How to Scrape Bloomberg Articles: Latest Financial News With Node.js

Bloomberg’s terms require prior written consent for automated access. Learn the authorized data routes, what to confirm, and how to build a Node.js client safely.

If you want Bloomberg article text, do not start by scraping Bloomberg.com. Bloomberg’s terms prohibit automated access to its service without prior express written consent. A Bloomberg account, or the ability to read a story in a browser, does not by itself grant permission to extract, store, or republish its contents. For a news-data project, first confirm an authorized product and the rights attached to your contract.

This guide explains the authorized routes Bloomberg documents and shows a Node.js pattern for calling an API endpoint only after Bloomberg has supplied access details and credentials. The available public sources do not specify a general-purpose Bloomberg news endpoint, so the example uses an endpoint and fields supplied for your own authorized integration; it is not a working Bloomberg article scraper.

1. Check permission and choose the right Bloomberg route

Bloomberg’s Terms of Service state that automated methods such as scrapers, bots, spiders, and data-mining tools may not access, acquire, copy, or monitor Bloomberg service content without prior express written consent. The terms also restrict copying, creating databases from, storing, and redistributing service content. They allow links to publicly accessible Bloomberg pages, subject to the terms; linking does not authorize extracting article text.

Bloomberg’s Web API Connectivity Policy describes authenticated APIs and requirements that include credentials, request authentication, OAuth2 flows, and registered IP addresses. API access is product- and entitlement-specific, and Bloomberg may suspend accounts for policy violations. Having API credentials does not automatically authorize every dataset or use.

Need Route to investigate What to confirm
Licensed Bloomberg news data Bloomberg Data License Whether your agreement includes the specific news fields or article text you need, delivery method, retention, display, and redistribution rights.
Real-time, historical, or reference data in client-server applications Bloomberg Server API (SAPI) Whether the product covers your use case. Bloomberg’s cited SAPI description does not establish that it supplies article text.
Bloomberg Open API in an authorized environment Bloomberg’s maintained blpapi-node binding That your entitlement and installed Open API environment apply. This is an API client, not a Bloomberg.com scraper.
Readers only need to find the story Link to the publicly accessible Bloomberg page Linking is different from copying article text or building a database from it.

Data License and SAPI are not interchangeable. Bloomberg lists News among Data License categories and describes delivery via REST API, SFTP, web services, or cloud providers. That public product page does not establish that your contract includes full article bodies or a particular downstream use. Ask Bloomberg to confirm coverage and rights before you build around those assumptions.

2. Get the API details and entitlements before coding

  1. Write down the exact fields you need: for example, headlines, timestamps, story identifiers, or full text. Avoid requesting or retaining fields your product does not need.
  2. Describe how the data will be displayed, stored, searched, summarized, or shared. Ask Bloomberg which of those uses your agreement permits.
  3. Ask for the applicable product, delivery method, endpoint or SDK documentation, authentication flow, network requirements, and entitlement setup. The Bloomberg developer portal’s technical resources require sign-in.
  4. Confirm whether your application host’s outbound IP address must be registered and how credentials or tokens should be issued and renewed.
  5. Check storage duration, caching, audit, and redistribution restrictions with your contract owner. Enforce those rules in your application.
  6. Keep a record of the approved endpoint, fields, and permitted use. If the terms or product documentation change, review the integration before expanding it.

3. Node.js client pattern for an authorized endpoint

The public sources in this research do not provide a verified Bloomberg News API URL, request schema, or Node.js example for fetching article text. The following Node.js 20+ script is a runnable HTTP client pattern for an endpoint your Bloomberg agreement and technical documentation authorize. Supply the endpoint and token through environment variables, and adjust the response handling to the documented schema. It intentionally does not target Bloomberg.com article pages.

// save as authorized-news.mjs
// Run with: NEWS_API_URL='https://your-authorized-api.example/resource' \
//           NEWS_API_TOKEN='your-token' node authorized-news.mjs

const endpoint = process.env.NEWS_API_URL;
const token = process.env.NEWS_API_TOKEN;

if (!endpoint || !token) {
  console.error('Set NEWS_API_URL and NEWS_API_TOKEN using your provider documentation.');
  process.exit(1);
}

let url;
try {
  url = new URL(endpoint);
} catch {
  console.error('NEWS_API_URL must be a valid absolute URL.');
  process.exit(1);
}

if (url.protocol !== 'https:') {
  console.error('Use HTTPS for the authorized API endpoint.');
  process.exit(1);
}

const controller = new AbortController();
const timeout = setTimeout(() => controller.abort(), 30_000);

try {
  const response = await fetch(url, {
    method: 'GET',
    headers: {
      authorization: `Bearer ${token}`,
      accept: 'application/json',
    },
    signal: controller.signal,
  });

  if (!response.ok) {
    const detail = (await response.text()).slice(0, 1000);
    console.error(`Authorized API returned HTTP ${response.status}: ${detail}`);
    process.exitCode = 1;
  } else {
    const contentType = response.headers.get('content-type') || '';
    if (!contentType.includes('application/json')) {
      console.error(`Expected JSON, received ${contentType || 'unknown content type'}.`);
      process.exitCode = 1;
    } else {
      const data = await response.json();
      // Inspect only fields your agreement permits you to access and retain.
      console.log(JSON.stringify(data, null, 2));
    }
  }
} catch (error) {
  if (error.name === 'AbortError') {
    console.error('Request timed out. Check the endpoint and network requirements.');
  } else {
    console.error(`Request failed: ${error.message}`);
  }
  process.exitCode = 1;
} finally {
  clearTimeout(timeout);
}

This example assumes the provider’s documentation authorizes Bearer-token authentication for that endpoint. Bloomberg’s Web API policy describes multiple authentication approaches; use the one specified for your product rather than assuming this example’s header is applicable. Do not put a token in source control or log it. For an OAuth2 flow, obtain and refresh tokens according to the official instructions, and follow any registered-IP requirement.

cURL request pattern

curl --fail-with-body --silent --show-error \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $NEWS_API_TOKEN" \
  --header "Accept: application/json" \
  "$NEWS_API_URL"

Set NEWS_API_URL and NEWS_API_TOKEN only to values supplied for your authorized API. This generic request is not a Bloomberg endpoint or a substitute for Bloomberg’s authentication instructions.

