How to Take a Screenshot in Figma
Learn every reliable way to capture Figma designs, slices, frames, and live prototypes, then automate screenshots with ScreenshotNeo.
For a static Figma design, select the frame or object, open Export in the right sidebar, add an export setting, choose a format and scale, preview if needed, and click Export. Figma saves the file through your browser download location or asks for a destination in the desktop app.
Use Export for a controlled image file, Slice for a precise region with optional padding, Copy as PNG for a fast clipboard image, and Present plus your operating-system screenshot command when you need the live prototype view.
1. Export a frame or selected design
- Select a frame, layer, component, group, or section on the canvas or in the Layers panel.
- In the right sidebar, find Export and click the + button.
- Choose a scale such as 1x, 2x, or another available value.
- Choose PNG, JPG/JPEG, SVG, or PDF.
- Optionally click Preview to inspect the result.
- Click Export and choose a filename or let the browser use its configured download folder.
Which format should you choose?
| Format | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | General screenshots, UI designs, transparency | Larger files than JPG |
| JPG/JPEG | Photographic or compact raster output | Lossy compression and no transparency |
| SVG | Scalable vector artwork and handoff | Not a conventional pixel screenshot |
| Document-oriented delivery and printing | May not match a raster screenshot workflow |
Figma documents export as a way to share designs, move content between tools, or save copies outside Figma. The export workflow is available on any plan, subject to the file owner’s copy and sharing restrictions and your access level.
2. Export only part of the canvas with Slice
- Open the Region tools dropdown in the toolbar.
- Choose Slice.
- Drag around the exact area you want to capture.
- Resize the slice or enter precise dimensions where available.
- Set optional padding so the exported image has a deliberate margin.
- Add an export setting in the right sidebar and export the slice.
A slice exports only the content inside its boundaries. This is useful when a frame contains surrounding notes, alternate states, or off-canvas elements that should not appear in the image. The Slice tool requires can edit access.
3. Copy a quick PNG to the clipboard
Select the frame or object, open its context menu, and choose Copy as PNG. Paste into a document, chat, issue, or image editor. This is the fastest route when you do not need a saved file, custom scale, format selection, or preview.
4. Capture a live Figma prototype
An exported frame contains static design pixels. To capture transitions, overlays, scrolling, device presentation, or the state visible in the prototype player, open the live presentation instead.
- Click Present in the toolbar.
- Open the prototype at the required starting point.
- Choose the appropriate scaling option and fullscreen mode.
- Put the prototype in the exact interaction state you need.
- Use your operating system’s screenshot command to capture the visible presentation.
Figma’s documented desktop shortcuts for presentation are Command-Option-Return on Mac and Control-Alt-Enter on Windows. Figma documents presentation controls, scaling, and fullscreen behavior, but not a separate native command that exports the live presentation view directly as a screenshot.
5. Choose the right method
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A complete static design | Export the frame | Includes the selected frame and gives format and scale control |
| A bounded area or custom margin | Slice | Exports only the region you define and supports padding |
| A quick image in another app | Copy as PNG | Uses the clipboard without opening export settings |
| Prototype interactions or presentation chrome | Present plus an operating-system capture | Captures the live player state |
6. Permissions and export restrictions
- People with can view access can export when the file owner has not restricted copying and sharing.
- The Slice tool requires can edit access.
- If Export or Copy as PNG is unavailable, ask the owner to review file permissions and copy restrictions.
- Organization policies can also affect whether content can be copied or exported.
7. Troubleshooting
The exported image is cropped
Check what is selected. Export uses the selected object’s bounds. Select the full frame, or create a Slice around the intended area and add padding.
My export includes extra canvas content
Select the frame or object itself instead of exporting a larger parent. For a precise boundary, use Slice.
The Slice tool is missing
Slice requires edit access. Request can edit permission or ask an editor to create and export the slice.
Export is disabled
The owner may have restricted copying and sharing, or your permission level may not allow export. Confirm access with the file owner.
The prototype screenshot does not show the right state
Open Present, navigate through the prototype first, then capture the visible state. A frame export cannot include interactive overlays or transition state.
The image looks blurry
Choose a higher export scale such as 2x where appropriate, and avoid enlarging a raster file after export. For vector artwork that must remain scalable, export SVG instead.
I cannot find a shortcut
Open Figma’s shortcuts panel from Help and resources or the actions menu. Keyboard shortcuts are enabled by default, but the panel shows the current commands for your platform.
The browser download went somewhere unexpected
Check the browser’s configured download location and its recent-downloads panel. The desktop app instead asks for a filename and destination.
8. Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of a public Figma prototype or design URL in an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a single GET request that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture steps can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Replace the example URL with your public Figma file or prototype URL.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.figma.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.figma.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.figma.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
9. Automation, reliability, and cost notes
- For occasional work, Export or Copy as PNG is simplest and avoids automation setup.
- For repeated URLs, ScreenshotNeo supports caching with a TTL you choose, async jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and a usage API.
- Use waits for a selector, a delay, or network idle when the prototype or page needs time to render.
- Use custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types when page state must be controlled.
- Set viewport, device preset, retina scale, timezone, geolocation, headers, cookies, user agent, or Authorization when the target requires them.
- For public HTML embeds, signed links can provide controlled image URLs. For documents, PDF options include paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges.
