How to Screenshot a Subscription Page That Reveals Text Only After Clicking Continue Reading
Click the page’s own Continue reading control, wait for the text to appear, then capture the visible area or full page. A screenshot cannot reveal content you cannot access.
Use the subscription page’s own Continue reading control if it is available to you. Wait until the additional text appears and loading finishes, then take a screenshot. If the passage extends below the screen, use a browser full-page capture where supported. A screenshot records what is displayed; it does not grant access to text that remains unavailable.
1. Reveal the text using the page’s control
- Open the page and, if you can use it, select its Continue reading control.
- Wait for the page to finish expanding or loading. Some pages reveal content immediately; others fetch it after a short delay.
- Confirm that the exact passage you want is visibly present. If the page instead shows a subscription prompt, sign-in request, or access error, the text is not available to capture.
Access depends on what the publisher serves to your browser and what your account is allowed to view. A screenshot or reading view cannot supply content the site withholds. Google’s documentation distinguishes content available to users from paywalled content and explains how publishers can mark that content for search engines: Google Search Central’s paywalled content guidance.
2. Choose what to capture
| Capture type | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Visible area (viewport) | The revealed passage fits on screen. | Make sure the text is not clipped at the top or bottom. |
| Full page | The passage continues below the visible area and your browser supports full-page capture. | Check that the expanded text appears in the saved result and that the page did not change while capturing. |
| Selected area | You need just the displayed passage or a particular part of the page. | Include the complete lines and enough surrounding context to identify the passage. |
Full-page capture can include content below the viewport when supported. Playwright documents viewport, element, and full-scrollable-page screenshots in its screenshot guide. Microsoft Edge describes capturing a full page or selected area with its Screenshot feature; availability and behavior can vary by device, market, and browser version (Edge Screenshot).
3. Capture it in your browser or on your device
Browser menus and keyboard shortcuts vary by browser, operating system, and version, so use the screenshot command available on your device. In Edge, use the Screenshot feature and choose a full-page or selected-area capture if those choices are offered. On other browsers and devices, use the built-in screenshot command, then inspect the saved image.
- Keep the revealed passage visible.
- Choose a viewport, full-page, or selected-area capture as appropriate.
- Save or copy the result using the browser or operating system controls.
- Open the saved image and check that the text is readable and the desired passage is complete.
If you need a repeatable capture in your own browser automation, Playwright can capture the current viewport or full page. Install it in a Node.js project with npm install -D playwright, then install a browser with npx playwright install chromium. Save this as capture.mjs and run node capture.mjs:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) throw new Error('Usage: node capture.mjs <page-url>');
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
// This clicks a matching visible control only. Inspect the page first and
// change the selector to match its actual Continue reading control.
const control = page.getByRole('button', { name: /continue reading/i });
if (await control.count()) {
await control.first().click();
} else {
console.warn('No matching button found; inspect the page and adjust the locator.');
}
// Wait for the reader to verify the text is displayed before capture.
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'subscription-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
This example is a starting point, not a universal subscription-page script. A site may use a link, a differently named button, a sign-in flow, or content that is not available to your account. Update the locator for the page, and only capture content you can access. Playwright’s documentation covers full-page and element screenshots.
Reading mode is not a reliable substitute
Reading mode presents a page in a different reading surface; it is not itself a screenshot method and does not unlock restricted material. Chrome says Reading mode is not available on all sites and may not work as expected on some page types, including payment pages and login screens. See Chrome Help: Use Reading mode in Chrome and Microsoft Edge Reading mode support.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. For an accessible page, request its URL directly:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer()));
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting
| What happened | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The text did not appear after clicking. | The control may require a signed-in account, subscription, or another step; the page may also have failed to load. | Check the page’s access message and wait for loading to finish. Use the publisher’s normal access flow. A screenshot cannot reveal withheld text. |
| The screenshot only shows the original short passage. | The capture started before the control finished expanding or before new content loaded. | Wait until the full passage is visible, then capture again. |
| The bottom of the passage is missing. | You captured only the viewport, or full-page capture is unavailable or incompatible with that page. | Use a supported full-page mode, capture successive visible sections, or select a larger area if available. Inspect the output. |
| Playwright reports that the locator was not found. | The control may be a link, have different accessible text, or be rendered in a different frame. | Inspect the page and use a locator matching its actual control. Do not assume every page uses a button named “Continue reading.” |
| Reading mode omits or rearranges the passage. | Reading mode support and page compatibility vary. | Capture the original page after the text is visible. Chrome lists payment pages and login screens among examples where Reading mode may not work as expected. |
| The saved image is hard to read. | The page may be zoomed out, the selected region too small, or the image display scaled down. | Increase page zoom or capture a larger area, then open the original image at full size. |
Performance, reliability, and saved-image checks
- Wait for the content, not just the click. A delayed reveal can produce a screenshot of the old page if capture begins too soon.
- Use the smallest capture that preserves context. A viewport or selected area is quicker to inspect and easier to share; full-page capture is useful when the passage extends below the fold.
- Verify the output. Confirm the revealed words are present, the text is legible, and no part of the passage is clipped.
- Expect page differences. Browser capture features vary across versions and devices, and dynamic pages can change during capture. If the result is incomplete, retry after the page settles or capture visible sections separately.
- Cost. Built-in browser and operating-system screenshots do not require a screenshot API. If using a hosted service, check its current plan and billing rules; for ScreenshotNeo, the stated Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month and paid plans begin at $5 for 3,000.
FAQ
Can a screenshot show subscription text I cannot see?
No. It records what the page displays to you and does not provide access to withheld content.
Should I capture before or after selecting Continue reading?
After selecting it, once the desired text has appeared and loading has finished.
Will Chrome Reading mode always include the revealed text?
No. Chrome says Reading mode is not available on every site and may not work as expected on some page types. Capture the original page if the text is visible there.
Do I need an API to save one screenshot?
No. A browser or operating-system screenshot is enough for a one-off capture. An API is useful when you need repeatable captures from code.
