How to Take a Screenshot on a PC Keyboard

Use Print Screen, Windows + Shift + S, or Windows + Print Screen to capture your PC screen, copy it, or save it automatically.

The fastest way to screenshot on a Windows PC is Windows logo key + Shift + S. Select an area in the Snipping Tool overlay, then copy or save the result. For a full-screen capture copied to the clipboard, press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Scrn). To save a full-screen capture automatically, press Windows logo key + Print Screen.

Choose the shortcut that matches your goal

Goal Keys Result
Select part of the screen Windows + Shift + S Snipping Tool overlay opens; drag a region, window, or full screen.
Copy the entire screen Print Screen Full-screen image goes to the clipboard. Paste with Ctrl + V.
Save the entire screen automatically Windows + Print Screen Saved in Pictures\Screenshots.
Copy the active window Alt + Print Screen Only the focused window goes to the clipboard; paste it with Ctrl + V.

Windows screenshot methods

1. Capture a selected area with Windows + Shift + S

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
  3. Select the area or window.
  4. Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, copy, or save the image.

Press Ctrl + C after a snip to copy it. Press Ctrl + S in Snipping Tool to save it. This is the best default when you need only part of a page or application.

2. Copy the full screen with Print Screen

  1. Press the key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scrn, or Print Screen. It is usually near the upper-right corner of a full-size keyboard.
  2. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable application.
  3. Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
  4. Save it from that application if you need a file.

On some Windows installations, the Print Screen key is configured to open screen snipping instead of copying the whole screen. Change this under Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard if you need the legacy clipboard behavior.

3. Save a full-screen file with Windows + Print Screen

Press Windows + Print Screen. The display may briefly dim. Windows saves the image automatically in Pictures\Screenshots. Open File Explorer and choose Pictures, then Screenshots.

4. Capture only the active window

Click the window you want, press Alt + Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V. This excludes the taskbar and other windows and is useful for documenting one dialog or application.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key

On some laptops and compact keyboards, Print Screen is a secondary function. Try Fn + Print Screen, or look for a key labeled PrtSc in a smaller color or alongside another function.

For Windows hardware without a Print Screen button, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar. Key behavior varies by manufacturer, so use Windows + Shift + S as the reliable fallback.

Where does the screenshot go?

  • Print Screen: clipboard only. Paste it before copying anything else.
  • Alt + Print Screen: active-window image on the clipboard.
  • Windows + Print Screen: Pictures\Screenshots.
  • Windows + Shift + S: the snip is available through the Snipping Tool notification/editor; save it with Ctrl + S.

If you cannot find a file, press Windows + E, select Pictures, and open Screenshots. If you used Print Screen alone, there is no file until you paste and save the clipboard image.

Chromebook and external keyboards

Chromebooks normally use the Show windows key for screenshots. With an external keyboard that does not have that key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5. The capture is saved in the Chromebook’s Downloads folder and is also available from the notification.

What about a Mac?

Windows shortcuts are not universal. macOS uses its own screenshot shortcuts, including separate commands for the full screen, a selected region, and saving or copying to the clipboard. Use Apple’s documented Mac shortcuts rather than assuming Print Screen will work.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Cause Fix
Nothing appears after Print Screen The image is on the clipboard, not saved as a file. Open Paint or another editor and press Ctrl + V, then save.
Print Screen opens Snipping Tool Windows is configured to map the key to screen snipping. Use the overlay, or change the Print Screen setting under Accessibility → Keyboard.
Laptop shortcut does not work The key is a secondary function or requires manufacturer-specific behavior. Try Fn with the screenshot key, or use Windows + Shift + S.
Only one monitor is captured A window or region snip was selected. Use Windows + Print Screen for the full desktop, or choose full-screen snip.
The saved image is in the wrong folder A third-party screenshot utility or cloud backup changed the destination. Check the utility’s save settings and search File Explorer for recent PNG files.
Clipboard paste contains an older image The shortcut did not register or another copy operation replaced the capture. Repeat the shortcut, wait for the snip notification, and paste immediately.
A protected video appears black Some applications prevent screen capture for protected content. Use the application’s export or sharing feature and follow its access rules.

Tips for clearer, smaller screenshots

  • Use a region snip instead of the whole desktop when documenting one control.
  • Close private notifications and unrelated windows before a full-screen capture.
  • PNG preserves text and interface edges; JPEG is smaller for photographs.
  • For high-density displays, check the image dimensions before resizing it for documentation.
  • Save an important capture immediately because clipboard contents are temporary.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots of web pages in a script, CI job, documentation pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Performance, reliability, and cost

Keyboard screenshots are local and immediate, with no service cost. For repeatable web captures, an API avoids maintaining a browser, but page load time still depends on the target site. Use a request timeout long enough for slow pages, cache stable pages when appropriate, and record the returned verdict and billing headers so failed or blocked captures can be handled separately.
