How to save a screenshot of an Indian tax filing page behind a login

Need a record of a filed ITR or a screenshot of the page? Find the right option, capture safely on Windows or Mac, and troubleshoot common issues.

If you need proof of filing, a copy of your return, or a processing notice, first check whether the Indian Income Tax e-Filing portal offers the official document for download. If you need to preserve exactly what a logged-in page currently displays, use your computer’s built-in screenshot tool to capture the relevant area. A screenshot records visible pixels; it is not a substitute for an ITR-V acknowledgement, the complete return PDF, or an intimation order.

1. Choose the record you actually need

Before taking a screenshot, decide what you need to preserve:

Need Recommended route What you get
Proof that a return was filed Check ITR Status and download the available record For example, the ITR-V acknowledgement
A copy of the filed return Download the complete ITR form PDF, if available An official return document
Notice about processing Download the intimation order after processing The available processing document
A particular page state, error, or visible detail Capture the screen or selected region An image of what was displayed

The Department’s ITR Status service lists the ITR-V acknowledgement, uploaded JSON, complete ITR form in PDF, and intimation order among the records that may be viewed and downloaded. Availability depends on the return and access route. The manual describes pre-login access for eligible cases with a valid acknowledgement number and mobile number for OTP, and post-login access for a registered user with at least one filed ITR. See the Income Tax Department ITR Status instructions.

For an intimation order, the Department’s instructions direct users to the e-Filing portal, then e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns, and the Download Intimation Order action after CPC has processed the return. See the Department’s intimation order instructions.

A Department presentation for AY 2021–22 documents Download and Print controls for a return preview and says the preview downloads as a PDF. That is a dated guide, so the current portal layout may differ. See the AY 2021–22 filing presentation.

2. Sign in through the official portal

  1. Open the official Income Tax e-Filing portal yourself.
  2. Follow the authentication options shown for your account. Department guidance describes password login and higher-security routes such as OTP, net banking, EVC, and DSC.
  3. Navigate to the relevant filed return, status, preview, or document.
  4. Use the portal’s download option if the official record is what you need. If you need the displayed page itself, capture only the relevant screen area using the steps below.

Keep your password and OTP private. The Income Tax Department says it never asks for PINs, passwords, or similar access information for financial accounts through email. Do not give your login details or OTP to anyone offering to capture the page for you. See the Department’s e-Filing security tips.

3. Capture the page on Windows

Windows 10 and 11 include Snipping Tool. Press Windows+Shift+S, then choose the relevant capture mode from the snip overlay:

  1. Choose a rectangular region for the smallest useful capture. The tool also supports window and full-screen captures.
  2. Select the page area you need. Avoid including unrelated account details or other browser tabs.
  3. Open the capture notification in Snipping Tool, review the image, and save it to a location you control.
  4. Give the file a neutral name that does not expose sensitive information in a shared folder or email subject.

Microsoft documents these Snipping Tool options for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its Snipping Tool instructions.

4. Capture the page on Mac

Use the built-in macOS screenshot shortcuts:

  • Shift-Command-4: drag to select a portion of the screen.
  • Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu.
  • Shift-Command-5: open Screenshot controls to choose full-screen, window, or portion capture and adjust options such as the save location.
  • Shift-Command-3: capture the full screen.

For tax information, a selected portion is usually the most focused capture. macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default; Screenshot controls let you change the save location. Some options vary by macOS version. See Apple’s screenshot instructions.

5. Review and protect the screenshot

  • Check the image for PAN, Aadhaar, address, bank details, income, acknowledgement number, and other information the recipient does not need.
  • Crop or redact a copy before sharing. Keep the original securely if you need it for your records.
  • Store and share the file through a channel appropriate for sensitive tax information. Check the recipient and destination before sending.
  • If a formal filing record is needed, provide the official portal document where appropriate instead of relying on a screenshot.

Redaction advice here is general privacy guidance; it does not imply that the portal provides a redaction feature.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to try
The return or document is not listed The account, return status, or access route may not meet the service’s requirements; the filing may not yet be available in that view. Confirm you are in the right account and tax year. Check the Department’s ITR Status instructions for the applicable pre-login or post-login route and eligibility.
No intimation order download appears The return may not have been processed yet, or you may be looking in another section. Check View Filed Returns and retry after processing. Follow the Department’s intimation download instructions.
The preview looks different from a guide The cited preview presentation is for AY 2021–22 and the current interface may have changed. Use the labels and download controls currently shown on the official portal.
Windows+Shift+S does not save a file immediately The shortcut opens the snip overlay; you may still need to open the capture and save it in Snipping Tool. Select the area, open the capture notification, review it, then save.
The Mac capture went to an unexpected folder The default is the desktop, or Screenshot settings may have a different save location configured. Open Shift-Command-5, check Options, and select the intended destination.
The image contains too much sensitive information A full-screen or broad window capture included unrelated details. Retake a smaller region, or redact a copy before sharing. Keep the original private if needed.
Someone asks for your password or OTP to take the screenshot They do not need your credentials to explain how you can capture your own screen. Do not share them. Sign in yourself through the official portal and use the built-in capture controls.

7. Reliability and file handling

A screenshot is useful for recording a particular display state, but it only proves what was visible in the captured image. It can omit content below the fold, fail to preserve the underlying data, or include transient messages. If the portal provides a downloadable acknowledgement, return PDF, or intimation order, save that file as well when it is the record you need.

For a useful visual record, wait until the page has finished loading, confirm that the correct return and year are displayed, and inspect the saved file after capture. A selected region reduces irrelevant content and makes it easier to review what you are sharing. No additional screenshot software or paid physical product is required for the built-in Windows and Mac methods described here.

Or skip the browser setup

For a public page that does not require your private tax account, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. MCP tools for AI agents include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Do not send private tax credentials, OTPs, or authenticated tax-page URLs to a third-party service.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. Example request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

FAQ

Is a screenshot the same as an ITR acknowledgement?

No. The acknowledgement is an official portal record. A screenshot is an image of the display. Download the official record when that is what you need.

Can I use the pre-login ITR Status service?

The Department’s manual describes pre-login access for eligible cases using a valid acknowledgement number and mobile number for OTP. Check the official instructions for current eligibility and steps.

Should I capture the whole screen?

Only if the entire screen is needed. A selected region usually records the relevant detail while exposing less unrelated information.

Can I ask someone else to log in and capture it for me?

Keep your credentials and OTP private. Use the official login flow yourself and capture the page locally.
