How to Set SingleFileZ to Save a Page Automatically When a Tab Closes
Enable SingleFileZ’s “auto-save on tab removal” option to save a page when its tab closes. Here’s where to find it and what to check if it doesn’t work.
In SingleFileZ, enable “auto-save on tab removal” in the Auto-save section of the extension’s options. The project help describes this setting as saving pages when a tab closes. You can open the options by right-clicking the SingleFileZ toolbar button and choosing “Options” or “Manage extension.”
Enable auto-save when a tab closes
- Find the SingleFileZ button in your browser toolbar. If it is hidden, open the browser’s extensions menu and locate SingleFileZ there.
- Right-click the button and choose Options or Manage extension. The wording depends on the browser.
- In the options page, find the Auto-save section.
- Check auto-save on tab removal.
- Close a tab containing a page you are allowed to save, then check the destination configured by SingleFileZ for the saved file.
SingleFileZ’s help warns that some frame contents may be missing if remove frames is enabled while saving on tab removal. This is a possible limitation, not an outcome for every page. If your saved copy is missing embedded content, review that setting and save again.
Use the toolbar menu to choose which tabs auto-save
The toolbar button’s context menu can activate auto-save for the current tab, unpinned tabs, or all tabs. Use this when you want the behavior on a limited set of tabs rather than enabling it as a general option. The menu’s scope controls and the options-page trigger are related, but check the menu’s current state to confirm which tabs are covered.
Know which event triggers a save
For the goal of saving when a tab closes, use auto-save on tab removal. SingleFileZ documents other triggers separately:
| Setting or action | What it means |
|---|---|
| Auto-save on tab removal | Save when the tab is removed, which the help describes as closing a tab. |
| Auto-save on page unload | A separate trigger associated with a page unloading; it is not the setting specifically documented for tab closure. |
| Auto-save on tab discard | A separate trigger for a tab being discarded by the browser. |
| Auto-close the tab after the page is saved | A separate option that closes a tab after a save completes. It does not enable saving on close. |
These events are distinct. Enabling a setting for page unload or tab discard does not substitute for the tab-removal option when the desired trigger is closing a tab.
Troubleshooting
Nothing is saved when I close a tab
- Confirm that auto-save on tab removal is checked in the Auto-save section.
- Check whether you enabled auto-save only for selected tabs through the toolbar context menu. Activate it for the current tab, unpinned tabs, or all tabs as needed.
- Check the extension’s configured save destination and whether the browser is allowing the extension to save files.
- If the options page or labels differ, inspect the installed extension’s settings; the project help and marketplace interface can change over time.
The saved page is missing content from an embedded frame
The help specifically cautions that some frame contents may be missing if remove frames is enabled for this save behavior. Review that option and try saving again. Frame behavior may also depend on the page and browser; the available documentation does not promise identical results on every site.
The tab closes before I can tell whether saving finished
Check the configured download or save location after closing the tab. If you need the tab to close only after the file is saved, look for the separate auto-close the tab after the page is saved option. That setting is about closing after a save, not the trigger that initiates one.
I cannot find the options page
Right-click the SingleFileZ toolbar button and choose Options or Manage extension. If the button is not visible, locate SingleFileZ from the browser’s extensions menu, then open its options from the extension controls.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF rather than archive it as a single HTML file, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns a screenshot or PDF, and its options include full-page capture, element capture, and output formats. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
