Why Is Text Cut Off in a Saved Webpage PDF?

Text can be clipped when a webpage’s print layout exceeds the PDF page area. Use print preview to check scale, margins, orientation, and where the clipping starts.

Text is usually cut off in a saved webpage PDF because the page’s print layout does not fit the printable area, or because the print settings use unsuitable margins, scale, orientation, or paper size. Start with print preview: it shows whether the clipping is already present before you save. The exact cause depends on the browser, device, webpage, and print destination.

1. Find where the clipping starts

Compare three views: the webpage, the browser’s print preview, and the saved PDF. Note whether the missing content is at the left or right edge, at the top or bottom, or spread across the page.

  • The webpage looks right, but print preview is clipped: inspect print layout settings and the page’s print-specific styling.
  • Print preview looks right, but the saved PDF appears clipped: reopen the file and check it at normal zoom. A viewer’s zoom or fit mode can make page edges appear missing. If the file itself is clipped, compare it with preview again and record the browser and save destination.
  • The webpage itself is clipped: printing may preserve the same problem. Check the page at a different viewport or contact the site owner if the content is unavailable on screen too.

This comparison narrows down which step to investigate; it does not identify a root cause by itself.

2. Adjust the print layout

  1. Open the page’s print preview.
  2. Try the other orientation. Landscape may give a wide table or layout more room; portrait may suit a narrow page.
  3. Check the paper size. A mismatch between the intended page size and the selected size can change the available page area.
  4. Reduce margins if the controls allow it. Keep enough room for content that should not sit at the page edge.
  5. Try a fit-to-printable-area or similar scale option. If the content is too small or the layout changes unexpectedly, compare with actual size or a custom scale.
  6. After each change, inspect the preview and check every page, especially page breaks, tables, and content near the edges.
  7. Save as PDF only after the preview shows the content you need.

Control names and available choices vary by browser, platform, and print destination. Microsoft Edge documents orientation, margins, and “Scale to print” choices that include fit-to-printable-area, actual-size, and custom scaling. These are useful settings to inspect, not proof that scaling caused a particular clipping issue. Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions

3. Save a webpage as PDF in Chrome

Chrome’s documented workflow is to open the page, invoke Print, adjust the available print settings, and choose Save as PDF. Check the preview before saving, then open the resulting file to confirm the edges and page breaks. Google Chrome Help: Print from Chrome

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and use the browser’s Print command.
  2. Review the preview and available layout settings.
  3. Choose Save as PDF as the destination.
  4. Save, open the PDF, and inspect the pages at normal zoom.

Chrome’s help confirms this workflow; it does not prescribe one universal setting that fixes every clipped page.

4. Try a simpler or partial print

If the page has sidebars, sticky elements, or other content that makes the print layout difficult to read, try a simplified reading view if your browser offers one for that site. Edge documents Immersive Reader as a clutter-free printing option on supported websites; it is not available everywhere. Edge also documents printing selected webpage content and opening the system print dialog as alternatives to try. These paths can help isolate a layout problem, but none is guaranteed to fix every page. Microsoft’s Edge printing instructions

5. Troubleshoot persistent clipping

Symptom What to check Next step
Text is clipped at the left or right edge Orientation, margins, paper size, and scale in preview Try a fit option or landscape for wide content, then review preview again.
Top or bottom content is missing Preview page boundaries and page breaks Check all pages and the selected paper size. Try printing a selection if only one section is needed.
Preview is good, but the PDF looks clipped PDF viewer zoom, page-fit mode, and the actual page edges Reopen the file and inspect it at normal zoom; compare with the preview.
Only one website prints badly Whether the site offers a simplified reading view; whether other pages print normally Try a supported reader view or selected-content printing. The page may use print-specific styling.
Settings do not match the instructions Browser, operating system, and print destination Look for equivalent layout controls or try the system print dialog where available.
The same issue persists after changing settings Whether the page, preview, and saved file differ; browser version and page dimensions Record the page URL, browser and version, operating system, destination, paper size, and which edges are clipped before seeking site-specific support.

A browser’s PDF viewer can manage and annotate PDFs, but those features do not establish that you need a paid editor to correct a webpage’s print layout. Google Chrome Help: Manage PDFs in Chrome

6. Capture a webpage PDF with a screenshot API

If you need a repeatable PDF capture in an application or script, a screenshot API can avoid configuring a local browser print dialog. It will not automatically repair a webpage whose own print layout is broken; inspect the output and choose the relevant capture settings.

ScreenshotNeo: one request for a webpage PDF

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API supports PDF capture, and its parameters include paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. For API options and details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com \
  -d format=pdf \
  -o webpage.pdf

Use your API key and replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. The query parameters for PDF settings are documented in the API reference.

Or skip the browser setup

For a quick image capture, one GET request returns a screenshot; use PDF format when you need a document. The call below saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed, and response headers say the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

7. Keep captures reliable and control cost

  • Check the output: verify page edges and page breaks in the resulting PDF, especially when the source page changes.
  • Use capture controls deliberately: for PDFs, set the intended paper size, margins, orientation, and page range. ScreenshotNeo also supports waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle when a page needs time to render.
  • Account for dynamic content: pages may load content after the initial HTML. A suitable wait can help, though the page’s own layout still determines what fits in the PDF.
  • Understand billing: ScreenshotNeo’s stated billing rules mean cache hits and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads cost nothing. Choose caching and its TTL if repeated captures of the same page are appropriate.
  • Choose volume based on need: the listed plans are Free (1,000 shots/month), Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000). Yearly billing gives two months free; every feature is on every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a browser switch always fix cut-off text?

No universal fix is established. Browser controls vary, and the cause may be specific to the page, device, settings, or destination. Compare the page, preview, and saved PDF before changing tools.

Should I use actual size or fit to page?

Try the fit option when content exceeds the printable area. Compare actual size if fitting makes text too small or changes the layout. Judge from preview and inspect the saved file.

Can a PDF viewer restore text that was cropped during printing?

A viewer can display and manage a PDF, but if the content was omitted when the PDF was created, first revisit the browser’s print preview and settings.

What information helps diagnose a case that remains broken?

Share the page URL, browser and version, operating system, print destination, paper size, and whether clipping appears in the webpage, preview, or saved file. Describe the affected edges or sections.
