How to Schedule Screenshots of Indian University Admission Pages

Schedule captures of official Indian university admission pages, detect revised notices, and keep a reliable record with a hosted monitor or your own browser script.

To schedule screenshots of Indian university admission pages, choose the official university or counselling authority URL, then use either a hosted website monitor or a browser automation script that runs on a schedule. Decide first whether you need an image from every check or only an alert when the page changes. Those are different record-keeping needs.

Admission schedules are cycle-specific and can be revised. Check dates against the live official portal before acting on them. Examples of official portals include JoSAA, NIFT admissions, and GGSIPU; these are examples, not a complete directory of Indian institutions. JoSAA describes its remit as joint seat allocation for 138 institutes for academic year 2026–27, not as representing every Indian university. JoSAA

1. Choose the page and the record you need

Start at the authority responsible for the admission process. That may be a university, a national or state counselling authority, or a specific admissions portal. Prefer the official schedule, notices, or counselling page over a search result or a third-party summary.

  1. Open the official admissions site and identify the page that publishes schedules, notices, or counselling updates.
  2. Copy the stable URL. If the authority links to a PDF notice, decide whether you need to monitor the listing page, the PDF itself, or both.
  3. Record what evidence you need: a screenshot on every run, a change alert, or both.
  4. Choose the page area to monitor. A page-wide capture is simplest; a region around the schedule or notices may reduce irrelevant changes if your monitor supports it.
  5. Confirm that the service retains screenshots for the required period and lets you export them if you need an audit archive.

Do not assume an alerting service preserves a complete image for every scheduled check. Retention, export, and notification behavior can vary by service and plan, so verify those details before depending on the archive.

2. Option A: use a hosted website monitor

A hosted monitor is usually the quickest path when you want recurring checks without maintaining a browser process. For example, Visualping documents scheduled cloud monitoring, visual comparisons, and alerts, and says its cloud monitors continue while your browser or computer is off. Distill documents interval-based and cron-style recurring checks. These are vendor-described capabilities; compare the current service and plan details directly.

  1. Create a monitor for the official admission schedule or notices URL.
  2. Select the full page or the schedule/notices region, if region selection is available.
  3. Set the check frequency and, where supported, the exact time or recurring schedule.
  4. Configure alerts for changes that require review. Keep in mind that animations, rotating banners, timestamps, and unrelated page updates can also trigger differences.
  5. Check the service’s history, screenshot retention, export options, and alert channels. Confirm explicitly whether every check saves an image or only detected changes are retained.
  6. Run an initial check and confirm that the captured page includes the actual schedule, any linked notice, and the date or revision details needed for comparison.

Use the highest check frequency that is useful for the admissions process and allowed by the service. A very frequent schedule creates more checks to review and may consume a plan allowance without making a slowly updated notice more actionable.

3. Option B: run Playwright on your own schedule

A DIY workflow has two independent parts: Playwright loads and captures the page, while an external scheduler launches the script and a storage process keeps screenshots and run logs. Playwright’s screenshot documentation covers page screenshots and visual comparisons; it does not provide the recurring scheduler itself.

Install Playwright

mkdir admission-monitor
cd admission-monitor
npm init -y
npm install --save-dev playwright
npx playwright install chromium

Create a scheduled capture script

Save this as capture.mjs. It creates a dated PNG for each run, prints the capture time and page title, and writes a separate error log if loading or capture fails. Set ADMISSION_URL to the official page you verified.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { mkdir, appendFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';

const url = process.env.ADMISSION_URL;
if (!url) throw new Error('Set ADMISSION_URL to the official admissions page URL');

const outputDir = process.env.SCREENSHOT_DIR ?? './screenshots';
const timeoutMs = Number(process.env.NAVIGATION_TIMEOUT_MS ?? 45000);
const timestamp = new Date().toISOString().replaceAll(':', '-');
const outputPath = path.join(outputDir, `admission-${timestamp}.png`);

await mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });

try {
  const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: timeoutMs });
  if (!response) throw new Error('Navigation returned no main-document response');
  if (!response.ok()) throw new Error(`Main document returned HTTP ${response.status()}`);

  // Allow client-rendered notices a short opportunity to appear.
  await page.waitForTimeout(1500);
  await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true });
  console.log(JSON.stringify({ capturedAt: new Date().toISOString(), url, title: await page.title(), status: response.status(), screenshot: outputPath }));
} catch (error) {
  const line = JSON.stringify({ failedAt: new Date().toISOString(), url, error: String(error) });
  await appendFile(path.join(outputDir, 'errors.jsonl'), `${line}\n`);
  console.error(line);
  process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

The script intentionally saves each successful capture instead of comparing images or sending alerts. Add a comparison and notification step only if you need it, and decide how to handle false positives such as rotating content or a changing banner. Keep the screenshot directory on persistent storage: a temporary runner filesystem may be erased after a job.

Schedule it with cron on a Linux host

For a run every six hours, install the project on a machine or server that stays available, then add a cron entry. Replace the paths and URL with your values.

0 */6 * * * cd /opt/admission-monitor && ADMISSION_URL='https://example.edu/admissions/schedule' SCREENSHOT_DIR='/var/lib/admission-monitor/screenshots' /usr/bin/node capture.mjs >> /var/log/admission-monitor.log 2>&1

Check the installed Node path with command -v node. Cron has a limited environment, so use absolute paths and do not rely on shell startup files to set variables. To choose a different cadence, change the cron expression and confirm its timezone; cron commonly follows the host’s configured timezone.

