To screenshot a webpage in Chrome on Linux, open DevTools, turn on Device Mode, open its More options menu, and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page, including content below the fold. These are separate capture options in Chrome DevTools. Chrome DevTools documentation

Choose the right screenshot

  • Capture screenshot: saves the page as currently framed in the browser viewport. Use it when you want the visible section only.
  • Capture a full size screenshot: captures the whole page, including content outside the visible viewport. Use it for a long article, landing page, or complete page review.

Full size capture does not mean browser zoom or full-screen mode. Zoom changes how large page content appears; full-screen mode changes how Chrome occupies the display. Neither is the DevTools control for capturing content below the fold. Chrome zoom and full-screen shortcuts

Steps in Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools. You can use Chrome’s menu to find Developer Tools, or use the keyboard shortcut configured for DevTools on your system.
  3. Turn on Device Mode in DevTools.
  4. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  5. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page.
  6. When Chrome saves the image, check the download location configured in Chrome if it is not immediately obvious where the file went.

Chrome documents both screenshot actions in the Device Mode menu. Device Mode screenshot controls

Open the screenshot command with the Command Menu

You can also use DevTools’ Command Menu to find screenshot actions. On Linux, open the menu with Control+Shift+P, then type a screenshot-related command and choose the matching action if it appears. The shortcut is documented by Chrome. Chrome DevTools Command Menu

The Command Menu wording may vary across Chrome versions. If you cannot find the command, use the documented Device Mode More options menu and choose the capture action there. The full-size screenshot workflow is documented on Chrome’s Device Mode page.

What to do if the screenshot is wrong

The image only shows what was visible

You likely chose Capture screenshot. Repeat the steps and choose Capture a full size screenshot to include content beyond the viewport.

The page is cut off or some content is missing

Confirm that the target page has finished loading and that you selected the full-size option. Pages that load more content as you scroll can behave differently from a static page; inspect the saved image and, if necessary, scroll through the page to trigger content before capturing again. Chrome’s cited documentation explains the capture choices, but does not promise how every site’s dynamic or lazy-loaded content will render.

You cannot find the capture action

Make sure DevTools is open and Device Mode is enabled, then check its More options menu. The Linux Command Menu shortcut is Control+Shift+P; if its command list does not show the action, return to the Device Mode menu.

You changed zoom or entered full-screen mode by mistake

On Linux, Chrome lists Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- for zoom and F11 for full-screen mode. Those controls change the display, not the capture scope. Use the DevTools screenshot actions instead. Chrome keyboard shortcuts

Chrome itself will not run on your Linux system

Check Google’s current system requirements and supported Linux distributions. Compatibility depends on the system and processor requirements listed there. Google Chrome system requirements

If you need repeatable screenshots from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
