How to Set Up Versionista Alerts for a Specific Page Section

Filter a page to one section, watch specific phrases, and configure instant email alerts in Versionista. Learn the limits and how to avoid missed changes.

To set up Versionista alerts for one page section, first configure a page-area inclusion or exclusion filter, then enter the words or phrases you want to track under Focus phrases, one per line. Versionista applies area filters before matching phrases. To receive an email as soon as a qualifying change is detected, enable instant alerts in that page’s Crawl settings; they are off by default.

This phrase-monitoring feature is documented for HTML and plain-text pages. Area filters keep matching focused on the relevant part of a page, while focus phrases determine whether Versionista records a new version.

Set up section-specific phrase alerts

  1. In the Versionista dashboard, open the site that contains the page you want to monitor.
  2. Open the page’s filter configuration. Add a page-area inclusion filter for the section, or an exclusion filter for surrounding areas you do not want included. For example, exclude a sidebar if it repeats a phrase that also matters in the main content.
  3. Find Focus phrases. Enter each word or phrase on its own line. Matching is case-insensitive, so you do not need separate capitalization variants.
  4. Save the filter configuration. Versionista records a new version when one of the listed phrases is added or deleted after the area filters are applied. Other changes that do not match the focus list are ignored for version registration.
  5. To receive email immediately, open the monitored page’s view, expand Crawl, and enable instant alerts.
  6. In Account Settings, choose what the email body contains: text changes (the default), text and HTML changes, or filtered changes.

See Versionista’s tutorial on monitoring additions or deletions of specific words and its email alert instructions for the product’s documented controls.

Choose between phrase focus and broader monitoring

Phrase focus is useful when you already know which words or phrases matter. It can reduce notifications about unrelated edits, but it can also miss an important change if the wording changes in an unexpected way.

If future changes are hard to predict, consider monitoring all changes and using area filters to remove irrelevant page regions. Versionista’s tutorial notes that this is often easier than anticipating every relevant phrase. Choose based on how predictable the changes are and how much alert volume you can handle.

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Area filter plus focus phrases You have a known list of terms whose additions or deletions matter. A change that does not add or delete a listed phrase will not trigger a new version.
Monitor changes with area filters You want to catch changes whose wording is not predictable in advance. You may need to review more recorded changes.

Understand what gets recorded and shown

Focus phrases decide whether a new version is recorded; they do not limit the comparison viewer to just the matching phrase. When a phrase qualifies a change and Versionista records a version, the comparison viewer displays all changes for that version. Use the viewer to inspect the full page change and confirm its context.

Area filters are important when the same phrase might appear elsewhere on the page. Since area filtering happens before phrase matching, make sure the target section is included and distracting regions are excluded as intended.

Content and alert limits

  • Supported content: Phrase focus is documented for HTML and plain-text pages.
  • Unsupported selective phrase detection: The documented feature does not selectively detect phrase changes in images, PDFs, Word documents, or other content types.
  • Instant alerts: These are a separate, per-page email setting and are disabled by default.
  • Summary emails: These differ from instant alerts. The tutorial says summaries default to daily, omit themselves when there are no detected changes, and can be scheduled in Account Settings.

Versionista’s current homepage says new monitoring accounts are available through Fluxguard and existing Versionista accounts remain supported. If you do not already have an account, check the current Versionista homepage for its signup path.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check
A phrase elsewhere on the page triggers a version. No area filter excludes or narrows that other region. Add or adjust inclusion/exclusion filters, then confirm the intended text remains in the filtered area.
A visible page change does not create a version. The change did not add or delete a listed focus phrase, or the changed content is outside the filtered area. Check the phrase list and area filter. If you need to detect unanticipated wording changes, monitor all changes within the relevant area.
The phrase appears in a PDF, image, or Word file but is not detected. Phrase focus is documented for HTML and plain text, not those formats. Use a monitoring approach suitable for the file type; do not rely on Versionista’s phrase-focus feature for selective detection there.
A version was recorded, but the comparison shows unrelated edits too. The focus list gates version registration; it does not restrict the comparison display. Review the full comparison to understand the recorded page change.
No immediate email arrives. Instant alerts may still be disabled for that page, or the expected email setting may be different. Open the page view, expand Crawl, enable instant alerts, and check Account Settings for email body options. Summary emails follow a separate schedule.

Reliability and practical checks

  • Verify that the target section is actually within the area selected by your filters.
  • Include phrases that cover the known wording variants that matter. Matching ignores capitalization, but the documented behavior is based on phrase addition or deletion.
  • Use broad monitoring with area exclusions when the changes you care about cannot be listed in advance.
  • After a version is recorded, inspect the full comparison rather than assuming only the focus phrase changed.
  • Do not expect instant email unless you explicitly enable it for the page.

The cited Versionista materials provide no numeric performance or alert-delivery guarantees, so this guide makes no timing or uptime claims.

Or skip the browser setup

If your next step is to capture the page visually for a change review, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API returns an image or PDF. This captures a visual snapshot; it does not replace Versionista’s ongoing change monitoring or phrase alerts.

For setup and options, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://versionista.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://versionista.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://versionista.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. FAQ

Can I get alerted only for changes in one section?

Use a page-area inclusion or exclusion filter to isolate that section, then add focus phrases if only known terms should trigger a recorded version.

Does Versionista ignore uppercase and lowercase differences?

Yes. Focus phrase matching is case-insensitive.

Can I add several phrases?

Yes. Put one word or phrase on each line in Focus phrases.

Does instant alert email contain only the matching text?

No. The focus list determines whether a version is recorded. The comparison viewer shows all changes in that version; email content is configured separately in Account Settings.

Can I create a new Versionista account?

The current homepage directs new monitoring accounts to Fluxguard and says existing Versionista accounts remain supported. Check that homepage for the current signup route.