Python request pattern

import os
import requests

endpoint = os.environ["NEWS_API_URL"]
token = os.environ["NEWS_API_TOKEN"]

response = requests.get(
    endpoint,
    headers={
        "Authorization": f"Bearer {token}",
        "Accept": "application/json",
    },
    timeout=(5, 30),
)
response.raise_for_status()

if "application/json" not in response.headers.get("content-type", ""):
    raise ValueError("Expected a JSON response from the authorized endpoint")

payload = response.json()
# Access and retain only fields your agreement permits.
print(payload)

4. Handle data, credentials, and failures carefully

Authentication and network setup

  • Use the authentication mechanism documented for the specific Bloomberg product. Do not assume that a web login cookie can authenticate an API request.
  • Store secrets in a deployment secret manager or protected environment variables. Rotate or revoke exposed credentials promptly.
  • If Bloomberg requires registered IP addresses, make outbound traffic originate from the registered address. A local laptop, serverless function, and production host may have different network paths.
  • Handle authorization errors as configuration or entitlement failures first. Do not try browser sessions, alternate identities, or other workarounds.

Retention and redistribution

Do not assume that receiving a field permits keeping it indefinitely, indexing it, using it to train a model, displaying it to every user, or redistributing it. Apply the storage and display rules in your agreement. If you only need a pointer to a story, use a permitted link rather than copying its text.

Reliability and performance

  • Set finite connection and response timeouts, as in the examples. A timeout should fail the request cleanly rather than leave a worker occupied indefinitely.
  • Use bounded concurrency and any rate limits or quotas in your product documentation. Do not fan out requests against Bloomberg.com pages.
  • Retry only transient failures, with a small attempt limit and exponential backoff with jitter. Avoid retrying authentication, entitlement, or validation errors.
  • Make writes idempotent where the API supports stable identifiers. Keep only the minimal permitted data needed for the application.
  • Record status codes, latency, and request identifiers when available, but redact authorization headers and article content from logs.
  • Estimate cost and capacity from your Bloomberg agreement, licensed volume, and delivery method. Public product pages do not determine your contract price, quota, or article-text entitlement.

5. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
HTTP 401 Missing, expired, malformed, or wrong-product credentials. Check the authentication flow for the selected API, refresh credentials as documented, and verify the account is entitled.
HTTP 403 The identity lacks entitlement, the requested field is not licensed, or a network policy such as registered IPs is unmet. Confirm product and field entitlements with Bloomberg and check the request’s origin against connectivity requirements.
HTTP 404 Wrong endpoint, API version, resource path, or account-specific route. Copy the endpoint from the current authenticated documentation for your product; do not guess a website URL.
HTTP 429 or throttling Request rate or quota exceeded. Honor the documented limit and any Retry-After header; reduce concurrency and use bounded backoff.
Timeout or connection failure Network path, firewall, DNS, proxy, or registered-IP configuration is incorrect, or the service did not respond in time. Check the authorized host’s network configuration and DNS, then retry transient errors within a bounded policy.
Unexpected response shape The endpoint returns an error object, a different media type, or a schema that differs from assumptions. Check status and content type before parsing; follow the product schema and handle missing optional fields.
Works interactively but not in deployment The deployed host uses different credentials, permissions, or outbound IP. Verify the deployment secret and registered network address without copying browser cookies.
Article text is absent The chosen product or entitlement may provide headlines or other fields but not article bodies. Ask Bloomberg to confirm the exact fields and rights available under your contract; do not fall back to page scraping.

6. If you only need a screenshot of a public page

A screenshot captures a visual rendering; it does not grant permission to extract, store, or republish Bloomberg article text. For a visual QA task on a page you are authorized to capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from ScreenshotNeo. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request captures a page you are authorized to screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say what happened. Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These screenshot features do not provide Bloomberg article data or permission to scrape it.

Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

7. FAQ

Can I scrape full Bloomberg articles if I can read them in my browser?

Browser access alone does not establish permission to automate access or extract article text. Bloomberg’s terms require prior express written consent for automated access. Ask Bloomberg about a licensed route for your use case.

Does Bloomberg Data License include full article text?

The public Data License page lists News, but it does not settle whether a particular contract includes full text or a specific downstream use. Confirm fields and rights with Bloomberg.

Can I use blpapi-node to fetch Bloomberg.com stories?

No. The maintained Node.js binding is for authorized Bloomberg Open API use; it is not a website scraping tool. Follow the access and setup requirements for your Open API entitlement.

Is SAPI the same as Bloomberg News API?

The cited SAPI page describes real-time, historical, and reference data for client-server applications. It does not establish that SAPI supplies article text. Confirm product coverage with Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s terms allow links to publicly accessible pages subject to the terms. A link does not grant permission to copy the article body or create a database from it.
