How to Take, Copy, and Paste a Screenshot
Learn how to capture, copy, paste, edit, and share screenshots on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android.
The fastest method depends on your device and where you want the image to go. On Windows, use Snipping Tool or Print Screen; on Mac, press Shift-Command-3 and use the screenshot thumbnail’s clipboard option; on iPhone and Android, use the button combination for your model, then edit or share the saved image. A screenshot saved as a file and a screenshot copied to the clipboard are separate outcomes.
Choose the result you need
| Goal | Windows | Mac | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capture the whole screen | Print Screen or Snipping Tool | Shift-Command-3 | Use your model’s screenshot buttons | Power + Volume Down |
| Capture part of the screen | Snipping Tool region mode | Shift-Command-4 | Take a screenshot, then crop | Take a screenshot, then crop |
| Copy for immediate paste | Use a clipboard capture path, then Ctrl+V | Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard | Use the preview or insert the saved image in the destination app | Open the saved image and use the app’s insert or share action |
| Capture a long page | Use an app that supports scrolling capture | Use the source app or a browser extension | Use Full Page where available in Safari | Scrolling screenshots work on Android 12+ on most scrollable screens |
How to take a screenshot on Windows
Use Snipping Tool for a selected area or window
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose a mode: rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen capture.
- Drag over the area, select a window, or let the tool capture the full screen.
- Use the preview to mark up, copy, save, or share the image.
Microsoft documents these Snipping Tool modes and the available actions in its Snipping Tool guide.
Capture the entire screen with Print Screen
Press PrtScn (sometimes labelled Print Screen) to capture the screen. On some keyboards you need Fn + PrtScn. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V. If your Windows settings open Snipping Tool instead, use the preview to copy or save the capture.
Capture only the active window
Click the window, press Alt + PrtScn, then paste with Ctrl + V. This copies the active window rather than every visible monitor.
Copy a screenshot in Microsoft 365
Microsoft’s documented Microsoft 365 workflow copies selected screen contents to the clipboard so you can paste them with Ctrl + V into a document or email. The exact command depends on the Microsoft 365 app and Windows configuration; follow the app’s screen-capture command and confirm that the capture appears in the clipboard before pasting.
How to take a screenshot on Mac
Capture the whole screen
- Press Shift-Command-3.
- A thumbnail appears briefly in a corner of the screen.
- Click the thumbnail to annotate or edit it, or wait for macOS to save the screenshot.
By default, macOS saves screenshots as image files (usually on the desktop). Apple documents the shortcut and thumbnail controls in Take a screenshot on Mac.
Capture a selected area or window
- Shift-Command-4: drag to select a rectangular area.
- After pressing Shift-Command-4, press Space to capture a window.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot controls for full-screen, window, selected-area, and screen-recording options.
Copy the screenshot to the clipboard
- Take the screenshot with Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4, or Shift-Command-5.
- When the thumbnail appears, Control-click it.
- Choose Save to Clipboard.
- Open the destination app and press Command + V.
If you do not choose Save to Clipboard, use the saved file instead: drag it into the destination app or choose its Insert command. Some protected windows, including certain Apple TV content, may not allow screenshots.
How to take a screenshot on iPhone
iPhone models with Face ID
Press the side button and Volume Up at the same time, then release. Tap the thumbnail to crop, draw, or share the image, or swipe the thumbnail away to save it for later.
iPhone models with a Home button
Press the side or top button and the Home button together, then release. Tap the preview to edit or share.
Apple lists the button combinations by iPhone model in Take a screenshot on iPhone. iOS does not provide one universal button shortcut that sends every screenshot directly to the clipboard. For reuse, open the preview’s available copy or share action, or open the saved image in Photos and insert it from the destination app.
Capture a full web page in Safari
- Take a screenshot of the page.
- Tap the thumbnail, then choose Full Page when Safari offers it.
- Save the result as a PDF or use the available share action.
