How to Set a Link Preview Image on Shopify

To set the default image for links to your Shopify store, open Online Store > Preferences in Shopify admin. Under Social sharing image and SEO, choose Add image or Change image, select the image, and click Save. This is the store-wide fallback image. It may not appear for every link: Shopify themes can use a page’s featured image or an image configured in theme code or theme settings instead.

To verify the result, test the exact page URL you plan to share. A homepage, product page, collection page, and blog post can resolve to different images. If a platform still shows the old preview, inspect the URL with that platform’s preview tool and account for its saved preview cache.

1. Set the store-wide social sharing image

  1. Sign in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Go to Online Store > Preferences.
  3. Find Social sharing image and SEO.
  4. Click Add image if the field is empty, or Change image to replace the selected image.
  5. Choose the image you want as the store’s default preview image.
  6. Click Save.

Then open the exact URL you intend to share and check its preview using the relevant social platform’s inspection tool. The preference sets a fallback; saving it does not guarantee that every page or platform will display it.

Shopify’s instructions are in its [Choosing a social media image](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/images/showing-social-media-thumbnail-images) and [Setting your online store preferences](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/setting-up/preferences) help pages. Shopify’s admin labels and theme behavior may change, so use the current labels shown in your store.

2. Know which image Shopify may use

The most common reason the saved default does not appear is that the shared URL has a more specific image source. Shopify documents the following priority for its free themes:

A page or theme image can take priority over the store-wide social sharing fallback.
A page or theme image can take priority over the store-wide social sharing fallback.
Priority Image source Typical scope What to check
1 An image hard-coded in theme files Theme-defined behavior; may affect multiple pages Theme code that sets social metadata or an image URL
2 An image configured in theme settings Depends on the theme and setting Theme settings for social sharing or checkout branding
3 The Social sharing image in Online Store > Preferences Store-wide fallback Confirm the image is selected and the preference was saved

For Shopify’s free themes, featured images are shown when a link points to a product page, collection page, or blog post. Pages without a featured image, such as the homepage or About page, use the store social sharing image. Shopify describes this behavior for its free themes; a custom or third-party theme can behave differently.

Think of the preference image as a safety net for pages without a stronger image source. If a product link shows the product’s featured image, that can be expected behavior rather than a failed preference setting. If you need a consistent image on a specific URL, inspect that page’s featured image and the theme’s metadata behavior as well as the store preference.

3. Choose and check the image

Shopify’s cited social-sharing instructions do not specify a recommended pixel dimension. Avoid treating a general image upload limit or a dimension suggested by an unrelated guide as Shopify’s official social-preview requirement. Use a clear image that represents the store or the particular page, and inspect how the destination platform renders it.

  • For the store default: choose an image that makes sense for general links such as the homepage or About page.
  • For a product, collection, or blog link: check whether that page has a featured image that will be used in place of the default in a Shopify free theme.
  • For a custom theme: look at its own social sharing settings and page metadata behavior. Do not assume it follows every detail documented for Shopify’s free themes.
  • For platform-specific display: preview the exact URL on the platform where it will be shared. Platforms can crop or present the image differently.

Shopify’s general [image upload guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/images/theme-images) covers image handling, but it does not establish a social-preview-specific dimension in the cited material.

4. Test the exact shared URL

  1. Copy the complete URL you expect people to share, including its path and any relevant query parameters.
  2. Determine whether it is a homepage, product, collection, blog, or other page.
  3. Check that page’s featured image, if it has one.
  4. Inspect the theme’s social settings if the image still does not match the preference.
  5. Use the destination platform’s preview or crawler tool to inspect what it has saved for that URL.
  6. After correcting the image source, refresh the platform’s saved preview where the platform provides that option.

Shopify names Facebook Sharing Debugger, Twitter Card Validator, LinkedIn Post Inspector, and Facebook’s Crawler as tools relevant to inspecting previews. Platform tools and names can change. For Facebook specifically, Shopify says saved information can persist for a number of days and recommends using Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh the page link’s saved information; it does not give an exact cache duration.

