How to Turn Off Dark Mode on Google Search

Switch Google Search back to a light background on desktop or mobile, stop it following your device theme, and fix Chrome settings that stay dark.

To turn off dark mode on Google Search: open Google Search, choose Settings → See all settings → Appearance, select Light theme, and click Save. On a phone or tablet browser, search on Google, tap More → Settings, then choose Light theme under Appearance.

Google Search has its own theme setting. Changing Chrome or your device to light mode may not change Search, and choosing Device default can make Search turn dark again when your operating system switches themes.

Turn off dark mode on Google Search on a computer

  1. Open Google.com and run a search.
  2. At the top-left of the results page, select Settings.
  3. Choose See all settings.
  4. Open the Appearance section.
  5. Select Light theme.
  6. Select Save.

The setting applies to Google Search pages, including the Google homepage, results pages, and Search settings. Google says a signed-in user’s choice is saved on each desktop, and Search settings can carry across desktop browsers when the user is signed in. See Google’s Search theme instructions for the current menu labels.

Turn off dark mode on a phone or tablet

  1. Open a mobile browser and go to google.com.
  2. Run a search.
  3. Tap More at the top-left.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Under Appearance, choose Light theme.
  6. Save the setting if Google displays a Save button, then return to the results page.

Google also documents a faster control on some mobile Search pages: open More and tap Dark theme: Off. The exact shortcut can vary by browser layout and account state. Google’s definitions are:

Option What it does When to choose it
Light theme Uses dark text on a light background. You always want Google Search to stay light.
Dark theme Uses light text on a dark background. You want Search to stay dark.
Device default Matches your device’s color scheme. You want Search to follow automatic system changes.

On mobile devices and tablets, Google says the preference is saved when you are signed in. See the official mobile and desktop guidance if your menu uses slightly different wording.

Why Google Search is still dark after Chrome is light

Chrome’s appearance and Google Search’s appearance are separate settings. Chrome controls surfaces such as the new-tab page, toolbar, settings pages, and other browser UI. Google Search controls the Google homepage, results, and Search settings.

If Search is light but Chrome itself is still dark:

  1. Open Chrome’s menu (⋮).
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Appearance.
  4. Set the browser theme or color mode to Light instead of Dark or Device.

Chrome’s own controls are described in Chrome Help. If only Google results are black, change the Google Search Appearance setting first.

Stop Google Search from following your device theme

If Search becomes dark every evening or whenever your operating system changes, it is probably set to Device default. Repeat the desktop or mobile steps and select Light theme explicitly. Do not leave it on Device default.

This narrow Search preference is usually preferable to changing the entire device when you only want Google Search to be light. Your operating system, other websites, and other apps can keep their existing theme choices.

Make the setting persist across browsers and devices

  • Sign in to the intended Google Account. A different account can have a different Search preference.
  • Choose Light theme, not Device default. Device default can change with the operating system.
  • Save the setting. On desktop, use the Save button when it appears.
  • Allow cookies. Google needs browser storage or account state to remember a preference.
  • Check each device. Google describes desktop choices as saved on each signed-in desktop; mobile settings are saved on signed-in mobile devices and tablets.

Troubleshooting

The Appearance option is missing

Run a search first, then open the Settings or More menu from the results page. Google can show different controls on the homepage, results page, mobile browser, and desktop browser. If necessary, open Search settings directly from the Settings menu.

Light theme changes back to dark

Check that you selected Light theme rather than Device default. Then confirm that you are signed in to the account you intend to use, cookies are enabled, and the browser is not deleting site data when it closes.

Only Chrome’s toolbar or new-tab page is dark

That is Chrome’s browser appearance, not Google Search. Set Chrome’s Appearance to Light in Chrome Settings.

Google Search is light, but another Google page is dark

The Search preference covers Google Search pages. Other Google products and pages can have their own theme controls. Change that product’s setting separately.

Private browsing does not remember the choice

Incognito or private windows commonly discard cookies and local settings when closed. Set the preference in a normal signed-in window and test there.

The page looks partly dark after switching

Reload the results page. Also check browser extensions that force dark mode, accessibility tools, custom stylesheets, or operating-system contrast settings. Temporarily disable those extensions to identify whether they are overriding Google’s theme.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a light Google Search page for documentation, QA, or an automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can make the screenshot with one request. Set Google Search to Light theme in the URL or capture a page after the preference is saved. The API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This is a complete WebP request with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+turn+off+dark+mode \
  -o google-search.webp

Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={
        "access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY",
        "url": "https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+turn+off+dark+mode",
    },
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("google-search.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+turn+off+dark+mode'
});

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('google-search.webp', buffer));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ

Does turning off Google Search dark mode change my whole phone?

No. It changes Google Search’s own pages. Your phone’s system theme and other apps keep their existing settings.

Should I choose Light theme or Device default?

Choose Light theme if you want Search to remain white. Choose Device default only if Search should follow your operating system automatically.

Why does Google Search use dark mode by default?

Google says Search pages match the device color scheme by default. If your device is dark, Device default can make Search dark.

Do I need to change both Google and Chrome?

Only if both are dark. Google Search and Chrome appearance settings control different parts of the experience.

Will the setting follow me to a new computer?

Google says signed-in Search settings can carry across desktop browsers, while the desktop choice is saved on each signed-in desktop. Check the setting after signing in on a new device.
