Steam Screenshot Sizes: Dimensions and Best Practices

Steam store screenshots should be at least 1920×1080 in 16:9. Learn the rules for store assets, player captures, API uploads, and clean workflows.

For Steam store-page screenshots, use at least 1920×1080 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Steam requires at least five screenshots for a product page. These rules apply to developer-provided store assets, not automatically to every screenshot a player captures for a personal Steam library.

The right specification depends on your workflow:

Use case What Steam documents
Store-page screenshots Minimum 1920×1080, 16:9, at least five images
Player screenshots Captured through the Steam Overlay; no general pixel minimum or maximum is stated in the cited documentation
Steamworks API JPG, PNG, or TGA files with supplied width and height; optional 200-pixel-wide thumbnail

1. Steam store screenshot dimensions

Steamworks specifies 1920×1080 minimum and a 16:9 aspect ratio for store screenshots. Use a larger 16:9 source when your game supports it, then export a version that meets or exceeds the minimum without stretching the image.

You must provide at least five screenshots for a product page. Treat those images as evidence of the actual game: show gameplay, meaningful environments, combat, progression, interfaces that are part of the experience, and other scenes a prospective player will encounter.

Steam advises against using concept art, pre-rendered cinematic stills, awards, marketing copy, or written descriptions in the screenshot area. Put promotional text and awards in the store-page areas intended for them. Include a menu only when it is a distinctive part of the game.

  • Canvas is at least 1920×1080 pixels.
  • Width-to-height ratio is 16:9.
  • You have five or more distinct images.
  • Images show real gameplay and useful in-game interface elements.
  • There is no promotional copy, award badge, or long description baked into the image.
  • The scenes represent the current build and do not reveal unfinished debug elements.
  • Age-suitability flags are reviewed before publishing.

2. Why 16:9 matters

A 16:9 composition fits Steam’s documented store screenshot slot without cropping. A different ratio may leave unused space or force you to crop important HUD elements, characters, or action at the edges. Compose the original capture for 16:9 before exporting.

Do not assume that increasing one dimension fixes a ratio problem. For example, 2560×1440 is 16:9, while 2560×1600 is not. Check both dimensions together.

3. Store screenshots versus player screenshots

Players usually mean screenshots captured while playing. Steam documents that workflow separately from store assets.

The Steam Overlay must be active for Steam’s screenshot system to be available. F12 is the default screenshot hotkey, and users can change the hotkey and other screenshot settings under Steam’s Settings → In-Game. After a game closes, the Screenshot Uploader can open automatically; screenshots can also be reached through View → Screenshots or from the Overlay.

These screenshots appear on the player’s community profile and the game’s community hub. The cited Steam feature documentation does not state a universal pixel minimum, maximum, or upload-file limit for ordinary personal-library screenshots. Therefore, do not apply the store-page 1920×1080 rule to every personal screenshot.

4. Steamworks API dimensions and formats

Games integrating Steamworks can call ISteamScreenshots::AddScreenshotToLibrary. The call accepts an absolute screenshot file path plus the image width and height in pixels. The documented formats are JPG, PNG, and TGA.

You can pass an optional thumbnail. Steam’s API documentation specifies that the thumbnail should be 200 pixels wide and preserve the screenshot’s aspect ratio. If you do not provide one, Steam can generate it. The operation is asynchronous, and Steam describes a completion callback for the result.

Those API parameters describe an integration path; they do not establish a universal file-size or resolution rule for every screenshot a player uploads.

Conceptual C++ call

#include <steam_api.h>

// The path must be absolute. Width and height must match the image file.
SteamScreenshots()->AddScreenshotToLibrary(
    "/absolute/path/to/gameplay.png",
    "png",
    1920,
    1080,
    nullptr,
    0,
    0
);

Use the exact function signature and callback handling from the Steamworks SDK version used by your project. Keep the width and height values synchronized with the encoded file so downstream clients do not receive incorrect metadata.

