

FAQ

What is the quickest way to save a full-screen screenshot?

Press Shift-Command-3. Unless you changed the destination, macOS saves the file on the Desktop.

How do I save a screenshot directly into a folder?

Open Shift-Command-5, choose Options, select Save to > Other Location, and pick the folder before capturing.

Does Control-Shift-Command-3 save a file?

No. It copies the full-screen image to the Clipboard. Paste it into an app and save it to create a file.

Can every Mac save screenshots as HEIF?

No. Apple limits the HDR/HEIF option to supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later.

Can I capture a website without taking a picture of my desktop?

Yes. A service such as ScreenshotNeo can render a URL directly to PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF through its API.
