How to screenshot on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Capture the whole screen, a window or a region
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangular snip, Freeform snip, Window snip or Full-screen snip from the overlay.
- For a region, drag over the area. For a window, select the window. Full-screen capture happens immediately.
- Click the notification to open the result in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save or share it.
Microsoft documents Snipping Tool for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its purpose is to capture all or part of the PC screen, and the overlay supports several capture shapes. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide has the current steps.
Use Print Screen
Press Print Screen (sometimes labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) to copy a static image of the entire screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Some laptop keyboards require Fn + Print Screen.
Where Windows screenshots go
A Windows + Shift + S snip is available through the Snipping Tool notification and is not automatically stored in a permanent folder until you save it. Choose the save button in Snipping Tool, then select a folder and file name.
How to screenshot on a Mac
Capture the screen or a selected area
- Press Shift + Command + 3 to capture the entire screen.
- Press Shift + Command + 4, then drag across an area to capture only that region.
- After pressing Shift + Command + 4, press Space to capture a specific window, then click the window.
- Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. It provides controls for full-screen, window, selected-area captures and screen recording.
macOS saves screenshots to the Desktop by default. In the Screenshot app, choose Options to change the destination. Apple describes these shortcuts in its Take a screenshot on Mac guide.
Copy a Mac screenshot instead of saving it
Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut to copy the image to the clipboard. You can also Control-click the thumbnail that appears after capture and choose Save to Clipboard. Paste with Command + V.
Some protected apps, including Apple TV, can prevent screenshots of their windows. The Screenshot app is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later.
How to screenshot on a Chromebook
- Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your keyboard has one.
- If it does not, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle followed by two vertical lines.
- On the bottom toolbar, select full-screen, window or partial screenshot.
- Click or drag to capture the chosen scope.
Chromebook saves screenshots to Downloads by default. Open the Files app to find them. You can change the destination in Settings > Screen Capture. For an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot instructions.
How to screenshot on Linux with GNOME
Linux shortcuts vary by distribution and desktop environment. The following applies to GNOME:
- Print opens the screenshot interface, where you choose a screen, window or selection.
- Alt + Print captures the focused window.
- Shift + Print captures the whole screen.
GNOME saves images under Pictures/Screenshots and copies them to the clipboard. Other Linux desktops may use different tools and shortcuts, so check your desktop environment’s settings. GNOME’s references are available in GNOME Help and its keyboard shortcut guide.
Choose the right capture scope
| Need | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everything visible | Full screen | Useful for documenting a complete desktop or error state. |
| One application | Window capture | Excludes other windows and reduces cropping work. |
| One control or error | Region or partial capture | Keeps private tabs, notifications and unrelated content out of the image. |
Before capturing, close sensitive tabs, move the pointer away from the area and wait for menus or notifications to disappear. If you need to show a transient menu, open it first and then use the window or region shortcut.
After you capture: save, paste and share
- Save a file: Use the capture tool’s save command and choose PNG for crisp text, JPEG for smaller photographs, or WebP where your destination supports it.
- Paste directly: Clipboard captures can be pasted into chat, documents, issue trackers and image editors.
- Annotate: Use the built-in pen, highlight, crop and blur tools when available. Blur account numbers, addresses and other private data before sharing.
- Find the file: Check Desktop on macOS, Downloads on Chromebook and the folder you chose in Windows or GNOME.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of websites rather than your laptop’s desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm the operating system and key names. Laptop keyboards may require Fn, and Chromebook external keyboards may need Ctrl + Shift + F5. Use the on-screen tool—Snipping Tool, Screenshot app or Chromebook Screen Capture—if a key is missing.
The screenshot is black or blocked
Some protected video and streaming apps prevent window capture. Try capturing a permitted region, use the app’s export function, or check its privacy settings.
I cannot find the image
Check Desktop on Mac, Downloads on Chromebook, Pictures/Screenshots on GNOME, or the folder selected in Windows Snipping Tool. Search by the capture date if necessary.
The image contains private information
Crop before sharing and blur passwords, addresses, tokens and customer data. A region or window capture usually exposes less information than a full-screen capture.
The image is blurry
Capture at the laptop’s native resolution, avoid enlarging a small crop and use PNG for interface text. If the source is a remote desktop, increase its display resolution before capturing.
Performance, reliability and file-size notes
- Region captures are usually faster to review and share because they contain less content.
- PNG preserves sharp text but can be larger; JPEG is smaller for photos and gradients.
- For repeatable website captures, wait for the page to finish loading before using the shortcut. For automated captures, set an explicit wait condition and use caching where appropriate.
- Keep original files when an image may be used for evidence or debugging; make a resized copy for chat or documentation.
