How to Set a YouTube Thumbnail on Your Phone

Change a YouTube video thumbnail from your iPhone or Android, handle Shorts, image limits, verification, and common problems.

To set a YouTube thumbnail on your phone: open the YouTube Studio app (or YouTube app), choose your video, tap Edit and Edit thumbnail, select an auto-generated image or a photo on your phone, then confirm and save. Shorts use a different mobile workflow: YouTube lets you select a frame from the Short, while uploading a separate custom image is currently documented for YouTube Studio on a computer.

The exact labels can vary by app version. If a button is in a different place, follow the current labels shown in your app.

1. Set a thumbnail in the YouTube Studio app

  1. Open YouTube Studio on your Android phone or iPhone.
  2. Tap Content.
  3. Select the video you want to edit.
  4. Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
  5. Choose an auto-generated thumbnail, or tap Custom thumbnail to pick an image stored on your phone.
  6. Confirm the selection and tap Save.

YouTube says a thumbnail change can take time to appear. Check the video again later if the old image is still visible.

2. Set a thumbnail in the YouTube app

  1. Open YouTube and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Your videos.
  3. Open the More menu next to the video.
  4. Tap Edit, then Edit thumbnail.
  5. Select an auto-generated option or choose a custom image from your phone.
  6. Confirm and tap Save.

Both the YouTube app and YouTube Studio app provide a documented phone route for regular videos. Use whichever app has the navigation you find easier.

3. Choose a thumbnail for a YouTube Short

Shorts have two separate thumbnail actions:

  • Select a frame: In the YouTube app, choose a frame from the Short before posting or edit the selected frame after upload. You can also add text and filters in that flow. Previous edits cannot be restored through the same flow.
  • Upload a separate image file: YouTube’s custom-thumbnail help currently documents this for YouTube Studio on a computer, rather than as a phone upload route.

Therefore, if you want a designed image made separately from the video, use desktop YouTube Studio. If a frame from the video is sufficient, use the frame-selection control in the YouTube app.

4. Image requirements, limits, and eligibility

Item Regular videos Shorts
Recommended aspect ratio 16:9 9:16
Recommended size 3840 × 2160 pixels 2160 × 3840 pixels
Minimum dimension 640 pixels wide 640 pixels high
Recommended formats JPG or PNG JPG or PNG
Mobile regular-video upload limit 2 MB —
Desktop video/Shorts limit 50 MB 50 MB
  • Your account must be verified to use custom thumbnails.
  • Thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
  • Daily upload limits vary by country or region and channel history. Copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can affect eligibility or limits.
  • For vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

5. A reliable phone workflow

  1. Prepare a 16:9 image for a regular video or a 9:16 image for a Short.
  2. Keep a mobile regular-video file under 2 MB. JPG is often smaller than a PNG with the same dimensions.
  3. Use large, simple subject shapes that remain readable on a small screen.
  4. Open the video in YouTube Studio and verify that you selected the intended upload.
  5. Save once, then allow time for YouTube’s thumbnail cache to update.
  6. Check the video from another view or device if the change is not immediately visible.

6. Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
No Custom thumbnail option The channel is not verified, or account limits apply. Verify the account and check YouTube’s current eligibility and limit messages.
Upload is rejected on a phone The file exceeds the 2 MB mobile limit or uses an unsuitable format. Export a JPG or PNG and reduce its file size while keeping the required dimensions.
The old thumbnail still appears Thumbnail changes can take time to propagate. Wait, refresh later, and check from another device or signed-out view.
You cannot upload a custom image for a Short in the phone app Frame selection and separate-image upload are different workflows. Select a frame in the YouTube app, or upload the designed image with YouTube Studio on a computer.
A vertical video’s thumbnail looks different on Home YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 image on some mobile surfaces. Check the watch feed and other surfaces; this behavior is documented for vertical videos using 16:9 custom images.
Save does not complete Connectivity, an account restriction, or a temporary app problem. Retry on a stable connection, update the app, and look for an on-screen policy or limit message.

7. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean image of a webpage to use as source material for a thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot with one GET request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. It also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

8. FAQ

Can I change a thumbnail from my phone after publishing?

Yes. For a regular video, use YouTube Studio or the YouTube app and follow the edit-thumbnail steps above.

Can I use any photo from my camera roll?

For regular videos, choose a JPG or PNG that meets YouTube’s size and policy requirements. On mobile, keep it under 2 MB.

Why does my Short show a video frame instead of my designed image?

Mobile frame selection is separate from uploading a custom image. YouTube currently documents separate-image uploads for Shorts in Studio on a computer.

How long does a thumbnail change take?

YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Refresh later and check another device or view.

Will a custom thumbnail always appear everywhere?

No. A 16:9 custom image on a vertical video may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.