Schedule it with Task Scheduler on Windows

  1. Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Basic Task.
  2. Set a trigger such as daily, then use the task’s advanced trigger settings for the desired repetition interval.
  3. Set the action to start a program: use the full path to node.exe.
  4. Set the arguments to the full path to capture.mjs, and set ADMISSION_URL and SCREENSHOT_DIR in the task environment or a wrapper script.
  5. Set the working directory to the project folder, enable run-on-missed-start if appropriate, and review the task’s last-run result after its first scheduled execution.

For a Linux cron scheduler, an isolated capture script, or another scheduler you control, the same pattern applies: persist output, log failures, and monitor the scheduler itself so a stopped job is not mistaken for an unchanged admissions page.

4. Capture and monitoring choices

Choice When it helps What to verify
Full page or selected region Full page is easy to set up; a region can focus review on the schedule Whether the page is longer than the viewport, and whether the region selector remains stable
Every-run archive or change-only alerts Archive supports a chronological record; alerts reduce routine review Whether every check stores an image, retention period, export, and alert delivery
Hosted monitor or DIY automation Hosted service reduces infrastructure work; DIY gives control over capture and storage Whether runs continue when your computer is off; who maintains browser, scheduler, and storage
Page screenshot or PDF notice capture Screenshot records the rendered page; PDF capture can preserve a linked official document Whether the PDF URL is stable and whether a new notice replaces or adds to old ones

5. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API also supports full-page captures, CSS element capture, device and viewport settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, caching, async jobs, and bulk capture. See the API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://josaa.nic.in/ -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://josaa.nic.in/"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://josaa.nic.in/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);
  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers indicating the outcome.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
  • The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan.

API captures are individual requests; for a recurring archive, invoke the call from your scheduler and store each returned file with a timestamp. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

6. Reliability, performance, and cost

  • Reliability: A screenshot proves what the browser rendered at a time; it does not prove that the page was authoritative, complete, or unchanged elsewhere. Keep the source URL and run timestamp with each image, and inspect linked notices separately.
  • Missed runs: A laptop-based scheduler stops when the laptop sleeps or loses connectivity. Hosted cloud monitoring can run without your local browser depending on the service. For DIY, use a persistent machine or job runner and review run logs.
  • Rendering: Client-rendered pages may need a short wait after navigation. A fixed delay can still miss slow content; waiting for a specific schedule element is preferable when the selector is stable. Full-page screenshots can be large and take longer than viewport captures.
  • Storage: Screenshots accumulate. Set a retention policy, back up records needed for an admissions audit, and consider storing a checksum or run manifest alongside files. These are local workflow choices, not guarantees supplied by a scheduler.
  • Cost: Hosted monitors may charge by monitors, checks, or plan limits; verify current terms. DIY shifts cost to compute, persistent storage, and maintenance. ScreenshotNeo’s listed monthly tiers are Free: 1,000, Starter: $5 for 3,000, Growth: $15 for 15,000, Pro: $39 for 60,000, Scale: $99 for 250,000, and Business: $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free.
  • Request load: Avoid needlessly frequent checks against an admissions portal. Select a reasonable interval, and respect any access guidance the site publishes.

7. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Screenshot is blank or missing the schedule Content rendered after navigation, blocked script, or wrong URL Verify the official URL in a normal browser; wait for the schedule element or increase the post-navigation wait; inspect the run log.
Navigation timeout Slow server, heavy page, network issue, or page that never reaches the selected load state Use a reasonable longer timeout; consider waiting for DOM content and then the target content instead of waiting for every network request to stop.
HTTP error or unexpected redirect Outdated link, session requirement, or temporary server response Open the final URL manually, update the monitored URL to the official destination, and retain the status code in logs.
Cookie or consent banner obscures content The banner appears before the relevant section For DIY capture, handle the consent prompt only as a visitor would and confirm the resulting page. ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners before capture.
Frequent false change alerts Rotating banners, clocks, ads, or changing page elements outside the schedule Monitor the relevant region if supported, exclude volatile areas where possible, or review the changed image before treating it as an admission update.
No image from a scheduled run Scheduler not running, wrong working directory, missing environment variable, or non-persistent output path Inspect the scheduler’s last-run status and logs; use absolute paths; set variables in the scheduled task; write to persistent storage.
Duplicate filenames or overwritten captures Timestamp precision or fixed output name is insufficient Use unique run timestamps or a scheduler-provided run ID and confirm the file exists before recording success.
Capture works locally but fails on the server Missing browser binaries, restricted network, or different runtime environment Install the Playwright browser for the deployed user, confirm outbound access to the portal, and run the script under the same account as the scheduler.

8. FAQ

Should I monitor a university page or a counselling portal?

Monitor the authority that publishes the schedule relevant to the applicant. For a centralized allocation process, that may be the counselling authority; for institution-specific dates, use the institution’s admissions portal.

Can I use a screenshot as proof of an admission deadline?

Keep it as a dated record, but verify the deadline on the live official portal before making a decision. A screenshot can be stale or omit a linked notice.

Will a change monitor save every scheduled screenshot?

Not necessarily. Confirm the specific service’s per-run capture history, retention, and export behavior before relying on it as an archive.

How often should I check?

There is no universal interval. Choose a cadence that gives useful notice for the admissions cycle, stays within the service’s limits, and does not create needless requests or review work.
