How to Save a Web Page in Safari on iPhone
Save a Safari page for offline reading with Reading List, or keep a named PDF file using Markup and Save to Files.
To save a web page in Safari on iPhone, choose one of two methods: use Add to Reading List when you want to return to the page in Safari, or use Markup and Save to Files when you need a named PDF document.
Safari may show the controls slightly differently depending on your tab layout. Look for either the Page Menu button followed by Share, or a visible Share button at the top or bottom of the screen.
Save a page to Safari Reading List
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Tap the Share button. If you see the Page Menu first, tap it, then tap Share.
- Scroll through the share options and tap Add to Reading List.
- Safari adds the page to your Reading List. Open Safari’s sidebar or bookmarks area later and select Reading List to find it.
Reading List is the right choice when you want to revisit the webpage through Safari. Apple says Reading List items can be read without an internet connection when they are saved for offline access. Apple’s Reading List guide documents this behavior.
Turn on automatic offline saving
Adding an item to Reading List and saving it for offline reading are separate controls. To have Safari automatically download Reading List items:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Under Reading List, turn on Automatically Save Offline.
With this setting enabled, Safari attempts to keep Reading List pages available when you are offline. Pages that depend on live data, an account session, or unavailable resources may not behave exactly like the online version.
Add a link without opening it
You can save a linked page directly from another webpage:
- Touch and hold the link.
- Tap Add to Reading List.
This is useful when you are scanning an index, search results page, or article and want to collect several pages before reading them. Apple documents this shortcut in its Safari Reading List instructions.
Save a Safari webpage as a PDF file
Use the PDF workflow when you need a durable file with a name and a location, or when you want to mark up the page before saving it.
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Tap Share. If your layout shows the Page Menu, open it first and then choose Share.
- Tap Markup.
- Use the markup tools if you want to draw, highlight, or annotate the page.
- Tap Done, then choose Save File To.
- Choose a folder in Files, enter a filename, and tap Save.
This creates a named PDF in the location you select instead of adding an entry to Safari’s Reading List. See Apple’s guide to annotating and saving a webpage as a PDF for the documented sequence.
Choose the right method
| What you need | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Return to the page in Safari | Add to Reading List | A Safari Reading List item; offline availability is controlled by Safari’s offline setting. |
| Keep a named copy | Markup → Save File To | A PDF saved in a Files folder. |
| Annotate before keeping it | Markup → Save File To | An annotated PDF file. |
| Save a link while browsing another page | Touch and hold the link → Add to Reading List | The linked page is added without opening it first. |
Common problems and fixes
“Add to Reading List” is missing
Open the Share sheet and scroll through all actions. If you still cannot find it, tap Edit Actions (when available) and add the Reading List action. You can also touch and hold a link and look for Add to Reading List in the contextual menu.
The Share button is not where the instructions show it
Safari’s controls vary with the top or bottom tab layout. Check both the Page Menu and the direct Share button. The action names remain Share, Add to Reading List, and Markup even when their positions change.
The page is in Reading List but will not open offline
Confirm Settings → Apps → Safari → Automatically Save Offline is enabled and allow Safari time to download the page while you are connected. Pages that require a live connection, authentication, or scripts that are unavailable offline may not work fully without internet access.
“Save File To” does not appear
Make sure you entered the PDF flow by tapping Markup from Safari’s Share menu. Then tap Done; the save destination appears after the markup step. If you only use the normal Share sheet, you may not see the PDF save controls.
The PDF looks different from the live page
A PDF is a fixed document representation. Interactive controls, videos, live data, and some page layouts may not carry over. For a page you plan to revisit interactively, Reading List is usually a better fit.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot or PDF of a page for a workflow, script, or AI agent, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ

No. Reading List stores a Safari item for later reading. Use Markup and Save File To when you need a PDF file.
Can I save a webpage without opening it?
Yes. Touch and hold a link and tap Add to Reading List.
Where does Safari save the PDF?
You choose the destination after tapping Save File To, such as a folder in the Files app or an available cloud storage location.
Will Reading List always work without internet?
Offline reading depends on Safari saving the page and on the page’s resources being available offline. Turn on Automatically Save Offline for the best chance of access without a connection.
