How to Screenshot a News Article Behind a Metered Paywall After Login
Capture an article you can access after signing in. Use Edge, iPhone Safari, or Windows Snipping Tool, and learn what to check if full-page capture is unavailable.
Direct answer: Sign in to the publisher’s site through your normal access path, open the article, then capture it with a supported browser or device feature. In Microsoft Edge, choose Web capture → Capture full page. On iPhone, Safari’s screenshot preview may offer Full Page. On Windows, Snipping Tool captures the visible screen or a selected area with Windows logo key + Shift + S.
These steps capture content available to you in your signed-in session. They do not bypass a paywall, and having account access does not by itself establish permission to share or republish a screenshot. Check the publisher’s terms and applicable law before distributing one.
1. Capture a full webpage in Microsoft Edge
- Sign in to the publisher’s website and open the article normally.
- Open Edge’s Settings and more menu (the three dots) and choose Web capture. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Choose Capture full page.
- Review the result, then save it to your device. Edge may also offer area capture, copy, and markup options.
Microsoft describes Web Capture as a way to capture an entire webpage. The exact menu or available controls can change between browser versions. See Microsoft Edge’s Web Capture guidance.
2. Capture a full-page Safari screenshot on iPhone
- Open the article in Safari after signing in.
- On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the Home and side buttons together.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail if it appears.
- If the preview offers Full Page, select it to review content beyond the visible screen. Apple gives a webpage in Safari as an example.
- Crop or annotate if needed, then save or share using the iPhone screenshot controls.
The Full Page option is presented in the screenshot preview; do not assume it will appear for every site or page. Refer to Apple’s iPhone screenshot instructions.
3. Capture the visible area in Windows
- Leave the relevant part of the signed-in article visible on screen.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose the capture mode and select a region, window, or screen as offered.
- Save or copy the captured image using Snipping Tool.
This captures what is on screen or in the selected region. It is not a full-page capture method. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool and screen capture guidance.
4. Choose the method that matches your device
| Method | Platform | Documented scope |
|---|---|---|
| Edge Web Capture | Microsoft Edge | Full webpage or selected area |
| Safari screenshot preview | iPhone | Full Page option may be available for a webpage |
| Snipping Tool | Windows | Visible screen or selected region |
These documented options differ in platform and capture scope. The available sources do not establish comparative image quality, file size, or reliability across news sites.
5. If capture is unavailable or incomplete
- The full-page option is missing: Full-page capture is not documented as universal. Try the supported method for your device or capture the visible area in sections, if appropriate.
- The shortcut does nothing: Check that the browser or operating system has focus and use the app’s menu or Snipping Tool controls. In managed environments, an administrator may disable screenshot shortcuts or extension APIs.
- A managed browser blocks a capture feature: Edge has an administrative policy that can disable screenshots. Microsoft notes that Web Capture within the browser or other methods outside the browser might still work; this describes policy behavior, not permission to evade a publisher’s restrictions. Ask your organization’s administrator about its policy.
- The article is not showing after sign-in: Confirm that the publisher recognizes your session and that the article opens through the normal access path before attempting a capture. Capture controls cannot resolve account or publisher access problems.
- The result omits content below the fold: Confirm that you chose a full-page option rather than a visible-area capture. On iPhone, the Full Page control may not be offered for every page.
Capture availability depends on the browser, device, page layout, publisher implementation, and applicable managed-device policy. Google also documents screenshot-prevention controls for managed Chrome environments in its Chrome Enterprise policy guidance.
6. Rights and responsible use
A successful login confirms that the content is accessible under your account; it does not, on its own, establish permission to redistribute the screenshot. Check the news publisher’s terms and the law that applies to your intended use before sharing or republishing it. The cited rights guidance from W3C and Microsoft covers those organizations’ own content policies and should not be treated as a statement of a news publisher’s rules: W3C intellectual rights guidance and Microsoft’s copyright guidance.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. If you already have legitimate access to a page and need a developer workflow to capture a URL, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to access. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Use it only for pages your account is permitted to access, and follow the publisher’s terms for any saved or shared output.

FAQ
Does being signed in mean I can republish the article screenshot?
Not necessarily. Access and permission to redistribute are separate questions. Check the publisher’s terms and applicable law.
Will every phone or browser offer a full-page option?
No. The cited guidance documents particular platform features, and full-page capture may depend on the browser, device, and page.
Can Snipping Tool capture an entire long webpage?
The cited Windows guidance describes screen and selected-area capture. Use a documented full-page feature where available for a whole webpage.
What if this is a work-managed device?
Screenshot methods can be limited by administrator policy. Ask your administrator which capture methods are allowed.
