Short answer: use your device’s built-in screenshot control, choose the whole screen, a window, or a selected area, then use the save control or check the platform’s default folder. A screenshot copied to the clipboard is different from a screenshot saved as an image file.

Choose the instructions for your device

Windows: capture a screen, window, or region

Press Windows + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool’s capture overlay. Select a mode, capture the screen, and open the notification or thumbnail that appears. Choose Save as, select a folder, enter a filename, and save the image. Microsoft says automatic saves normally go to the Screenshots folder, although Snipping Tool settings can change automatic-save behavior and the default folder. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Windows capture modes

Mode Use it for
Rectangular snip Drag around a precise rectangular area.
Window snip Capture one application window.
Full-screen snip Capture every display area shown by the tool.
Freeform snip Draw an irregular outline around the content.

Important: the Print Screen key commonly copies the full screen to the clipboard. It may not create a file by itself. Paste the result into Paint, another editor, or a document, then use that application’s save command.

Find and save a Windows screenshot

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Check Pictures > Screenshots (or the folder configured in Snipping Tool).
  3. If it is not there, open the Snipping Tool notification or clipboard history and use Save as.
  4. Use a descriptive filename such as invoice-error-2026-10-01.png.

Mac: save the screenshot to the desktop or another folder

macOS provides separate shortcuts for the entire screen, a selection, and a window or menu. Apple documents these shortcuts in its Mac screenshot guide.

What to capture Shortcut Default result
Entire screen Shift + Command + 3 Saves to the desktop by default.
Selected region Shift + Command + 4, then drag Saves the selected area to the desktop.
Window or menu Shift + Command + 4, then Space, then click Saves the selected window or menu.
Screenshot controls Shift + Command + 5 Opens the Screenshot app.

Press Shift + Command + 5, select Options, and choose a different save location if you do not want screenshots on the desktop. You can also set a timer and control whether the pointer or floating thumbnail appears. On supported Macs using macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot options can include SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF); this format choice is not available on every Mac. Some protected apps, including certain Apple TV windows, can prevent screenshots.

iPhone: capture and find the picture in Photos

The correct buttons depend on the iPhone’s hardware. Apple’s iPhone screenshot guide lists these combinations:

  • Face ID models: press and quickly release the Side button and Volume Up together.
  • Side button with Touch ID: press the Side button and Home button together.
  • Top button with Touch ID: press the Top button and Home button together.

After capture, use the editing and sharing tools, then tap the save or share action you need. In iOS 26, quick tools appear automatically; in iOS 18 and earlier, a thumbnail briefly appears in the lower-left corner. To find an older screenshot, open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.

Chromebook: use Screen Capture and Downloads

Press the dedicated Screenshot key if your Chromebook has one. Otherwise press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5. You can also open Settings and choose Screen Capture. Google’s Chromebook instructions let you choose full-screen, partial, or window capture.

Chromebook screenshots save to Downloads by default. In the screen-capture controls, open settings to choose another folder. If you cannot find the image, open the Files app and check Downloads, then sort by date.

Android: use the power menu or hardware buttons

Open the power-button menu and tap Screenshot. If that option is not present, press Power + Volume Down together. Google’s general Android screenshot guidance says the phone then saves a picture. Android menus and storage locations vary by manufacturer, so check your phone’s Photos or Gallery app and the manufacturer’s support instructions. If neither capture method works, contact the device maker’s support channel.

Clipboard capture versus a saved picture

A keyboard shortcut can produce either a file or clipboard data. Clipboard data exists only until another item replaces it or the device clears it. A saved screenshot has a filename and location and can be attached, uploaded, or archived.

Symptom Likely outcome Fix
Nothing appears in a folder The image was copied to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint, Preview, Photos, or another editor and save it.
A thumbnail appears but no file is visible The capture is waiting for an explicit save or was stored in a custom folder. Open the thumbnail, choose Save as, or inspect the tool’s save-location settings.
You captured the wrong area The selection began or ended in the wrong place. Cancel and repeat with the correct rectangular, window, or full-screen mode.

Save, rename, and share the image

  1. Open the screenshot preview or the folder containing it.
  2. Choose Save as or Export when you need a different format or location.
  3. Use PNG for sharp interface text and transparency, JPEG for smaller photographic files, or the format your destination requires.
  4. Rename the file with the page, subject, and date so it is searchable later.
  5. Open the saved file once before attaching it to confirm that the capture is complete.

Capture a website as an image with code

The shortcuts above capture the device display. For a repeatable screenshot of a web page, an automated browser or screenshot API is more suitable. The following local-browser example uses Playwright and saves a full-page PNG.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();

Install it with npm install playwright and run the file with Node.js. For dynamic pages, wait for a selector or a known delay before capturing. A local browser needs Chromium dependencies, network access, and maintenance when sites change.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page or CSS-element capture, device presets, custom viewports, dark mode, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, async jobs, webhooks, bulk capture, usage, and the OpenAPI specification.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting checklist

The shortcut does nothing

Confirm that the keys match your operating system and keyboard layout. On laptops, a function key may require Fn. On Android and iPhone, use the hardware combination for that model.

The screenshot is black or blocked

Some protected apps prevent screenshots. Try capturing an unprotected window or use the service’s documented export option.

The page is incomplete

Scroll through lazy-loaded content before a manual capture. For automation, wait for network idle or a specific selector and use full-page capture.

The file is too large

Capture only the needed region, reduce the display scale, or export as JPEG where lossless text quality is not required. For API captures, use resizing or a lower retina scale.

ScreenshotNeo returns an error

Check the access key, URL encoding, and destination URL. Increase the client timeout for slow pages, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, and retry transient load failures. A bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit is not billed.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Manual shortcuts are fastest for one-off evidence because they require no setup.
  • Automated browser capture is repeatable but consumes local CPU, memory, browser downloads, and maintenance time.
  • For API work, use caching with a TTL when the page does not change often, and use async jobs with signed webhooks for long or bulk captures.
  • Capture only the required element or viewport when a full-page image is unnecessary.
  • ScreenshotNeo supports up to 100 URLs per bulk call. Clean shots are billed; failed and invalid outcomes listed in its response verdicts are not.

FAQ

Where did my screenshot go?

Check the platform default: Windows Screenshots, Mac desktop, Chromebook Downloads, or the iPhone Photos Screenshots collection. Android storage depends on the manufacturer.

Can I screenshot only part of the screen?

Yes. Use rectangular or freeform snip on Windows, Shift-Command-4 on Mac, and partial capture in Chromebook Screen Capture. Mobile interfaces vary by model.

Does Print Screen save a file?

Often it copies the screen to the clipboard. Paste it into an editor and save the resulting image.

What format should I use?

PNG is a strong default for text and interfaces. JPEG is smaller for photographs. Use the format required by the app or upload destination.

Do I need a paid app for a normal screenshot?

No. Windows, macOS, iPhone, Chromebook, and Android include built-in capture tools. An API such as ScreenshotNeo is useful when you need repeatable website captures, cleanup, automation, or agent access.
