How to Test Internet Explorer on a Mac

Internet Explorer is not available as a native macOS browser. Choose hosted Windows testing, a local Windows environment, or Edge IE mode based on what you need to verify.

Short answer: You cannot install a current native version of Internet Explorer on macOS. To test a page in actual IE, connect from your Mac to a hosted Windows browser session that provides IE, or run a suitable Windows environment locally. If you are checking compatibility for a legacy site or app, Microsoft’s supported path is Microsoft Edge with IE mode on Windows. An extension that imitates IE is only an approximation, not proof of actual IE behavior.

First decide what you need to validate: the actual Internet Explorer browser, the compatibility behavior of Edge IE mode, or simply a screenshot of how a page looks in a modern browser. Those are different tests.

1. Choose the right testing route

Route What it tests Best for Trade-offs
Hosted Windows/IE browser session A remote Windows environment with a selectable IE version, if the provider currently offers it Quick manual checks, access to multiple Windows and IE combinations, or a team without a Windows test machine Depends on the provider’s current browser matrix and account terms. Verify the session is the actual browser/version you need. BrowserStack describes its IE sessions as real browsers in real environments; this is the vendor’s description, so check its current offering.
Local Windows environment or VM The Windows setup you administer, including IE where available and appropriate Repeated testing, local tooling, or sites reachable only from that environment You must configure and maintain Windows and virtualization. Setup depends on the Mac model and virtualization compatibility; there is no universal current VM recipe.
Edge IE mode on Windows Microsoft Edge’s IE compatibility mode, not a Mac installation of Internet Explorer Organizations supporting legacy sites and applications Windows, Edge version, and device policies affect setup. It is a compatibility route, not the standalone IE application.
IE-emulation extension An approximation of IE-like rendering or behavior An early, informal visual check when exact fidelity is not required Do not use it as final evidence. BrowserStack cautions that IE Tab does not use the actual Internet Explorer browser.

Compare routes on four questions: does it run actual IE or IE mode; how much setup and upkeep does it need; can it reach the site under test, including a local development server; and will you test manually or automate it?

2. Use a hosted Windows/IE session from your Mac

  1. Choose a browser-testing provider and check its current browser and operating-system matrix for the exact IE version or mode you need.
  2. Open a remote interactive session from your Mac and select the Windows and browser combination.
  3. Navigate to the public test URL. For an internal or local site, follow the provider’s documented secure tunnel or network-access procedure if available.
  4. Record the selected browser and operating-system versions with your findings. Do not label an IE mode result as a test in the standalone IE application.
  5. Repeat key flows at the viewport sizes and with the data conditions that matter to your users.

Hosted sessions are usually the shortest path for a one-off interactive check. Their browser availability and access terms can change, so confirm both before planning a test campaign.

3. Run a local Windows environment

A local Windows setup gives you more control over tools and network access, but requires a compatible Windows installation and virtualization configuration. The available setup varies with the Mac model and the virtualization software. Confirm that your specific environment can run the Windows and browser version you need before investing time in test automation.

  1. Choose a Windows environment compatible with your Mac and your organization’s licensing and security requirements.
  2. Install or configure the browser environment required by the test. IE11 desktop support ended on June 15, 2022, for certain Windows 10 versions; do not assume a fresh Windows setup can install the old application.
  3. For legacy compatibility, configure Edge IE mode if that is the behavior your organization intends to support.
  4. Make the target application reachable from the Windows environment. Check DNS, VPN, firewall, and development-server binding if the page is local or internal.
  5. Keep a reproducible note of Windows, Edge, policy, and site-list settings so later results can be compared.

4. Enable IE mode in Edge on Windows

Microsoft’s current general setup is performed in Edge on Windows:

  1. In Edge, open edge://settings/defaultBrowser.
  2. Under Internet Explorer compatibility, allow sites to be reloaded in IE mode, then restart Edge if prompted.
  3. Visit the site. Open Settings and more (…) > Reload in Internet Explorer mode.
  4. For Edge version 141 or later on a non-enterprise device, Microsoft also documents adding a specific site under Settings > Default Browser > Add a page in Internet Explorer mode pages, then reloading it.

On managed devices, an administrator may control the setting or site list, and the menu wording can vary with Edge version. Microsoft’s local site list documentation says a user-added site stays on the list for a default 30 days and the list does not sync across devices. If the page later stops opening in IE mode, check the list and policy before assuming the site changed.

Microsoft ended support for the IE11 desktop application on June 15, 2022, for certain Windows 10 versions. Microsoft states that IE mode in Edge will be supported through at least 2029 and that it will provide at least one year’s notice before retirement. These are lifecycle statements, not a guarantee that every Windows edition or configuration has the same availability.

5. Automate IE mode tests

For the automation setup described by Microsoft, use Microsoft Edge, Selenium 4 or later language bindings, and Internet Explorer Driver version 4.0.0.0 or later. This tests IE mode behavior in Edge; it does not install Internet Explorer on macOS.

Follow Microsoft’s current IE mode automation guide for the driver and capability configuration matching your language and Edge version. Do not copy a generic legacy IE WebDriver setup and assume it controls an IE mode tab.

  • Verify the browser mode. Check the IE mode indicator and your automation configuration before trusting a pass or failure.
  • Do not launch with remote debugging when you need IE mode. Microsoft’s DevTools documentation warns that a command-line remote-debugging argument disables IE mode for that Edge session; the page can instead render in Chromium.
  • Debug IE mode tabs with IEChooser. Microsoft’s DevTools guidance documents IEChooser for inspecting IE mode content.
  • Account for IE-specific components. Features such as ActiveX may not render correctly if the page is actually running in Chromium.

See Microsoft’s primary documentation for IE mode setup, IE mode automation, and IE mode debugging.

6. Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
You cannot find an Internet Explorer app on the Mac IE is not a native macOS browser Use a hosted Windows/IE session or a local Windows environment. Use Edge IE mode on Windows if compatibility with legacy sites is the goal.
The IE mode setting or reload menu is missing Edge version, Windows configuration, or organization policy controls availability Check edge://settings/defaultBrowser, confirm the Edge version, and ask the device administrator whether policy manages IE mode.
A site used to open in IE mode but now opens normally The local site-list entry may have expired or the list differs on this device Re-add the site if allowed, check enterprise site-list policy, and remember that local entries have a default 30-day duration and do not sync.
An automated test passes in Chromium but fails in IE mode, or vice versa The test may be in the wrong mode; remote-debugging launch arguments disable IE mode Remove the remote-debugging argument for the IE mode run, inspect the mode indicator, and validate the selected tab with Microsoft’s IE mode debugging workflow.
ActiveX or another IE-specific feature is missing The page may be running in Chromium rather than IE mode, or the environment does not support the component Confirm the mode and test in the intended Windows environment. Do not infer IE compatibility from an emulation extension.
The hosted browser cannot load a development URL The remote session cannot reach a loopback address, private network, VPN, or local DNS name on your Mac Use the provider’s documented tunnel or expose a controlled test endpoint that the session can reach. A remote browser’s localhost is the remote machine, not your Mac.

7. Capture a page for visual review

A screenshot can help document what a page looks like, but it cannot establish that the screenshot came from IE or IE mode. Use a real browser session for compatibility claims; use a screenshot service when you need an image or PDF of a reachable page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request; it does not provide an Internet Explorer browser session, so it is useful for capturing a page, not proving IE compatibility. Before capture it can accept consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing. Responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. See the ScreenshotNeo site and API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with a publicly reachable target. These calls capture a page; they do not change the browser engine to IE. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