Full Page appears only in supported contexts; it is not available for every app.
How to take a screenshot on Android
Use the standard buttons
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume Down together.
- Release both buttons when the capture animation appears.
- Tap the preview to edit, mark up, or share.
Use the power menu fallback
If the buttons do not work, hold the Power button briefly and tap Screenshot if that option appears. Button behavior varies by manufacturer, so consult the phone maker’s current help page when neither method works.
Take a scrolling screenshot
On Android 12 and later, capture a screen that supports scrolling, then tap Capture more (the wording can vary). Extend the selection and save it. Google says this works on most screens that allow scrolling, not every app or page.
Find, edit, and share the image
On current Android versions, open Google Photos and go to Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Older phones may use the Gallery app. From there you can crop, annotate, save, or share. Sharing an image is different from copying it to a clipboard; whether a direct copy action exists depends on the app and Android version. Google’s instructions are in Take a screenshot or record your screen on your Android device.
How to copy and paste a screenshot
When the screenshot is already on the clipboard
- Open the destination: a document, email, chat, presentation, or image editor.
- Use Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac.
- If nothing appears, click inside an image-capable field and try again.
Clipboard captures are temporary. Take a new screenshot or copy another item and the previous image may be replaced. Save a file when you need a durable copy.
When the screenshot is saved as a file
- Open the destination app.
- Choose Insert, Attach, or Upload.
- Select the screenshot from your Desktop, Pictures, Photos, Gallery, or Screenshots folder.
- Alternatively, drag the image file into a document, browser upload field, or message composer.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when pressing the Windows key | The shortcut is intercepted, disabled, or the keyboard needs Fn. | Open Snipping Tool from Start, try Fn + the relevant key, or check keyboard and accessibility settings. |
| Print Screen does not paste an image | The capture was saved as a file or another clipboard item replaced it. | Take the capture again, confirm the preview, then paste immediately; otherwise insert the saved file. |
| Mac screenshot is not on the desktop | The save location was changed or the thumbnail is still open. | Open Shift-Command-5 and check Options, or Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. |
| Mac app shows a blank or blocked capture | The app protects its window or content. | Try an allowed screen, use the app’s export feature, or check the publisher’s restrictions. |
| iPhone button combination is difficult | Buttons were pressed sequentially or the model uses a different layout. | Press the documented pair simultaneously; identify whether the phone has Face ID or a Home button. |
| Android buttons open the power menu | The buttons were held too long or the manufacturer changed the shortcut. | |
| Scrolling capture is unavailable | The device is older than Android 12 or the app does not expose a scrollable screen. | Capture multiple images, use the app’s export option, or try a supported Android 12+ screen. |
| Pasting produces text or nothing | The cursor is not in an image-capable field. | Click the document body or compose area, then paste; use Insert Image if the field does not accept clipboard images. |
Quality, privacy, and reliability checklist
- Close notifications and private windows before capturing.
- Choose the smallest capture area that explains the issue.
- Use PNG for text and interface details; use JPEG when file size matters.
- Check the image for passwords, tokens, personal data, and customer information before sharing.
- Save an important capture as a file even if you first paste it from the clipboard.
- For long pages, verify that the bottom content loaded before using a scrolling capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots from URLs in a script, build pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options, including full-page capture, CSS element capture, device presets, dark mode, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and PDF output.

FAQ
Does a screenshot automatically copy to the clipboard?
No. Some Windows and Mac workflows copy directly, while others save a file or show a preview. Confirm the destination before pressing paste.
Where are screenshots stored?
Windows and Mac locations depend on the capture tool’s settings. iPhone uses Photos, and Android generally uses Photos or Gallery in a Screenshots folder.
Can I screenshot a protected video or app?
Some apps block captures or show a blank result. Use the app’s export or sharing feature and follow its access rules.
What is the quickest way to paste a screenshot?
Use a clipboard workflow, then press Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on Mac. On phones, insert or share the saved image through the destination app.
