How to Screenshot Google Results With Dark Mode Enabled

Set Google Search to Dark theme, then capture the results on desktop or mobile. Learn the right shortcuts, fixes, and a browser-free API option.

To screenshot Google results in dark mode, first set Google Search itself to Dark theme, then use your computer or phone’s built-in screenshot tool. Changing Chrome’s appearance alone does not reliably make Google Search results dark: Google Search and Chrome have separate theme settings.

1. Set Google Search to Dark theme

On a computer, open Google Search and follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings, then choose See all settings.
  2. Open Appearance.
  3. Select Dark theme.
  4. Click Save.

Google Search’s appearance setting applies to Search pages, including the homepage, results page, and Search settings. Google describes Dark theme as light text on a dark background. The default Device default option follows your device’s current color scheme; choose Dark theme explicitly if you want Search to stay dark regardless of that scheme. See Google’s instructions for changing Search browser settings.

Chrome has a separate dark appearance setting. It can darken Chrome surfaces such as the homepage, toolbar, and settings, but it is not a substitute for setting Google Search’s appearance. If results are still light, check Search’s Appearance setting directly. See Google Chrome’s Dark mode guidance.

2. Compose the results page

  1. Run the search you want to capture, or refresh the results page after changing the theme.
  2. Make sure the query and the results you want to share are visible.
  3. Close menus and dismiss browser pop-ups that cover the results.
  4. Choose a region, window, or full-screen capture using your device’s built-in screenshot tool.

A standard screenshot captures what is visible on screen. If the results continue below the fold, capture another screen after scrolling, or use a supported scrolling-capture feature on your device.

3. Take the screenshot on your device

Windows 10 and 11

Press Windows+Shift+S, then select the area containing the dark Google results. Snipping Tool also provides window and full-screen capture modes. If the shortcut does not work, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool options.

Mac

  • Shift+Command+4: select a region.
  • Shift+Command+3: capture the entire screen.
  • Shift+Command+5: open Screenshot controls.

Mac screenshots save to the desktop by default. For more options, see Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.

Android

Press Power+Volume Down together. On Android 12 and later, Capture more is available on most screens that support scrolling, so you may be able to capture more than the visible results. Screenshots are typically available in Photos or, on some older devices, Gallery. Button behavior can vary by manufacturer; see Google’s Android screenshot instructions or your phone maker’s guidance.

iPhone

  • On models with Face ID, press the side button and volume-up button together.
  • On models with a Home button, press the Home button and side button together.

Screenshots are saved in Photos. iPhone’s Full Page option appears only in supported contexts; Apple documents it for supported webpage captures such as a webpage in Safari, so do not assume it will be available for every Google results page or browser. See Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions.

4. Check and save the image

Open the screenshot preview or the destination folder or app for your device. Confirm that the page is dark and that the search query and intended results are readable. Save or share the image from the screenshot interface. If the theme looks right in the browser but the capture is light, check that the screenshot shows the actual results page and not a different window or a partially updated page.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot in a script or workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. The Google theme setting is a Search preference; this API call captures the URL you provide, so use it when the page’s appearance is already suitable for your capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=dark+mode -o shot.webp

if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. Search result pages may vary with Google’s settings, location, and session; verify that the URL and rendered page match the result you need. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter pop-ups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client call screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
Google results are light, but Chrome is dark Chrome’s theme and Google Search’s theme are separate. Open Google Search Settings > See all settings > Appearance, choose Dark theme, and save.
Search changes between light and dark Search may be set to Device default, which follows the device scheme. Select Dark theme explicitly in Search Appearance.
The settings menu does not match these steps Google’s interface and labels vary by device and can change. On a computer, look for Search settings and Appearance. On a phone, use Google’s device-specific instructions and select the Search theme setting.
A screenshot shortcut does nothing Shortcut behavior differs by operating system or device maker, or the capture app may not be available. Open the built-in capture tool from the system menu. On Android, check the device maker’s instructions.
The screenshot cuts off lower results A normal screenshot captures only the visible screen or selected region. Scroll and capture another portion. On Android 12 or later, try Capture more on a supported scrollable screen. On iPhone, use Full Page only if the option appears for that app and page.
The screenshot shows a different theme than expected The page may not have refreshed after the preference changed, or the capture may show another window. Rerun the search or refresh, confirm the visible results are dark, then capture that browser window.

Performance, reliability, and cost

For one screenshot, the built-in device capture is the shortest route and requires no separate screenshot service. It captures the current rendered screen, so allow the page to finish loading and keep the relevant results visible before capturing. A partial or scrolled capture may be clearer than shrinking a long page into one image.

For repeated or automated captures, an API avoids manually opening the screenshot interface each time, but the captured page can still depend on its URL, current appearance settings, session, and Google’s interface. Check the returned image rather than assuming the same result page will always render identically. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its plans are Free: 1,000 shots/month; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan.

FAQ

Does Google Search dark mode change search results themselves?

It changes the Search page appearance. Individual websites linked from results keep their own designs.

Will the screenshot include my browser tabs and toolbar?

A full-screen capture may include browser and desktop areas. Select the results region or browser window if you want to omit unrelated screen content.

Can I use a dark Chrome theme instead of changing Search settings?

Use Google Search’s own Appearance setting to control the results page theme. Chrome’s dark setting affects Chrome surfaces separately.
