How to screenshot a webpage with a cookie banner in Chrome
Use Chrome DevTools to capture a page with its cookie banner visible or after a consent choice, as a viewport image or full-page screenshot.
To screenshot a webpage in desktop Chrome with its cookie banner visible, leave the banner open, then use Chrome DevTools’ Device Toolbar and choose Capture screenshot or Capture a full size screenshot. To capture the page after a consent choice, use the site’s own consent controls first and then capture. The first command saves the visible viewport; the second includes content beyond it.
Choose what the screenshot should show
| Capture choice | What appears | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Banner visible | The page in its current first-visit state, including the consent prompt. | Bug reports, consent-flow documentation, or a record of what a visitor initially sees. |
| After a consent choice | The page after you accept, reject, or otherwise respond through the site’s controls. | Recording the experience after a visitor has made a choice. |
| Visible viewport | Only the page area currently shown in the browser viewport. | Capturing a specific screen or visible banner placement. |
| Full size | The full page, including content outside the current viewport. | Documenting long pages or seeing how the banner sits relative to the whole page. |
Consent behavior belongs to each website. There is no universal Chrome switch that dismisses every banner. Some sites prompt visitors to accept or reject cookies. If you need to see the first-visit prompt again, you can clear that site’s data and reload, but this may sign you out or remove saved preferences. The result also depends on how the site stores consent.
Capture the page in Chrome DevTools
- Open the target page in desktop Chrome. Wait for the content and the cookie banner to appear. If you want the banner visible, do not interact with it.
- Open Developer Tools. On Windows or Linux, use Ctrl+Shift+J or F12. On Mac, use Command+Option+I. See Chrome keyboard shortcuts.
- In DevTools, enable the Device Toolbar. If you want a mobile-sized capture, choose a device or viewport there. Device Mode simulates a viewport; it is not the same as using a physical phone.
- Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and select Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. Chrome documents both options in its Device Mode guide.
- Save the downloaded image. Check that the banner and the part of the page you intended to document are visible.
To capture after consent
Use the website’s own consent controls first. Choose the option you need, wait for the page to update, and take the screenshot. Some sites reload or change content after a choice, so make sure the resulting page is the state you intend to record.
To show the banner again
Clear cookies or site data for that website in Chrome’s site settings, then reload it. Prefer clearing only that site’s data rather than all browsing data. This may sign you out or remove saved site preferences, and a site may store consent in a way that means clearing cookies alone does not restore the prompt. Google explains the effects of deleting cookies in its cookie help.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF, and its consent handling is designed for clean captures. The API accepts parameters for viewport, full-page capture, output format, and many other capture options; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
Troubleshooting
| What happened | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot command is missing. | The Device Toolbar is not enabled, or the menu is open in a different DevTools panel. | Enable the Device Toolbar, then open its More options menu and look for the capture commands. |
| The banner is absent. | You already made a consent choice, or the site remembers it in cookies or other site storage. | Use the site’s consent controls if available. To test a first-visit state, clear that site’s data and reload; this can sign you out and remove preferences. |
| The banner is cut off or covers important content. | The viewport size or the banner’s position does not suit the capture. | Adjust the Device Toolbar viewport, scroll to the relevant position for a viewport screenshot, or capture full size and inspect the resulting image. |
| The full-page image does not show content you expected. | Some page content loads only after scrolling or after a delay. | Scroll through the page before capturing, wait for content to load, and try again. Site behavior varies. |
| The capture looks mobile but differs from a phone. | Device Mode simulates a viewport inside desktop Chrome. | Use it for a mobile-sized browser capture; use a physical device if the real mobile browser behavior is what you need to document. |
Performance and reliability notes
For a quick record of what is on screen, a viewport capture is usually the simpler choice. Full-page capture can take longer and produce a larger image, particularly on long pages. Wait for important content and consent controls to settle before capturing. Dynamic pages, lazy-loaded sections, and website-specific consent storage can make repeated captures differ. For repeatable records, note the viewport and whether consent was left untouched or changed.
FAQ
Can I include the cookie banner in a full-page screenshot?
Yes, if the banner is visible when you capture. Its placement and whether it remains fixed while capturing the full page depend on the site.
Does Chrome automatically reject or remove cookie banners?
No universal Chrome setting removes all consent banners. Use each site’s controls, or clear that site’s data when you need to restore a first-visit state.
Will deleting site cookies affect anything else?
It can sign you out and remove saved preferences. Chrome’s cookie help describes these effects.
Can I save a mobile screenshot from desktop Chrome?
Yes. Enable Device Toolbar and select a mobile viewport. This simulates a viewport and does not reproduce every behavior of a physical device.
