How to Use the Print Screen Shortcut Key

Learn what Print Screen does on Windows, where screenshots go, how to capture a region, and what to try if your keyboard has no PrtScn key.

On Windows, press Windows+Print Screen to capture the full screen and save it as a file in Pictures\Screenshots. To select part of the screen, press Windows+Shift+S. A press of the Print Screen key by itself may copy the screen to the clipboard or open screen snipping, depending on your settings and keyboard.

The key may be labeled Print Screen, PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. The instructions below are for Windows; Mac uses different shortcuts.

1. Choose the screenshot shortcut for what you need

What you need Windows shortcut Where the capture goes
Full screen saved as an image Windows+Print Screen Pictures\Screenshots
Select a region or capture a window Windows+Shift+S Screen snipping workflow; use its notification or Snipping Tool to edit and save
Copy the screen for pasting Print Screen, if configured for clipboard capture Clipboard; paste into a document, message, or image editor
Use the Snipping Tool directly Open Snipping Tool from Start Capture, annotate, save, or share in the tool

2. Save the whole screen with Print Screen

  1. Show the screen you want to capture.
  2. Press Windows+Print Screen together. On some keyboards you may need to hold Fn as well; key behavior varies by device.
  3. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures\Screenshots. The capture should be saved there.

If you have multiple displays, this shortcut captures the screen or screens according to Windows’ screenshot behavior. To capture only a particular area, use the snipping shortcut instead.

3. Select an area, window, or screen with screen snipping

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose a capture mode in the screen snipping controls, then select the area or window you want.
  3. Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool. From there you can annotate, save, or share it.

This is the direct option when you need a crop rather than an entire desktop. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance covers capturing, annotating, saving, and sharing screenshots: Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

4. Copy a screenshot to the clipboard

When Print Screen is configured to copy a capture, press the key and then paste with Ctrl+V into the destination app. For example, paste into an email, document, chat, or image editor. Clipboard captures are not automatically the same as a saved image file; save the pasted image from the app if you need a file.

If pressing Print Screen opens an overlay instead, Windows may be configured to use that key to open screen snipping. You can still use Windows+Shift+S for a region capture, or change the Print Screen behavior in Windows keyboard accessibility settings.

5. If your keyboard has no Print Screen key

Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative on devices without a PrtScn button. Laptop and compact keyboard layouts differ, so the Fn mapping is not universal. Check your device manufacturer’s keyboard guide if that combination does not work. You can also open Snipping Tool from Start and capture there.

6. Mac uses different screenshot shortcuts

Do not use the Windows key combinations on a Mac. Apple documents Shift+Command+3 for a full-screen screenshot and Shift+Command+4 to select an area. Screenshot controls also provide clipboard options. Some apps, including Apple TV, may restrict screenshots of their windows. See Apple’s guide: Take a screenshot on Mac.

7. Troubleshooting Print Screen

Problem Likely cause What to do
Print Screen opens a selection overlay The key is set to open screen snipping. Use the overlay, or review the Windows setting named “Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping” in keyboard accessibility settings.
No image appears in Pictures\Screenshots You may have used clipboard capture or region snipping instead of Windows+Print Screen. Check the clipboard by pasting into an app, or use the screen snipping notification to open and save the capture.
Nothing happens when you press the key The key may require Fn, have a different label, or follow a device-specific mapping. Look for PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn; try the relevant Fn combination from your device guide, or open Snipping Tool.
The capture is not the area I wanted The full-screen shortcut captures the whole screen. Use Windows+Shift+S and select the desired area or window.
A screenshot of an app window is black or unavailable Some apps restrict screen capture of their content. Use the app’s own export or sharing feature where available. Apple specifically notes restrictions for some Mac apps such as Apple TV.

8. Capture a website without managing a browser

Print Screen is convenient for the screen in front of you. For repeatable website captures from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns an image or PDF, and the parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and use your API key. ScreenshotNeo can also capture a selected element, full pages, PDFs, and HTML/CSS; configure waits, viewport, device presets, headers, cookies, and other options in the docs. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
