How to Set Up Visual Change Alerts in Hexowatch

Set up a Hexowatch visual monitor, choose what to watch, and configure checks and alerts. Learn how to focus on appearance changes and troubleshoot common issues.

To set up visual change alerts in Hexowatch, create a new visual monitor, enter the page URL, preview it, choose whether to watch the full page or a region, set the check frequency and notification preference, then start monitoring. The monitor is for changes in appearance such as layout or imagery. If you care about visible text only, choose a content monitor instead.

Set up a visual monitor

  1. Copy the exact URL of the page you want to monitor, including the relevant path and query parameters.
  2. Open the Hexowatch dashboard and choose New Monitor, then Visual monitoring.
  3. Enter the URL and select Preview. Check that the expected page loads in the preview. If the site redirects, confirm that the destination is the page you intend to monitor.
  4. Choose the capture scope: the whole page, or a specific area if you only want changes in one part to trigger attention.
  5. Choose a check frequency supported by your account and select a notification channel in the setup flow. The available channels depend on what the interface currently offers; consult the dashboard rather than assuming a particular channel is included.
  6. Optionally configure custom start and end dates if offered for the monitor. The walkthrough also describes proxy mode among configurable preferences.
  7. Select Start Monitoring. Review the monitor in your dashboard and confirm that its URL, scope, frequency, and notification preference are correct.

Hexowatch’s visual-monitor page describes the feature as enabling users to “capture and archive screenshots and receive instant notifications when visual changes are detected.” This describes the product’s stated function; it does not establish a guaranteed alert delivery time. See Hexowatch visual monitoring.

Choose the right scope and device size

Whole page or selected area

Use whole-page monitoring when any visible change on the page matters. Use a selected area to focus on a component, such as a price panel, hero image, or status section. A smaller scope can make alerts more relevant when unrelated parts of a page change frequently. Make sure the selected area still contains the content you intend to watch after the page loads.

Check responsive layouts

Hexowatch’s tutorial describes choosing a device size such as mobile, tablet, or desktop and previewing the page at that size. Select the viewport that matches the issue you want to catch. For responsive pages, consider separate monitors for different viewport sizes if the interface and your plan allow them; a desktop capture alone cannot establish that the mobile layout is unchanged. The source does not establish that every device size or setting is available on every plan.

For setup details, see Hexowatch’s visual and technical regression walkthrough.

Pick the monitor type that matches the change

What should trigger attention? Monitor type to consider
Layout, imagery, or another appearance change Visual monitoring
Visible text changes while visual or source changes should be ignored Content monitoring
HTML or source changes HTML/source-code monitoring
A specific term appearing or disappearing Keyword monitoring
Technology, availability, sitemap, RSS, API, or backlink changes The corresponding monitor type, where offered

Hexowatch documents these as distinct monitor types. Choose based on the signal you need; a screenshot comparison is not automatically the best way to detect every text, source, or availability change. See its page-change tracking overview.

Set a practical check frequency

Choose an interval that fits how quickly the page can change and how much monitoring quota you have. The pricing page reviewed for this guide lists maximum check frequencies of 15 minutes for Pro and 5 minutes for Business, along with plan check quotas. These are plan details that can change. Verify the current Hexowatch pricing and the options shown in your account before relying on a particular interval.

A check interval is not a promise that a notification will arrive at that exact time. A change must first be observed by a check, and notification delivery also depends on the configured channel and its delivery behavior. Avoid selecting the fastest interval by default if a slower check is sufficient; it can consume quota more quickly.

Reduce noisy or misleading alerts

  • Preview the exact page: confirm it has loaded fully and shows the same content you expect visitors to see.
  • Monitor only the meaningful region when appropriate: page-wide changes such as rotating promotions may otherwise distract from the component you care about.
  • Choose the relevant viewport: responsive differences can make a desktop monitor miss a mobile-only regression.
  • Use content monitoring for text-only changes: visual monitoring is intended for appearance changes, not as a general replacement for every monitor mode.
  • Check the plan quota: balance the interval and number of monitors against the account’s available checks.
  • Review proxy and date preferences: if available and relevant, configure them deliberately; the research sources do not establish the exact behavior or availability for every account.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The preview shows the wrong page The URL redirects, requires a different path, or does not identify the intended page. Open the URL yourself, copy the final intended page address, enter it again, and preview before starting.
The monitor starts but misses a change The change is outside the selected region, appears only at another viewport, or is not an appearance change. Check the whole page or adjust the region, preview the relevant device size, and select a content or other monitor type if that better matches the change.
Alerts are too frequent or irrelevant The whole page includes volatile areas such as promotions, or the chosen signal is broader than needed. Narrow the monitored region where possible, choose the right monitor type, and review the frequency.
An alert does not arrive when expected The next check may not have run yet, the selected channel may not be configured, or delivery may take additional time. Check the monitor’s status and frequency in the dashboard, then verify the notification settings for the channel you selected. Do not treat the check interval as a delivery-time guarantee.
The desired frequency is unavailable The account’s plan or check quota may limit the available interval. Review the current pricing page and the frequency options in the account before changing the plan or setting expectations.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot as part of your own workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture a URL with one GET request and return an image or PDF. It is not a Hexowatch visual-monitor setup; use it when you want to capture pages from code or an AI agent.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Example using cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And in Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; all features are on every plan.

FAQ

Can I monitor only part of a page?

Yes. The setup walkthrough describes choosing a specific area instead of the whole page. Preview the selection to make sure it covers the component you care about.

Can a visual monitor catch changes on mobile?

The tutorial describes previewing device sizes including mobile, tablet, and desktop. Confirm the device options available in your account and select the viewport relevant to your check.

Does a five-minute check mean I will get an alert within five minutes?

No. It is a check-frequency limit listed for a plan, not a guaranteed notification delivery time. Verify current plan details and channel behavior in the product.

Is Hexowatch visual monitoring the same as taking a one-off screenshot?

No. A visual monitor repeatedly checks a page and can notify you about detected changes; a screenshot API returns a capture in response to a request.
