How to Save a Website Screenshot as JPEG instead of PNG on Windows

Capture a webpage on Windows 10 or 11, save it as a real JPEG in Paint, and check when PNG is the better choice.

On Windows 10 or 11, capture the webpage with Snipping Tool, open the capture in Paint, and choose JPEG or JPG in the editor’s image-format choices when saving. Check that the saved file ends in .jpg or .jpeg. Changing a PNG filename extension by itself does not convert the image.

Save a webpage screenshot as JPEG with Snipping Tool and Paint

  1. Open the website and arrange the page as you want it to appear. Scroll to the relevant content and close any menus or dialogs that should not be included.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Windows screenshot overlay.
  3. Choose a capture mode and take the screenshot. Snipping Tool offers rectangle, window, full-screen, and freeform captures. A rectangular selection is useful when you want only part of the webpage; use full screen to capture the visible desktop screen.
  4. Open the capture in Snipping Tool. Choose Edit > Edit with Paint.
  5. In Paint, open the save or Save As format choices. Choose JPEG or JPG if that format is available in your installation. Choose a destination and save with a new filename so the original capture remains available.
  6. Verify the saved file’s extension in File Explorer. If extensions are hidden, select View > Show > File name extensions. Confirm the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg.

Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool shortcut and the Paint handoff for Windows 10 and 11. Paint’s exact controls and available formats can vary by installation, so use the image-format choice shown in your editor rather than relying on a particular menu label. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover the capture and handoff.

JPEG or PNG: which format should you use?

Consideration JPEG PNG
Best fit Colorful pictures and photographic content Graphics where sharp edges, text, or transparency matter
Transparency Does not preserve transparent areas as PNG does Can preserve transparent parts
Screenshot tradeoff May show softness or artifacts around small text and crisp interface edges Often a better choice when you need the original graphic detail
File size Can be smaller for some images, but the result depends on the image and save settings Can be larger or smaller depending on image content and settings

JPEG is a lossy format. For a webpage screenshot dominated by text, icons, and straight interface edges, inspect the JPEG at its intended size before deleting the PNG original. If letters look soft or have visible artifacts, keep or use the PNG. Microsoft describes JPEG as suitable for pictures with many colors and notes that PNG supports transparency and can improve graphic quality; it does not publish a size or quality estimate for this particular screenshot workflow. Microsoft’s image-format guidance explains these general differences.

Verify that the image was converted

  • Check the full extension: .jpg and .jpeg are JPEG file extensions; .png is PNG.
  • Do not rename capture.png to capture.jpg in File Explorer and assume it converted. Renaming changes the filename, not the image encoding.
  • If you cannot see extensions, turn on File name extensions in File Explorer using View > Show.
  • Open the resulting file. If it fails to open or still appears as PNG in an image editor, repeat the save using the editor’s JPEG format option.

Microsoft lists the common JPEG and PNG extensions and the File Explorer setting for showing extensions in its file extension reference.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
The file is still PNG after I changed its name An extension rename does not re-encode the image. Open the original in Paint and save a new copy using the JPEG/JPG format choice.
I do not see JPEG or JPG in the save choices The available controls or formats may differ in that Paint installation. Check the editor’s save-format choices. If JPEG is unavailable, use an image editor that offers JPEG export; retain the PNG original until conversion is confirmed.
The JPEG looks blurry or has odd blocks around text JPEG compression can affect sharp edges and small lettering. Use the PNG capture for text-heavy pages, or compare the JPEG at its intended display size before deciding which copy to keep.
The screenshot misses part of the webpage Snipping Tool captures a screen area or screen, rather than automatically scrolling through a long page. For a standard capture, scroll to the section you need and capture it in parts. For automated full-page capture, use a browser-based or API workflow designed for full-page screenshots.
The extension is not visible in File Explorer File name extensions are hidden. Turn on View > Show > File name extensions.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a webpage screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. The API accepts a URL and an access key; check the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and configuration.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const bytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', bytes));

These examples use WebP filenames as supplied for the standard request. To request JPEG output, use the format option documented by ScreenshotNeo and save the response with a matching .jpg or .jpeg extension. The response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed; only clean shots are billed, while bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each cleanup step can be disabled. AI agents can use its MCP server tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; all features are available on every plan. Sign up for free ScreenshotNeo screenshots.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPG different from JPEG?

They are two common filename extensions for JPEG images. Either extension is suitable when the image was actually saved in JPEG format.

Can Snipping Tool save directly as JPEG?

The documented workflow opens a capture in Snipping Tool and lets you hand it to Paint. Save through an editor’s JPEG/JPG format choice where available; exact Paint controls may differ across Windows installations.

Will converting a screenshot to JPEG make the text clearer?

No. JPEG is lossy, and small text or sharp UI edges may look softer. Keep PNG when fidelity or transparency matters more.

Does this capture an entire long webpage?

The Windows snip captures the selected area or screen. A long page may require multiple captures or a tool that supports full-page capture.
