Why Does My Screenshot Show a Paywall After I Sign In?

A successful login does not guarantee subscription access. Check the account, purchase channel and active plan, then refresh or contact support.

A successful sign-in proves that the service accepted your login. It does not prove that the service matched that account to an active subscription. The usual things to check are the service account used when you subscribed, the store or billing account that holds the purchase, whether the plan is still active, and whether the app needs to refresh its entitlement.

First identify where the subscription was purchased. Then check that the account currently shown in the app is the one linked to that purchase. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, use the app’s Restore Purchases option if one is available and make sure the device is signed into the purchasing store account. Verify the plan is active, refresh the app or page, and contact the provider if a valid charge still does not unlock access.

Why sign-in and paid access can disagree

Many services check identity and subscription entitlement separately. The identity check answers “Which account is this?” The entitlement check answers “Does this account currently have access to this paid feature?” A successful identity check can be followed by a failed or stale entitlement check.

A subscription can also involve two accounts: the service account you use in the app and the Apple or Google account that paid for the subscription. For some mobile subscriptions, the purchase is associated with both. If you later sign into a different service account, the store may still show a subscription while the currently signed-in service account has no matching entitlement. OpenAI documents this relationship for its mobile subscriptions; the precise behavior depends on the provider.

Diagnose the cause in this order

  1. Find the purchase channel. Look at the receipt or confirmation email and the subscription settings in the App Store, Google Play, or the service’s own billing portal. A direct web purchase may not be recoverable through an app-store restore button.
  2. Check the account inside the service. Compare the account email or sign-in method with the one you used when subscribing. Signing in with Apple, email, phone, or another identity method may lead to a different service account. Check the provider’s account page rather than assuming two sign-in methods resolve to the same account.
  3. Check the store account, if applicable. On Apple or Google Play, confirm the device is using the account that made the purchase. If a subscription is missing, check other store accounts and search your email for the receipt.
  4. Verify that the plan is active. Check the billing provider or service account that manages the subscription. A canceled or expired plan may still have a visible sign-in and purchase history without granting current access.
  5. Restore only an eligible purchase. If the app provides Restore Purchases and the subscription was bought through that store, run the restore while signed into the purchasing store account. Some purchases are not restorable: Apple distinguishes eligible non-consumables, including some subscriptions, from consumables such as in-game currency or hints.
  6. Refresh access. Close and reopen the app, reload the page, or sign out and back into the correct service account. If the app’s restore flow still fails, restart the device.
  7. Contact support if you were charged. Send the app or service provider the receipt date, product name, account email or sign-in method, device and OS version, and steps already tried. Never send your password.

Use the symptom to narrow it down

What you see What to check Likely explanation
Login succeeds, but premium features remain locked Service account used at purchase versus the account currently displayed The subscription may be tied to a different service account, or entitlement has not refreshed.
The paywall appeared after a reinstall, phone change, or account switch Store account and the app’s restore option The app may not have re-associated an eligible store purchase.
The subscription does not appear in the store Other Apple or Google accounts and receipt email The purchase may be under another store account, or billing may have been direct through the provider.
A receipt shows a charge, but the paywall remains Plan status and provider support The provider may need to repair or resync the entitlement. Do not assume another purchase is needed.
Access works in the app but not in a browser, or vice versa Service account, billing route, browser session and network filtering The app and website may use different sessions or billing checks; cached state or browser extensions may interfere.

App Store, Google Play, and direct billing

Apple App Store

Confirm the Apple Account that bought the subscription, then use the app’s restore control if the purchase is eligible. If restoration fails, Apple recommends restarting the device. If you were charged and still cannot restore a purchase, contact the app developer. Apple’s [support instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108096) explain which in-app purchases can be restored.

Google Play

Check that Google Play is using the Google Account that holds the subscription. If you cannot find it, look under other accounts on the device and search for the subscription receipt. Google advises that payments are processed by Google Play while the app developer is responsible for the app and its content; contact the developer for app-specific access problems. See [Google Play subscription troubleshooting](https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7018481).

Direct website billing

Use the service’s own billing settings and receipt to verify the account and active plan. An Apple or Google restore action generally addresses store purchases; it may not apply to a plan purchased directly from the service. Follow that provider’s account recovery and billing instructions.

Browser and screenshot-specific checks

If the paywall appears in a screenshot, determine whether the screenshot captured the same state you see interactively. A screenshot records the rendered page at capture time; it does not prove that the service has linked the subscription correctly. Check the page directly in a fresh session first.

  • Reload after signing into the account that owns the subscription.
  • Try a private browsing window to check whether stale cookies or session state are involved.
  • Temporarily check whether a VPN, ad blocker, or browser extension interferes with the provider’s access flow, if the provider recommends those checks.
  • Wait for the page’s account state to finish loading before capturing. If you control the browser automation, wait for a known post-login element or a stable page state rather than relying on a short fixed delay.
  • If the page still shows a paywall in a clean session, treat it as an account or entitlement issue and contact the service. Hiding the paywall in a screenshot would not restore access.

What not to do

  • Do not buy again immediately. A second purchase can create duplicate charges or further account confusion, especially if you are signed into a different service account.
  • Do not assume a successful login means the subscription is active. Check the billing provider’s current plan status.
  • Do not keep restoring an ineligible purchase. Consumables and some other purchase types cannot be restored through the store.
  • Do not send support your password or full payment credentials. A receipt and account identifier are usually the useful evidence.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a page after you have legitimate access, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. It does not bypass a subscription paywall or grant access.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. This runnable cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Python and Node.js examples are available there as well.

  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server lets AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client take screenshots.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Every feature is on every plan.

Reliability, speed, and cost considerations

For diagnosing a paywall, first reproduce the issue in the service itself; an automated capture cannot determine whether your account has a valid entitlement. When you do need repeatable screenshots of pages you can access, wait for a meaningful page condition, use caching where the content permits it, and distinguish a failed load from a valid page capture. ScreenshotNeo reports page verdict and billing status in response headers and bills only clean shots; choose a cache TTL based on how often the page changes.

Do not infer subscription status from a screenshot alone. Keep the receipt and account details needed for provider support, and avoid repeated purchase attempts while entitlement is unresolved.

Frequently asked questions

Can a paywall appear even when I am signed in correctly?

Yes. The login can be valid while the current account lacks an active subscription entitlement, or the app may not yet have refreshed that entitlement.

Should I restore purchases if I paid on the website?

Usually the store restore flow is for eligible purchases made through that store. Check the service’s billing settings and receipt for direct web purchases.

Will taking another screenshot fix or unlock access?

No. A screenshot records what the page displayed. Resolve the account, billing, or entitlement state with the service first.

What should I send support?

Provide the receipt’s date and product name, the service account identifier or sign-in method, device and operating-system version, and the troubleshooting steps you tried. Do not include a password.
