How to Screenshot a Web Page in Dark Mode on Windows

Set the page’s appearance in Microsoft Edge, then use Windows Snipping Tool to capture the visible area. Learn the limits and alternatives.

To screenshot a web page in dark mode on Windows, first make the page look the way you want in Microsoft Edge, then press Windows + Shift + S and select the visible area with Snipping Tool. Edge’s Dark appearance changes the browser interface; it does not necessarily change the website’s colors. To darken the page itself, use Edge Web Remix’s dark mode when the control is available for that page.

Choose what should look dark

There are two different things you may want to darken:

Option What it changes Use it when
Edge Dark appearance The browser interface, such as its menus and surrounding chrome. You want the browser frame to appear dark in the capture.
Web Remix dark mode The webpage’s appearance in your browser session, if supported and available. You want the website content itself to appear dark.
Snipping Tool Nothing about the page’s colors; it captures what is currently displayed. You have arranged the appearance and visible content you want to save.

Changing Edge’s theme alone does not prove that a site has been restyled. Microsoft says a Web Remix changes only your view during the browser session. See Microsoft’s guides to Edge’s dark theme and Web Remix.

Capture the page with Snipping Tool

  1. Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Set the desired appearance. For a dark Edge interface, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Overall appearance and choose Dark. For dark webpage content, select the Remix icon in the address bar, then choose Appearance > Turn on Dark mode if that option is available.
  3. Scroll and position the page so the content to include is visible. Close menus and overlays you do not want in the image.
  4. Press Windows + Shift + S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
  5. For a selection mode, drag over the area to capture. The capture is copied to Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save, or share it.

These Snipping Tool steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft documents PrtSc as another way to put a static full-screen image on the clipboard. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

What each snip mode captures

  • Rectangular: Drag a rectangle around the visible page area you need. This is usually the best choice when you want to exclude browser controls.
  • Freeform: Draw an irregular selection around part of the display.
  • Window: Select a window to capture it, including parts of its interface.
  • Full screen: Capture the current display.

The Windows shortcut captures the displayed screen area. It does not provide a single tall screenshot of an entire scrollable webpage. For a long page, capture separate sections or use a tool designed for full-page capture.

Make the webpage itself dark

Edge’s built-in Dark appearance setting affects Edge’s interface. To change the page’s appearance, Microsoft documents Web Remix: select the Remix icon in the address bar and choose Appearance > Turn on Dark mode when offered. Availability can depend on the site and the current Edge interface. Microsoft says the Appearance Remix runs locally and does not send page data to Microsoft for that operation.

If Remix or its Appearance control is missing, check Edge’s current version and the Appearance options available for the page. Microsoft rolls out visual changes gradually, so controls may differ. Do not assume that Windows dark mode, Edge’s interface theme, and a website’s own dark theme are interchangeable. Microsoft also notes that app-specific dark settings are separate and not every app supports dark mode; see Personalize your colors in Windows.

Save a long page or include its background

Snipping Tool’s documented modes capture a visible region, a window, or the screen. They do not promise to stitch a page’s full scrollable length into one screenshot. For a long page, take multiple captures, or use a browser capture feature or screenshot API that explicitly supports full-page output.

If your goal is a printout rather than an image, Edge has a separate print setting: press Ctrl + P, open More settings, and enable Background graphics to include page backgrounds in print output. This is a print option, not a Snipping Tool setting. See Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its screenshot options include full-page capture, dark mode, viewport and device presets, and custom CSS or JavaScript. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

These examples capture the URL as requested; configure the API’s dark mode option when you need a dark capture. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
The website is still light after setting Edge to Dark. That setting themes Edge’s interface, not necessarily the page. Use Web Remix’s Appearance dark mode if it is available for that page.
The Remix icon or dark mode option is missing. The control may not be available for that page, or the Edge interface may differ by version or rollout. Check Edge’s available Appearance controls and current version. Do not expect every page to offer the feature.
The screenshot includes browser tabs or menus. You selected a window or full-screen mode, or a menu was open. Close unwanted overlays and choose rectangular snip to select only the page area.
The screenshot shows only part of a long page. Snipping Tool captures the displayed screen area; it does not document a full-page stitching mode. Capture multiple sections or use an explicitly full-page capture workflow.
The screenshot background is missing from a printout. Printing and screenshot capture use different controls. For print output, use Edge’s More settings > Background graphics.
Windows + Shift + S does not open the capture overlay. The shortcut or Snipping Tool may be unavailable or managed differently on the PC. Open Snipping Tool from Windows and start a new snip. If you only need the full display on the clipboard, try PrtSc.

Performance, reliability, and cost

For a one-off capture of the visible screen, Snipping Tool avoids installing a separate capture service and has no per-capture API charge. Its key limitation is scope: the desired content must be displayed on screen, and long pages need multiple captures or another method. Edge Web Remix can alter the view for that browser session, so confirm the page looks right before capturing.

For repeatable captures, automation, or full-page output, an API can avoid manually arranging the browser. ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots: bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers say which outcome occurred. Caching can be configured with a chosen TTL. Pricing is Free for 1,000 shots/month, Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is on every plan.

FAQ

Does Windows dark mode automatically make every website dark?

No. Windows, Edge, and a site’s own appearance settings can be separate. Use a page-level option such as Edge Web Remix when available.

Will the screenshot include Edge’s dark browser frame?

Yes, if you capture a window or full screen while Edge is using its Dark appearance. A rectangular selection can exclude the browser frame.

Can I capture a dark page without changing the site for other visitors?

Web Remix changes your view during your browser session; it does not change the publisher’s original page.

Does printing with background graphics create a screenshot?

No. It affects print output. Use Snipping Tool for a screen image.
