How to save a webpage as one HTML file with Save Page WE in Chrome

Save the page shown in Chrome as a single HTML file with Save Page WE. Choose a save mode, handle common failures, and learn what the saved file includes.

To save the webpage currently displayed in Chrome as one HTML file, install and open Save Page WE, then click its toolbar button, use the page’s right-click Save Page WE menu, or press Alt+A. The extension saves a representation of the page as it is currently displayed; the default filename extension is .html. The result is a single file you can open in a browser, not a guarantee that every server-side feature or behavior has been archived.

Save the current page

  1. Open the page in Chrome and wait until it displays the content you want to keep. If the site loads content as you scroll, bring the relevant content into view before saving.
  2. Start the save using one of the documented methods:
    • Toolbar: click the Save Page WE icon in Chrome’s toolbar.
    • Context menu: right-click the webpage, open the Save Page WE submenu, and choose a save command.
    • Keyboard: press Alt+A.
  3. Choose a save command or mode if prompted, then save the resulting file. The extension’s default file extension is .html.
  4. Open the saved file in a browser to check that the content you needed is present.

The toolbar action can be configured for selected tabs or a list of URLs. For a normal one-page save, the current-page command is the straightforward choice.

Choose Basic, Standard, or Custom

Save Page WE lists three item choices. The available listing describes their relationship, but does not provide a complete resource-by-resource inventory for each preset. Check the extension’s options for the exact items enabled in your version rather than assuming a particular CSS, image, font, script, or media inclusion rule.

Mode What the listing says When to consider it
Basic Items The basic set of items. When you want the basic save configuration.
Standard Items Includes Basic Items plus some additional items. When the basic result is missing something and you want the broader preset.
Custom Items Combines Basic Items with items selected from a list. When you want to choose which additional items to include.

These modes affect what is saved into the file. They do not turn a saved page into a complete copy of a website or reproduce server-side interactions.

Save multiple pages

Save Page WE supports saving multiple pages through selected tabs or a URL list:

  1. For open tabs, select the tabs you want to save and use Save Selected Tabs.
  2. For a list of pages, load a file containing URLs through the extension’s options and choose Save Listed URLs.
  3. When the load-lazy-content option is enabled for a multi-page save, tabs are brought to the foreground during saving.

Use Alt+C to cancel a single-page or multiple-page save.

When Save Page WE cannot save a page

The extension listing notes that its old save method may fail on some pages in Chrome 84 or later; it gives Yahoo as an example. The listing says a newer save method can save more pages. If a save fails:

  1. Open Save Page WE’s options and look for the newer save method.
  2. Try that method and save the page again.
  3. If the page still fails, treat the page as unsupported by your current setup; the listing does not promise that changing methods fixes every failure.

The extension listing also says the old method is the default, remembers the last save location, and cannot save some pages in Chrome 84 or later. These are compatibility notes from the listing, not a guarantee about every current Chrome version or site.

What a single HTML file can and cannot preserve

Save Page WE describes its purpose as saving a webpage “as currently displayed” into one HTML file that can be opened in a browser. Think of the result as a saved representation of the displayed page. The available source information does not establish an exhaustive list of resource types included in each mode, nor does it establish that interactive features, live data, authenticated server behavior, or every dynamically loaded item will continue to work offline.

For the most useful archive, prepare the page first: load the content you need, choose the appropriate save mode, and inspect the saved file. If a particular asset or interaction matters, verify it in the resulting document instead of assuming it was captured.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The toolbar icon does not start the save. The toolbar action may be configured for selected tabs or listed URLs. Use the page context menu or Alt+A, or review the toolbar action setting in the extension options.
The page will not save with the old method. The extension listing warns that the old method cannot save some pages in Chrome 84 or later. Try the newer save method in the extension options. It can save more pages, but is not guaranteed to fix every failure.
The saved page is missing content you expected. The page may not have displayed or loaded that content when saved, or the selected item mode may not include what you expected. Load and display the required content before saving; review the mode and its item choices in the options; inspect the output.
You cannot find the saved file. The save location may be unfamiliar. The listing says the old method remembers the last save location. Check the location shown during the save and the destination used by your browser or extension.
The multi-page save is taking too long or is saving unwanted tabs. The selected-tab set or URL list may include more pages than intended. Review the selected tabs or URL file before starting, and use Alt+C to cancel an active save.

Reliability, performance, and cost

Save Page WE’s source listing documents the save methods, modes, multi-page options, and compatibility caveat, but it does not provide performance benchmarks, a reliability percentage, or a complete privacy and data-handling description. Save only the page state you need and verify the output, particularly when the page is dynamic or the archive matters.

The listing describes the extension workflow and does not state a required paid plan or per-save price. Check the current extension listing and options for current availability and version-specific details.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF through an API, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For this task, it creates a screenshot rather than the single HTML archive produced by Save Page WE.

cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Equivalent Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

FAQ

Does the saved file have to end in .html?

The listing says .html is the default extension. It does not establish whether every save dialog or configuration requires that extension.

Can I open the saved file in another browser?

Save Page WE describes the resulting single HTML file as openable in any browser. Check the output in the browser and environment where you intend to use it.

Can I cancel a save?

Yes. The documented shortcut for canceling a single or multiple-page save is Alt+C.

Does this save every page on the website?

No. The documented workflow saves the page currently displayed, or the tabs or URLs you explicitly submit for a multiple-page save. It is not described as a whole-site crawler.