5. Validate dimensions before publishing

A small validation step catches the two most common store-asset mistakes: dimensions below the minimum and a ratio that is not 16:9. The following Python script uses Pillow to inspect a local image.

from pathlib import Path
from PIL import Image

MIN_WIDTH = 1920
MIN_HEIGHT = 1080
TARGET_RATIO = 16 / 9
TOLERANCE = 0.01

for filename in __import__("sys").argv[1:]:
    path = Path(filename)
    with Image.open(path) as image:
        width, height = image.size
        ratio = width / height
        size_ok = width >= MIN_WIDTH and height >= MIN_HEIGHT
        ratio_ok = abs(ratio - TARGET_RATIO) <= TOLERANCE
        print(f"{path}: {width}x{height}, ratio={ratio:.4f}, "
              f"size_ok={size_ok}, ratio_ok={ratio_ok}")
        if not (size_ok and ratio_ok):
            raise SystemExit(f"Invalid Steam store screenshot: {path}")

Run it with python check_steam_screenshots.py shot1.png shot2.jpg. This checks geometry only; it does not judge whether an image shows gameplay or contains unsuitable promotional content.

6. Localization and age suitability

Steamworks lets developers add localized versions by dropping an alternative language image onto an existing screenshot thumbnail. A language suffix in the filename can help identify each localized version.

Review age-suitability flags before publishing. Steam says screenshots are not marked suitable for all ages by default and recommends flagging at least four that qualify. Missing or insufficient flags can prevent screenshots from appearing in some Steam placements.

7. Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Screenshot is rejected or does not fit the store slot Width or height is below 1920×1080, or the ratio is not 16:9 Capture or crop to a 16:9 canvas at least 1920×1080, then validate both dimensions.
Important HUD elements are cut off The source image was cropped after capture Recompose the scene for 16:9 and keep critical content away from the edges.
Store image feels like an advertisement Marketing copy, award badges, or a cinematic still was used Replace it with actual gameplay; move promotional material to the appropriate store-page fields.
Only some screenshots appear in placements Age-suitability flags are missing or incomplete Review the flags and mark at least four screenshots that qualify for all ages.
F12 does nothing The Steam Overlay is disabled or unavailable Enable the Overlay, check Settings → In-Game, and verify the configured screenshot hotkey.
API thumbnail looks distorted The thumbnail is not 200 pixels wide or does not preserve the source ratio Generate a 200-pixel-wide thumbnail using the original aspect ratio, or omit it and let Steam generate one.
API upload metadata is wrong Supplied width and height do not match the file Read the encoded image dimensions and pass those exact values to the API call.

8. Capture quality, reliability, and cost considerations

For store assets, capture at the game’s native or higher supported resolution when possible, then export a consistent 16:9 set. Keep the five required images visually distinct so they communicate different parts of the game rather than five nearly identical frames.

For player captures, reliability depends on the Overlay being active and the configured hotkey being available. For API integrations, treat the screenshot call as asynchronous and handle its completion callback. Preserve the original files until the upload result is confirmed.

The Steam documentation used here does not specify a universal file-size cap for personal screenshots, so avoid inventing one in an uploader or support article. Measure actual encoded dimensions and format instead.

9. Or skip the browser setup

If you need clean website screenshots for documentation, release pages, or automated checks alongside your Steam work, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

10. FAQ

Does every Steam screenshot need to be 1920×1080?

No. That is the documented minimum for store-page screenshots. Steam’s cited player-screenshot documentation does not state a universal resolution requirement for personal-library captures.

Can I upload a 4:3 store screenshot?

The store specification is 16:9. Reframe or crop the image to 16:9 before publishing so important content is not removed.

How many store screenshots are required?

Steam requires at least five screenshots for a product page.

Which formats does ISteamScreenshots accept?

The API documentation lists JPG, PNG, and TGA.

What size should the API thumbnail be?

An optional thumbnail should be 200 pixels wide and keep the screenshot’s aspect ratio. You can omit it and let Steam generate one.

What is the default Steam screenshot key?

F12 is the default when the Steam Overlay is active. Users can change it in Steam’s Settings → In-Game.
