You can screenshot a private web page without disabling its paywall if you can already access and view the content. Use your browser or device’s built-in capture feature to save what is displayed. A screenshot does not grant access to hidden or restricted content: if you cannot view the page, sign in with an entitled account, request access, or use the publisher’s approved export or sharing option.

Before capturing, check the publisher’s terms and any workplace or managed-browser rules. If capture is blocked, respect the restriction and ask the site or administrator about an approved method.

Choose a capture method

Method What it captures Typical output
Firefox desktop screenshot A selected region, highlighted element, visible viewport, or full page Image copied or downloaded
iPhone screenshot preview Screen, or a supported Safari webpage using Full Page Image or PDF
Windows Snipping Tool Freeform or rectangular area, window, or full screen Image snip
ScreenshotNeo API A URL rendered by a screenshot service, subject to the site’s access controls and authorization PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF

Full-page capture is different from a screen or viewport capture: it may include content below the visible area. Only capture material you are authorized to view. Availability and labels vary by browser and device.

Capture a private page in Firefox

  1. Open the page and sign in with an account that is allowed to view it.
  2. Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. Choose a region, a highlighted page element, Save visible, or Save full page.
  4. Download the image or copy it, then store or share it according to the content’s sensitivity.

Firefox’s full-page option captures the page beyond the current viewport when available. It does not make content available if you lack access, and it should not be used to defeat a site restriction. See Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots instructions.

Capture on an iPhone

  1. Open the authorized page in Safari and navigate to the content you need.
  2. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On a model with Touch ID, press the side button and Home button together.
  3. Tap the screenshot preview. If Safari offers Full Page for that webpage, select it.
  4. Save the capture as an image or PDF. Screenshots are saved in Photos by default.

The Full Page option is for supported Safari webpage content; it is not available for every screen or app. For Apple’s device-specific instructions, see Apple’s screenshot guide.

Capture on Windows

  1. Open the page while signed into an account entitled to view it.
  2. Open Snipping Tool, or press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  3. Choose a freeform, rectangular, window, or full-screen snip and select the area or window containing the authorized content.
  4. Save or share the snip using the available controls.

Snipping Tool captures a region, window, or screen. The cited Windows instructions do not describe it as a webpage-aware full-page capture feature. For content below the viewport, use a browser feature that explicitly supports full-page screenshots, provided the site and your organization allow it. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Use a screenshot API for an authorized page

An API can render a URL and return an image or PDF, which is useful for repeatable developer workflows. It does not bypass authentication or make restricted content fair to capture. Use only pages you are authorized to access, and do not work around a paywall, CAPTCHA, or capture policy. For a private page, an API needs an authorized way to access it; do not put account credentials or session cookies into a third-party request unless you have permission and have reviewed the service’s security and data handling.

ScreenshotNeo with cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com \
  -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
with open("shot.webp", "wb") as image_file:
    image_file.write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://example.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await (await import('node:fs/promises')).writeFile('shot.webp', image);

Replace the example URL with a page you are permitted to capture. These basic examples request a screenshot of a URL; they do not supply private login credentials. Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for supported options and authentication details. ScreenshotNeo supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, along with full-page capture, CSS selector element capture, device and viewport settings, custom headers and cookies, and other capture options. Use authentication-related options only where you have authorization to access and capture the page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Plans include 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card, then paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See the documentation, or visit ScreenshotNeo to learn about the service. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Respect access and managed capture controls

A screenshot records content displayed to you; it does not authorize access to material hidden behind a paywall. If a page asks you to subscribe or sign in, use an entitled account or request access. If the publisher provides an approved export, print, or sharing function that meets your need, use it.

Some organizations manage screenshot permissions in Chrome. Google documents that Chrome Enterprise Premium can prevent capture for managed users across keyboard shortcuts and apps or extensions that use Chrome’s screenshot API, with URL exceptions controlled by administrators. If capture is blocked in a managed environment, contact the administrator rather than trying another capture route. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise screenshot protection documentation.

Treat screenshots of private pages as sensitive files. Crop account names, notifications, unrelated tabs, and personal details before sharing, and store the result somewhere appropriate for its sensitivity. Follow the publisher’s terms and applicable rules; the available capture instructions do not establish one universal legal rule for every screenshot or reuse.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
The page shows a paywall or sign-in prompt The current account or session cannot view the requested content Sign in with an entitled account, obtain access from the publisher, or request an approved export. Do not attempt to remove or bypass the paywall.
Screenshot controls are disabled or capture is blocked The site, browser, or organization may enforce a capture restriction Respect the control and ask the site or administrator about an approved capture or export method.
The capture only contains what was on screen The chosen tool captured the viewport or selected area; full-page capture may not be supported there Use Firefox’s Save full page or Safari’s Full Page option where supported and allowed. Windows Snipping Tool is documented for region, window, and screen capture.
Part of the page is missing The content may not have loaded yet, or may appear only after scrolling or interaction Wait for the visible content to finish loading and capture the relevant area. Do not use automation to expose content you cannot access.
An API returns an error or an unexpected page The URL may be invalid, the page may fail to load, or it may require access the request does not have Check the URL and API credentials, inspect the response and its headers, and confirm that the page is publicly reachable or that you are using an authorized access method. Never send credentials without permission.
The saved screenshot contains private details The capture included surrounding browser or page information Crop or redact sensitive details before sharing and store the file appropriately.

Performance, reliability, and cost

  • Choose the smallest capture that works. A viewport or selected region is usually simpler to review and share than a full-page image. Full-page captures can include substantially more page content.
  • Wait for the content you need. If an authorized page is still loading, an early capture may omit content. Browser screenshot tools capture the current rendered state; API services may expose wait and capture options in their documentation.
  • Keep sensitive access details safe. Avoid embedding secrets in scripts, command history, source control, or logs. Only provide private-page access information to a service when you are authorized and have assessed the handling implications.
  • Check the output format and storage. Firefox downloads or copies an image; iPhone can save supported full-page content as an image or PDF; Windows saves a snip. Choose a format suited to the intended use and protect the resulting file.
  • API cost depends on the service and plan. ScreenshotNeo states that only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its response includes page-verdict and billing headers. Current listed plans are Free: 1,000 shots monthly; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan.

FAQ

Can I screenshot a page I’m signed into?

Yes, if you are authorized to view and capture the displayed content and no site or organizational rule prevents it. A login alone does not establish permission to share the result.

How do I take a full-page screenshot without bypassing the paywall?

Use a built-in full-page option, such as Firefox’s Save full page or Safari’s Full Page for supported webpage content, while signed in with authorized access. The capture should include only content you can legitimately view.

Can a screenshot reveal content that is not visible to my account?

No. Capture tools record rendered content; they do not provide authorization to hidden or locked material. Request access or an approved export from the publisher.

What if my employer blocks screenshots?

Follow the managed-browser policy and ask your administrator whether an approved exception or export is available.
