How to Take a Screenshot in Kali Linux
On Kali Xfce, press Print Screen, then Enter. Learn the desktop-specific steps, alternatives, troubleshooting, and an API option for automated captures.
On Kali Linux’s documented Xfce desktop, press Print Screen. When screenshooter opens, press Enter to take the screenshot. Kali also documents an alternate route: click the Screen-Recorder icon in the quick-launch panel and choose Screenshot.
These instructions come from Kali’s Xfce FAQ, updated June 16, 2025. Kali supports more than one desktop environment, so the exact shortcut can differ if you installed GNOME, changed keyboard mappings, or use a customized panel.
Take a screenshot on Kali Xfce
- Focus the desktop or window you want to capture.
- Press the keyboard’s Print Screen key.
- Wait for
screenshooterto launch. - Press Enter to take the screenshot.
Kali’s documented instruction is: “Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard will launch screenshooter. Pressing enter will take the screenshot.” See the official FAQ for the original wording and context.
Use the panel instead of the keyboard
- Find the Screen-Recorder icon at the far right of the quick-launch panel, next to the application menu.
- Click the icon.
- Choose Screenshot.
This panel route is useful when the Print Screen key is missing, has been remapped, or does not respond. It also makes the distinction between a still screenshot and a recording visible.
Screenshot versus screen recording
On Kali Xfce, Ctrl + Print Screen launches the screen recorder; pressing Enter starts recording. Use plain Print Screen for the still image described in the main steps.
Desktop environment scope
The shortcut above is specifically documented for Kali’s Xfce desktop. Kali also documents packages for other desktop environments, including GNOME, so do not assume the Xfce shortcut is universal. If your Kali session uses another desktop, check that environment’s screenshot controls and keyboard settings.
| What you use | Documented action | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Kali Xfce keyboard | Print Screen, then Enter | You have the standard Xfce setup |
| Kali Xfce panel | Screen-Recorder icon, then Screenshot | The key is unavailable or remapped |
| Kali Xfce recording | Ctrl + Print Screen, then Enter | You need video instead of a still image |
| Other desktop environment | Use that desktop’s screenshot controls | Your session is not Xfce |
Troubleshooting
Print Screen does nothing
- Confirm that your session is Xfce; the documented workflow is Xfce-specific.
- Try the quick-launch panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and choose Screenshot.
- Check whether your keyboard layout or a custom shortcut mapping changed the Print Screen action.
- If the keyboard has no Print Screen key, use the panel method or the screenshot controls supplied by your desktop environment.
Ctrl + Print Screen starts something unexpected
That combination is documented for starting a recording. Release Ctrl and press plain Print Screen when you want a still screenshot.
The panel icon is missing
The icon described by Kali is part of the Xfce quick-launch panel. A customized panel or another desktop environment may not show it. Check your desktop’s screenshot tool or restore the standard Xfce panel configuration.
Pressing Enter does not capture
Make sure the screenshooter window has focus after pressing Print Screen. If another window has focus, click the screenshot tool and press Enter again.
You expected the same shortcut on every Kali installation
Kali documents multiple desktop environment packages. Verify which desktop session is running before diagnosing the shortcut; controls can differ between Xfce and GNOME installations.
Automate captures with ScreenshotNeo
For a one-off desktop screenshot, Kali’s local controls are enough. For scheduled captures, CI jobs, documentation pipelines, or screenshots of a remote URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the API documented at ScreenshotNeo’s developer docs:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- For local Kali captures, the result depends on your desktop session, keyboard mapping, and panel configuration.
- For automated URL captures, set an explicit request timeout in your client, as shown in the Python example.
- ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures, lazy-image loading, CSS element capture, custom waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone and geolocation settings, caching with a chosen TTL, async jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and PDF output.
- Only clean ScreenshotNeo shots are billed. Check the
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedresponse headers when accounting for usage.
