How to Take a Screenshot of a Webpage in Chrome on a Mac

Capture a visible area, a Chrome window, or a full webpage on Mac. Learn where screenshots save, how to copy them, and what to try if DevTools has no full-page command.

To capture what is visible in Chrome on a Mac, press Shift-Command-4 and drag over the page area. To capture the entire webpage, including content below the viewport, open Chrome DevTools with Command-Option-I, open the DevTools command menu with Command-Shift-P, search for Capture full size screenshot, and run it. Apple documents the Mac shortcuts; the full-page DevTools command is community guidance and may differ by Chrome version.

Choose what you want to capture

Capture Method What it includes
A visible part of the page Shift-Command-4, then drag The selected screen area only
The Chrome window Shift-Command-4, Space, click the window The visible browser window
The full webpage DevTools command menu: Capture full size screenshot Page content beyond the current viewport, when the command is available

Mac screenshot shortcuts capture screen pixels, not the webpage’s underlying document. Apple describes the built-in options as capturing the entire screen, a window, or a portion of the screen in its Take a screenshot on Mac guide.

Capture a visible area of Chrome

  1. Bring the Chrome window to the front and scroll or resize it so the content you need is visible.
  2. Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
  3. Drag across the area to capture, then release the mouse or trackpad button.
  4. Click the floating thumbnail to edit or mark up the screenshot. Otherwise, wait for it to save to the desktop.

Press Esc before releasing to cancel. This is the quickest choice for a chart, error message, or part of a page that fits on screen.

Capture the Chrome window

  1. Press Shift-Command-4.
  2. Press and release the Space bar. The pointer changes to a camera.
  3. Move the camera over the Chrome window and click.

To omit the window shadow, hold Option while clicking. This captures the visible window, including its browser framing; it does not scroll the webpage to capture content below the viewport.

Capture the full webpage with Chrome DevTools

Use this when the page extends below the screen and you want one tall screenshot.

  1. Open the page in Chrome.
  2. Press Command-Option-I to open DevTools. Chrome Help lists this as the Mac shortcut for DevTools in its Chrome keyboard shortcuts reference.
  3. Press Command-Shift-P to open the DevTools command menu.
  4. Type Capture full size screenshot in the command search.
  5. Select the matching command and wait for Chrome to create the image.

The full-size command sequence comes from a Chrome Community answer, not the reviewed official Chrome shortcut page. Community guidance may be out of date, so the command may not appear in every Chrome version or configuration.

A full-page image can be very tall. Large pages, lengthy feeds, and pages that keep loading content as you scroll may take longer or produce a very large file. If the page uses lazy loading, content that has not loaded may not appear; scroll through the page first and try again, or capture sections separately.

Save somewhere else or copy to the clipboard

By default, macOS saves screenshots to the desktop. To change the destination, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app, choose Options, and select a save location. You can also use the floating screenshot thumbnail’s controls. To copy a capture to the clipboard, hold Control while taking it, or Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions for the current controls.

Troubleshooting

The full-size command does not appear

Check that DevTools is open and that you opened its command menu with Command-Shift-P. Search for “full size” as well as the full command name. The documented evidence for this command is a community answer, so it may have changed or be unavailable in your Chrome version. Use a visible-area capture or capture the page in sections if it is missing.

The screenshot is only the visible viewport

The macOS region and window shortcuts capture what is on screen. For content below the fold, use the DevTools full-size command if available; scrolling the page and taking one ordinary screenshot does not join the separate views together.

The screenshot is saved in the wrong place

Open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5, choose Options, and select the intended destination. The default is the desktop.

The capture includes a window shadow

For a window capture, repeat the camera-pointer steps and hold Option as you click the Chrome window.

You wanted to paste the image instead of saving a file

Hold Control along with the capture shortcut, or use the thumbnail’s Save to Clipboard option, then paste into the target app.

The page is incomplete or changes while capturing

Wait for the visible content to finish loading. Pages that load more content as you scroll may need to be scrolled through before capture; otherwise, capture separate sections. A screenshot records the page’s rendered appearance at capture time, so moving elements, open menus, and overlays may be included if visible.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A single request can return an image or PDF, which is useful when you need repeatable captures, automation, or screenshots for an AI agent. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ

Does a Mac screenshot shortcut work only in Chrome?

No. The macOS shortcuts capture the screen or a window, regardless of which app is in front.

Can I capture a webpage as one full-page image without DevTools?

The reviewed sources establish the DevTools command as the available Chrome workflow. If it is missing in your version, the sources do not confirm another built-in full-page method; capture sections with macOS shortcuts or use a screenshot service.

Where do Mac screenshots go by default?

They save to the desktop unless you change the destination in Screenshot’s Options.
