How to Turn a Screenshot Into Text
Copy words from a screenshot on iPhone, Android, Windows, or a PDF with built-in OCR, then fix common recognition errors.
A screenshot is an image, so you cannot copy its words until an OCR (optical character recognition) feature recognizes them. Use the built-in tool for your device: Live Text in Photos on iPhone or iPad, Google Lens on Android, or Text Actions in Windows Snipping Tool. Select the recognized text, copy it, and compare the result with the original image before relying on names, numbers, URLs, or code.
Choose the right method
| Situation | Best first choice | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Saved screenshot on iPhone or iPad | Photos + Live Text | Copied text, translation, or lookup |
| Saved screenshot on Android | Google Lens | Copied or translated text |
| Current screen or image on Windows | Snipping Tool Text Actions | Copied text |
| Many image pages or an image PDF | Adobe Acrobat Scan & OCR | Searchable or editable PDF |
Device model, operating-system version, language, and region affect availability. There is no source-backed accuracy ranking for current consumer OCR tools, so choose the workflow that matches where the image already is.
iPhone and iPad: copy text with Live Text
Apple Live Text recognizes text in photos, videos, and images found online. It requires an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 15 or later. Video recognition requires iOS 16 or later, and availability varies by language and region.
- Open the screenshot in the Photos app.
- If the text-detection control is not already highlighted, tap it.
- Touch and hold a word. Drag the selection handles to include the passage you need.
- Tap Copy, then paste into Notes, Mail, a document, or your code editor.
If selection handles do not appear, zoom in, crop to the text, or confirm that the device and language support Live Text. For a translation, select the text and choose Translate when the option is offered.
Android: copy text with Google Lens
Google documents opening an uploaded screenshot in Lens, selecting text or a region, and choosing Copy. The entry point varies by device; it is commonly Google Photos or the Google app.
- Open the screenshot in Google Photos, or open Lens from the Google app.
- Choose the Lens action that detects text.
- Select a word, paragraph, or smaller region.
- Tap Copy and paste the result where you need it.
Select a smaller area when Lens returns unrelated content or misses the target passage. Google also documents screenshot translation through Photos > screenshot > Lens > Translate. Pixel Camera help lists Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish for that screenshot-translation feature; treat that as a feature-specific list rather than a limit on every Lens recognition workflow.
Windows: use Snipping Tool Text Actions
Microsoft documents OCR through the Snipping Tool’s Text Actions feature. Use it with a saved screenshot or a new screen capture.
- Open Snipping Tool and load the screenshot, or take a new snip.
- Choose Text Actions.
- Let the tool identify text, then select the required words.
- Copy and paste the result into the destination application.
Button names and availability vary by Windows and Snipping Tool version. Microsoft recommends Snipping Tool for screenshot OCR; PowerToys Text Extractor remains useful for extracting text from other applications or media. If Text Actions is missing, update Windows and Snipping Tool, or use PowerToys for a live screen selection.
PDFs and batches of screenshots
For one short passage, built-in OCR is usually faster. When screenshots are embedded in a PDF or you have many document images, Adobe Acrobat’s Scan & OCR workflow can recognize text and make the PDF searchable and editable. Adobe documents batch OCR through Action Wizard on certain desktop plans. Adobe Scan is a separate free mobile app for creating scans.
- Open the image PDF in Acrobat.
- Run Scan & OCR and choose the page range and recognition language.
- Save the searchable PDF, or export the recognized text to an editable format.
- Review pages with tables, columns, handwriting, or low contrast.
Acrobat is an optional document workflow, not a prerequisite for copying text from a single screenshot.
Improve OCR results before you copy
- Crop tightly: isolate the paragraph or field you need. A smaller region reduces competing UI text.
- Use the clearest source: avoid a compressed preview or a screenshot that was resized several times.
- Increase readable size: zoom or create a larger crop before recognition.
- Preserve contrast: text against a simple, high-contrast background is easier to recognize.
- Choose the correct language: recognition and translation depend on supported languages.
- Keep the original open: compare every important value with the pixels in the screenshot.
OCR can change a zero to the letter O, drop punctuation, merge columns, or insert line breaks. A 2018 experimental paper reported 74% character-level accuracy for one OpenCV plus LSTM-based Tesseract pipeline on its own dataset. That result does not describe current phone OCR or establish a universal error rate.
Check the copied text
Always verify:
- Names, email addresses, domains, and URLs
- Numbers, dates, prices, account IDs, and version numbers
- Hyphens, underscores, quotation marks, and decimal points
- Code indentation, braces, operators, and escaped characters
- Line order in columns, tables, and chat screenshots
For code, paste into a plain-text editor first, then compare line by line. For a URL, inspect the address manually before opening it.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No text control appears on iPhone or iPad | Unsupported device, iOS version, language, or region | Check Live Text requirements, update iOS, select a supported language, or use another device workflow. |
| Android Lens selects the wrong area | Selection includes icons, controls, or multiple columns | Crop the screenshot and select a smaller region. |
| Windows Text Actions is unavailable | Older Snipping Tool or Windows build | Update the app and Windows; use PowerToys Text Extractor for a screen selection. |
| Words are missing | Small text, blur, compression, or low contrast | Use the original image, crop tightly, enlarge it, and retry. |
| Columns appear in the wrong order | OCR read the page spatially instead of by column | Recognize each column separately and reassemble it manually. |
| Handwriting is unusable | Handwriting recognition is more limited than printed text | Use a clearer crop and confirm language support; expect manual correction. |
| Translation changes meaning | OCR and translation errors compound | Copy the source text first, verify it, then translate the corrected text. |
Performance, privacy, and reliability
Built-in tools avoid uploading a screenshot to a separate OCR website, which is useful for private messages, credentials, and internal documents. Processing time depends on image size, device, and application; the official guidance does not provide a comparable speed ranking. For repeated work, standardize screenshot dimensions, crop rules, language settings, and a review step.
Keep the original image with the extracted text when the content matters. OCR output is a transcription aid, not proof that every character was recognized correctly.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a new, clean screenshot of a web page before extracting its text, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The request can wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, use a device preset or custom viewport, load lazy images, capture one CSS-selected element, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, and set headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, or geolocation. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option list.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools so AI agents can capture pages. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Can I copy text from a screenshot without installing an OCR app?
Usually yes. Live Text, Google Lens, and Windows Snipping Tool include OCR in the platform workflows described above.
Why does copied text contain strange line breaks?
OCR reconstructs layout from pixels. Columns, narrow text boxes, and responsive web layouts can produce unexpected breaks. Copy smaller regions or edit the result manually.
Can OCR read text inside a video frame?
Apple documents Live Text recognition in video on iOS 16 or later. Pause the video, capture the frame, and select the recognized text.
Should I use Acrobat for every screenshot?
No. Acrobat is most useful for searchable or editable PDFs and batches of document images. Built-in phone or Windows tools are simpler for one screenshot.