5. Troubleshoot a wrong or missing preview image

Symptom Likely cause Fix
A product link shows a different image than the store default The product page has a featured image. Shopify says free themes show featured images for product pages. Check the product’s featured image and inspect the exact product URL. The store preference is a fallback.
A collection or blog link uses an unexpected image The page’s featured image may take precedence in a Shopify free theme. Review that collection’s or blog post’s featured image, then preview the exact link again.
The preference image seems to be ignored Theme code or theme settings can take priority over the Preferences fallback. Inspect the theme’s social sharing settings and relevant theme code. Shopify documents hard-coded theme images first, theme settings second, and the preference image as the fallback.
The social sharing image field is blank The theme may source a share image elsewhere. Check Theme settings > Checkout > Logo and Theme settings > Social media or Social sharing, depending on the theme.
Facebook still shows the previous image after a change Facebook may be showing saved information for that URL. Use Facebook Sharing Debugger to refresh the saved information for the page link. Shopify says the cache can last a number of days but does not specify how many.
One platform shows the right image and another does not The platforms may have different saved previews or rendering behavior. Inspect the same exact URL with each platform’s available preview tool. Check that the page’s chosen image source is correct before treating it as a cache issue.
A custom theme behaves differently from the help instructions The documented featured-image selection behavior is specifically described for Shopify free themes. Review the custom theme’s social settings and metadata behavior. Verify using the actual page URL and destination platform.
The preview is still unclear after checking settings The inspected URL may differ from the one being shared, or the platform may not have refreshed its saved data. Copy the full share URL again, inspect that exact link, and refresh its saved preview if the platform offers a tool for doing so.

A blank Preferences field alone does not prove that the store has no social image configured. Shopify notes that some themes use the checkout logo or theme social settings, and some themes only display images configured in theme settings.

6. Preview the page as a screenshot

A social preview inspector helps identify the metadata a platform has saved. A browser screenshot answers a different question: what does the page itself look like when loaded? Capturing the homepage or a specific product URL can help you review the visual content and confirm that the intended page is public and rendered as expected. A screenshot does not establish what a social platform has cached or which metadata source it selected.

A browser screenshot checks page rendering; a platform preview tool checks the share card.

If you use a browser automation script for a visual check, wait for the page to render before capturing it. Pages with lazy-loaded content, consent prompts, or dynamic elements may look different if captured too early. You can also inspect the relevant page in your browser and use the platform’s preview tool for the share-card result.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF with one request. For a visual check of a Shopify page, replace the example URL with the exact public page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://your-store.myshopify.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://your-store.myshopify.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://your-store.myshopify.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are never billed. Response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
  • 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Try ScreenshotNeo with 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

7. Performance, reliability, and cost

For the Shopify setting itself, the workflow is a one-time admin change followed by verification on the URLs and platforms that matter. The main source of confusion is that the preference image is a fallback, not a command that overrides page images, theme settings, or theme code. A reliable check therefore tests the exact page type and URL, then separates an incorrect image source from an old platform preview.

Preview tools can help diagnose cached share cards; a page screenshot can help diagnose visual rendering. These checks are complementary. If you use ScreenshotNeo for screenshots, its plan prices are Free for 1,000 shots per month, Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Only clean shots are billed; the API indicates the page verdict and billing status in response headers. Choose a plan based on your expected capture volume rather than treating screenshot usage as a substitute for social-platform preview inspection.

Frequently asked questions

It changes the store’s configured fallback, but a platform may keep showing saved preview information for a URL. Refresh the preview with the platform’s inspection tool where available.

Can I set one image for the whole store and another for a product?

The store preference is the default fallback. Shopify says its free themes show featured images for product, collection, and blog pages, so those pages can have a more specific image.

Is the store preference image guaranteed to appear on every theme?

No. Shopify documents the featured-image behavior for its free themes and notes that theme code or settings can take priority. Check the behavior and social settings for your installed theme.

What image dimensions should I use?

The cited Shopify social-sharing instructions do not specify a recommended dimension. Preview the chosen image on the platform where you intend to share the URL.

Will a screenshot tell me what image Facebook or another platform selected?

No. A screenshot shows the rendered page. Use the social platform’s preview or crawler tool to inspect its link preview.

Checklist

  • Set or replace the image under Online Store > Preferences > Social sharing image and SEO, then save.
  • Test the exact URL you plan to share, not only the store homepage.
  • Check featured images for product, collection, and blog pages.
  • Review theme social settings and code if the default appears to be overridden.
  • Inspect platform caches with the relevant preview tool after changing the image.
  • Do not assume that a page screenshot and a social card preview show the same thing.
